THE DAWSON HERALD DAWSON NEBRASKA HISTORICAL EDITION Dawson Business Men are Alert Modern and Progressive Dawson is a live business town and boasts a number of modern business houses operated by men who know their lines thoroughly and who believe at all times in treating their customers as they would like to be treated themselves Many of them have been here for years growing and prbspering with the town RUNCIE FILLING STATION The Runcie Filling Station operated by Mr and Mrs James Runcie is the first business house seen by the visitor coming in from the north They carry Conoco products and do minor repairs on tires and tubes The building was erected a few years ago by Leo Hock and is still owned by him DURYEA SON Duryea of the earliest auto mechanics and salesmen in the county and his son Duryea have been here so long they have become part of the town itself For years they have handled Stude-baker cars and are still selling them as well as doing a nice repair business on all makes of cars KINSEY SONS This store operated by Kinsey a son of the late Kinsey carries one of the most complete lines of hardware and furniture to be found in any small town The store has been in operation for many years and their slogan is that customer is always Mr Kinsey is also a licensed enbalmer and funeral director and their services in this respect are called for not only in the community but in much of the territory surrounding Dawson The firm also operates stQres in Shubert and Stella Andrew Georgi is the efficient assistant in the Dawson store Kinsey manages the store at Shubert SMITH SMITH The Smith Smith store is one of the landmarks of the community having been established many years ago when the town was still young There have been a few changes in the ownership but the business has remained in" the Smith and Buser families At present the owners are Mr and Mrs John Smith' and Miss Sibyl Smith Mrs John Rowan a sister of Mrs Smith assists in the store The Smith store carries a complete line of Groceries General Merchandise Shoes Notions etc and sell them at prices that can meet the' stiffest competition Their line ofMeats Fresh Fruits and Vegetables would grace any city store and are kept in the most modern way in their large General Electric refrigerator They do an exceptionally large business advertising their goods and prices in each issue of The Herald and draw trade from -all jit: 'Ihe surrounding country LINCOLN COMPANY The Lincoln Telephone Telegraph Company which- bought out the Dawson-Nemaha Telephone Co a few years ago is located in a neat little building on the east side of the street Mrs Irene Johnson is chief operator-cashier and is assisted by her sister Miss Esther West They give prompt and courteous service to all patrons of the company A KEMIST A Kemist who has been dispensing drugs and kindred lines in Dawson for the past 28 years is located on the corner of Ridge and Sixth streets He has a large and commodious store with a good stock of everything his line He also has a soda fountain that is well patronized during the summer His son Terry Lynn Kemist assists in the store DR LENNEMANN Dawson is fortunate in having such a splendid young physician is Dr Lennemann who canite here a few years ago shortly after graduating from Creighton Medical college and serving his interneship He had practiced for a short time at Tecumseh but seeing the opportunity for a young man in Dawson he came here and is now thoroughly rooted Mrs Lennemann frequently assists him in his work Their office and home are in the residence of the late Riley CAFE Cafe in the Steininger building is the sole eating place in the community There you can get meals lunches or short orders prepared by Mrs Brien also ice cream cold drinks candy eta The Brien family came from Bern three years ago STEININGER Although work in his line is not as brisk as it was 30 years agfc when he came to Dawson Steininger Village keeps hammering away at his trade He is one of the real old time blacksmiths whose pride was in good materials and good workmanship and he sticks to those tradi-tipns No one ever got a poor job from BARBER SHOP Cyrus Hunt who came here several years ago to do the tonsorial work for the community has a neat little shop just south of the Brien Cafe and is assisted during busy periods by Mrs Hunt who learned the business during --war time JOHNSON LUMBER COMPANY Although1 a comparatively newcomer in the community the Johnson Lumber Company managed by Harry Johnson is making itself the town and surrounding country and is building a splendid business Coming to Dawson about two years ago and buying the business of the old lumber yard thfiy have ded -L- Jtacfc and to the lines carried You can be assured when dealing with them of being able to buy to Build Anything" at very reasonable prices JOHN CARLSON Coming to Dawson from the farm south of Salem about a year ago John Carlson has built up a fine trucking business hauling merchandise and stock td and from the various markets He has a fleet of three large new International trucks and prides himself on keeping them in perfect condition ready to go at any hour His equipment alsoincludes a threshing outfit purchased this year The tracks are housed in the former Tiehen garage and are kept busy most of the time CHAS A SMITH One of the best known and most efficient auto mechanics in the county Mr Smith located in Dawson several years ago and has built up a fine business in his line In addition to repair work on all makes of cars he does electric welding battery and electrical work He also has the agency for Zenith radios and has sold hundreds of these in this section His workshop is located in the rear of the Carlson building FRED LIBBEE Fred Libbee is a son "and probably knows as much of the early history of Dawson as any one Coming into town from the farm a few years ago he established himself in the shoe repair business and later added real estate and insurance He is also Justice of the Peace for Grant precinct THOS RYAN One of the busiest corners here is that of Fifth and Ridge streets where Tom Ryan sells feed and buys poultry cream and eggs He has a large following in these lines and pays highest market prices for produce He carries a complete line of the A Cooper Flour and Feeds and does a large business FLOTT fSJyde Flott has the barber shop next to the post office and is kept quite busy looking after the needs of his customers THE DAWSON BANK This bank was established in 1887 and on through the years has continued to give unexcelled banking service to the community Michael Riley one of the pioneers of the community seeing the need of a bank in the growing community was instrumental in organizing it and remained as cashier until his death His son Dan Riley then took over the reins and has been cashier since that time The business of the bank has shown a steady consistent growth and it is in a sound condition The bank is a member of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation with individual deposits up to $5000 insured by the federal government Present officers of the bank are Riley President Dan Riley Cashier and WHeim Asst Cashier COOPER Store Right Place Since serves the community well with a line of general merchandise groceries and meats shoes etc Mr and Mrs Cooper are well known in the community and enjoy a fine business Max Georgi who assists them in the store has been wilh them for over 25 years The store specializes in the HGF line of foods and their slogan it right make it STEIN AUER About five years ago Julius Steln-auer and his brother-in-law Put Jr bought the meal market and grocery business and later Mr Steinauer boughft out his interest The store has been known for years as the Meat Mar Jcet having always specialized in Fresh and Ctired Meats but in addition they carry a fine line of groceries fruits and vegetables Quality has always been the watchword of this store Ambrose Tiehen Jr clerks in the store THE RILEY HARDWARE This business was established in 1898 by Martin Riley and carries a complete line of Hardware Harness anfl kindred lines They also have farm implements of every kind as well as a complete line of repairs They handle the Dempster line of windmills After the death of Mr Riley three years ago his son-in-law Don GifTee who had been connected with the business for several years purchased the stock and continues to operate the store ANDERSON TRIGGS A few years ago when Anderson Triggs retired from the farm he found that time hung too heavily on his hands and so he started a small dairy His business in this line has gradually increased and he now has a nice herd of good dairy cows and makes regular deliveries of milk and cream over the town MICHAEL RILEY Here is another of Dawson's younger business men who is making good Mr Riley bought the Sinclair Station business a year ago and handles their complete line of Gas Oil Greases etc In addition he has cold drinks both bulk and bottle He is assisted by Wayne Ray DAWSON OIL COMPANY The Dawson Oil Company was started by Lfeo Tiehen twelve years ago to supply the community with Gasoline Oils etc He built a bulk station with tanks to carry a large stock of gasoline kerosene distillate etc and these were shipped here in car lots Following the trend of the times Mr Tiehen later purchased a large tank truck and this is now used to bring the products' from the refineries making a round trip each 24 and having a capacity of over 2000 gallons This company also carries on hand a large stock of tires tubes batteries Sind other supplies for motorists and they are equipped with every convenience to service your car in the best manner Delmer Cummins and Jerry Ryan are employees JACK CLARK Jack Clark operates the pool room and his son John Clark buys cream poultry and eggs for the Jef-pe Commission Co in the adjoining room.
