El Paso Herald -Post Editorials-Sports-Comics Markets-Classified Section Wednesday August 5 1964 Page B-l Inez Robb New York Senator Sizzles In Coldwater Political Pan 'Where Are We Northeast El Paso Again on Upgrade illllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll hlllllllllllillllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllilllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll By INEZ ROBB NEW YORK Sen Kenneth Keating NY is a handsome man with a fresh rosy complexion a thick crest of silver white hair and a lively wit that one is not apt to confuse with the melancholy Dane Yet at the moment the senator epitomises the Hamlet like dilemma of many moderate Republicans up for re-election in a variety of state and federal jobs November Sen dilemma and that Of many other GOP moderates is the central issue of a troubled Hamlet pondering be or not to be: That is the Tobeornottobeonthe regular Republican ticket with Sen Barry Goldwater Or to be an independent running within the framework of the Republican ticket hut disassociated from Goldwater policies Or not to run at A NOVELIST OR DRAMA-T1ST stealing a title from George Meredith might call this August drama Ordeal of Kenneth These are days of hard decision for the New York senator who Is 19 for re-election in provided he decides to make the race New Junior senator has not yet declared his intentions but ho is expected to do so by mid-August a fortnight before (he state Republican convention Although Sen Keating continues to emphasize that his differences with Sen Goldwater are philosophical and political and not personal he was one of the liberal Republicans at the GOP National Convention who made no effort to hide his distress at the conduct and outcome of that conclave One of the very real problems that Sen Keating must assess in the next 10 days is whether he can expect support from his own party if he decides to run as an independent within the Republican party HE HAS NO INTENTION of going Off the GOP reservation But tiie question is whether the party will support him or try to purge him if he runs sans Sen Goldwater Sen Keating is not a rich man and he must ponder the financial burden of a campaign if his party deserts him It is a dilemma he shares with other moderate Republicans The power of a political party to punish the maverick or independent is tremendous It cannot be ignored I do not want to be but when Sen Keating appeared the other day at the Overseas Press Club many of us thought that he spoke in an elegiac and nonpartisan mood He emphasized some simple but powerful truths for both parties when he said: "The slogan of however appealing it may round is not in tiie king term a helpful one There is danger in promising easy solutions to our danger that we will foster the illusion of quick and sweet success within a matter Of months or even years and the distrust and lack of confidence that will arise out of frustration TRUTH there is no lever to be pulled that will solve tiie problems at once Present policy is less than satisfactory but let's not compound the confusions and mistakes of our past policies by unsound promises to produce unrealistic objectives of the weapons of earn munism is patience Even Khrushchev when he promised to bury us did not suggest he would be wielding the shovel himself He contented himself with the suggestion that our grandchil- dren would be living under communism my judgment both parties would be doing our nation great service if they would put less emphasis on quick easy solutions and more emphasis on a determined long-termed commitment In domestic as well as foreign politics little is achieved on short notice But in foreign policy the quest for easy or instant victories can ba not only disappointing but was
