THE DAWSON HERALD DAWSON NEBRASKA HISTORICAL EDITION Lincoln at the National Council of Catholic Women In spite of such varied activities Mrs Riley is a most energetic home maker Her charming hospitality is a delight to her many friends Her home is a center for the young associates of her children and the entertainment offered in the form of picnics drives hikes swimming parties and other delights of youth prove her heart to be as young as her May it be said with all sincerity Mrs Riley is a woman who gets from life all it has to offer regardless of the limitations of environment A Friend let for her special talents She has won recognition more than state-wide by stories and articles published in the leading newspapers of Nebraska and in other periodicals and has appeared before clubs and has been heard over the radio on book reviews In 1924 she went to Philadelphia as a Governor for Nebraska from the National Council of Catholic Alumnae On this occasion she was offered national recognition by office in the organization but refused because of her loyalty to her interests in her home and community In 1926 at the request of Bishop Beckman she represented the Diocese of younger people of the community builder bullded a temple He wrought it with grace and skill Pillars and groins and arches All fashioned to work his will Men said as they saw its beauty shall never know decay Great Is thy skill Builder Thy fame shall endure for A teacher bullded a temple With loving and infinite care Planning each arch with patience Laying each stone with prayer None praised her unceasing efforts None knew of her wondrous plan For the temple she bullded Was unseen by the eyes of man Gone is the temple Crumbled into the dust Low lies each stately pillar Food for consuming rust But the temple the teacher builded Will last while the ages roll For that beautiful unseen temple Is a immortal soulf Services Held For More Than 60 Years (By Rev Ernest Gander Pastor) The congregation of Zion Reformed church was formally organized in the fall of 1877 with Rev Daniel Greenwald as the organizing pastor although worship services were conducted during most of the time intervening from as early as 1871 At the first gathering fifteen persons signified their readiness in building Zion Worship services were then held in the school house that once stood on the VonBergen place The following communed at the first communion in June 1872: Mr and Mrs VonBergen Mr and Mrs Freiburghouse Mr and Mrs John Wittwer Christ Marmet and wife August Fritz Christ Dappen and Widow Oberle The first church building was erected in 1895 but in later years was The Meeting Place of Friends For many many years our store at Humboldt has been the meeting place of friends from the surrounding country and communities and we are always glad to welcome them Since the days when Dawson was young the people of that community have made our store their headquarters when coming to the on the and they come in ever increasing numbers one generation following the other ing organizations: Sunday School Missionary Society Missionary Guild Helping Hands Society (Ladies Aid and Literary Society) Choir and Intermediate Christian Endeavor Society AN EARLY DAY TEACHER Mrs Page (then Minnie Young) came to Nebraska with her parents in the spring of 1880 and being a competent and efficient teacher she was almost immediately appointed as teacher in the school nearest her home where the Chas Funk family now lives The Young home on the place now owned by Elvin Kerr was quite a distance from the school building1' and Mrs Page recalls that in the winter of 1880-81 she walked to the school across the fields with snow drifts fence high in many places Later she taught at the Grand Avenue school and at the Hudson school opposite Star cemetery Among her pupils were Jessie Buser (Mrs Kinsey) Harvey Hudson Will Belden Inez Belden (Gravatte) Charles and Clarence Allen John Cornelius and Nellie and Kitty Cornelius Miss Young was married to Page at the home of her parents September 22 1881 at seven in the evening the ceremony being performed by Rev Mr Heacock blind pastor of the Presbyterian church at Humboldt The bride at that time was teaching at the Hudson school and boarding with the Buser family who fanned nearby A few months after the wedding the young couple moved to the Page farm southwest of Dawson where they lived until 1902 when they moved into Dawson 40 YEARS AGO IN DAWSON The Dawson Newsboy of Feb 8 1895 contained a lot of interesting news items Among them was one stating a big blizzard had raged all day Wednesday mixing snow and dust and that the thermometer had dropped to 20 below Three cars of brick had been shipped in for the new bank building and five more were expected at once Market quotations on hogs were 380 wheat 50c corn 40c oats 30c butter 15c and eggs 12c A TRIBUTE TO MRS RILEY In the Dawson community there is one not to be classed as a pioneer who is creating material for future historical editions our beloved townswoman Anne Rush Riley A city girl Anne Rush came from Omaha to Dawson in 1911 the bride of Dan Riley She has ever taken our little village to her heart and for a quarter of a century has been unfailing in her efforts to promote the best interests of her church the schools and the socr Among1 her numerous activities may be listed her membership in the Foresters the Altar Society of St church founder and charter member of the Tuesday Literary Club and Friends of Music organization each one giving an out
