Maxim into a bleeding hulk to' win the 175 pound title by unanimous de cision Ignored by one champion after another fo'r over five years the'uncrowned made offi cial tonight by blasting the steel chinned 30 ycar old Clevelander with a blistering barrage of punches from beginning to end A roaring crowd of 12610 in the St Louis Arena and millions more along the const to coast television benrn watched the powerful 36 ycar old Negro score his one sided triumph Thus Moore became the oldest light heavyweight king since Ruby Bob itzsimmons grabbed the crown at the age of 41 Maxim's defeat came in his third defense of the crown he won nearly three years ago The challenger fired up for his moment rocked the champion in the very first round staggered him often afterwards but couldn't bring the game Maxim down At the finish Maxim was bleed ing from cuts under both eyes from a gash on his left cheek bout and from the nose There was nq doubt as to what the decision was going to be Judge Howard Hess scored it 82 88: Judge red Connell had it 87 63 whi'c Referee Harry Kessler who kept up a running fire of chatter throughout the fight had it sur prisingly close 76 74 The Associated Press had Moore the winner 87 63 giving Moore 12 rounds Maxim two and calling one even One of the rounds the fourth went to Joey because of a low blow Moore who was out weighed 174 to 172 was the 8 to 5 favorite when the bout got under way But after the seventh round you could have gotten a 100 to 1 op the battered champion The challenger who has lost only une fight in nearly three and a half vears poured on the pace in a relentless fashion ighting out of a crouch he whaled Maxim's body with devastating body punches that took the spring out of Maxim legs cut his face to ribbons and rocked him in Scrap Second By MURRAY ROSE ST LOUIS Dec 17 IB A threat by challenger Archie Moore's Manager "to call the fight off" a double weigh in for cham pion Joey Maxim a faulty 'scale and lots of screaming enlivened the weigh in today for 15 round light heavyweight title scrap at the Arena About one hour and 40 minutes after the weighing ceremony was to have taken place at noon (CST) it was announced officially that the weights of the glad iators were 174 for Maxim and 172 for Moore After oncei threatening to call the fight offi Charley Johnston manager calmed down and declared "The fight's on After all we're shooting for the title ain't One observer who watched the entire rhubarb from beginning to end said "If the fight's as good as the weigh in it ought to be a The confusion started when John ston noticed that the scales were not sealed and insisted that he would not permit his 36 year old challenger to weigh in unless the scales were tested and approved by the weights and meas ures experts The weight men were summoned but when they didn't arrive by 12:58 Jack (Doc) Kearns manager of the champ insisted that Maxim be weighed immedia tely Commissioner Chaley Plan of the Missouri Athletic Commission agreed' Maxim then tipped the beam at exactly 175 the division limit Johnston however declared that Moore would not weigh in until the scales were checked and that Maxim would have
