SOCCER New investors want to keep Tide, Sounders Women in Tacoma area BY DON RUIZ Staff writer New local investors have purchased the Tacoma Tide FC and Seattle Sounders Women soccer clubs. The sale of the teams to Lane Smith and Cliff McElroy has been approved by the United Soccer Leagues. Smith said the club is contractually ob- ligated to remain in Pierce County but is considering new venues after splitting last season between Curtis High School and Stadium High School. intention is to stay in Tacoma Smith said. We need to be able to work collabora- tively with a venue that is more accessible centrally to the fan base.

look- ing to give our fans a much better venue The Tide has been a member of the Pre- mier Development Northwest Division for the past six seasons. Sounders Women was founded in 2003 and pur- chased in 2008 by Tide Mike Jennings, who retains a minority share in the clubs. am excited to have Lane and Cliff make this Jennings said through a press release. is a Tacoma guy. He wants to see soccer flourish in South Sound.

Cliff has a daughter who plays soccer, and he has been a supporter of the Sounders Women. I will be around when the new guys have questions about running the Smith is a Tacoma native who works as a sales executive at Hewlett Packard. He also is a local real estate investor and has been the lease holder of the Tacoma Soc- cer Center for the past six years. an economically diverse environment. Not everybody in the South Sound either has the time to get up (to CenturyLink Field) or the money. This kind of fills the OFFSEASON: older is in the mix, but GM Hanauer not sure better than here BY DON RUIZ Staff writer Sounders early elimination from the MLS playoffs for the third straight season continues a trend that general manager Adrian Hanauer will consider when shap- ing his roster for next season. adding a couple of old- er veterans gives you more of that Hanauer said Wednes- day in a wide-ranging end-of-sea- son interview. maybe during the regular season I think statisti- cally older players are going to be injured a little bit more or be able to play a few less games.

So, is that a good compromise? If we make that tradeoff and get the points during the regular season, then maybe we lose the playoff home-field advantage, which theo- retically should Seattle went 18-7-9 in the MLS regular season and 27-11-10 in all competitions. So, Hanauer said he want to overact to a season ended mostly due to a single result: the 3-0 playoff-opening loss at Salt Lake, which Hanauer calls the worst game of the sea- son. However, the cap on MLS pay- rolls makes it more difficult each year to keep together a young and talented roster such as the Sound- ers. So, this offseason could bring some changes of choice and some of something closer to necessity. will make some Hanauer said.

will do some things proactively. It be the same team. But generally we should be able to keep the team together the core. But on occa- sion, the way the system works, you do have to get rid of a highly compensated player or a young player that has a lot of potential that you can sell and use that mon- ey as allocation On other topics, Hanauer said: He is a new artificial surface will be in- stalled at CenturyLink Field before next season. Although the decision is not final, the Hawks Nest section in the north end could be opened next season, which would increase capacity of the soccer configuration to around 38,500.

One friendly match against a big-name international opponent is planned for next season. Lower- profile friendlies also could be scheduled for the re- serves. Assembling the protected and unprotected lists for the Nov. 23 expansion draft will be painful. Hanauer said the club will weight the possibility of Montreal passing on talented players who are com- ing off of injuries.

He will meet with Keller next week and wants the Northwest icon to have a continuing role with the organization. In overview, Hanauer called the third season but he acknowledged dis- appointment at the abrupt end. a big believer in statistics, and statistically we were the sec- ond-best team in the league this he said. were the best offensive team in the league. We were good defensively, but an area we need to get a little bit bet- ter.

We won another (U.S. Open Cup and) qualified for Champions League quarterfinals which was a very important goal of ours. Came up short in the playoffs. So, not completely satisfied, but my gut tells me there are 15 or 16 other teams that would gladly trade with Don Ruiz, 253-597-8808 don.ruiz@thenewstribune.com Twitter: blog.thenewstribune.com/soccer Sounders will try to keep core intact TED S.
