bob-white have repopulatad the Elkhom River valley and other scattered pockets erf quail cover since the winter of 1968-69 Generally toe cover picture across the state should favor hunters The harvest started ahead of schedule in most areas With dry weather farmers should have most of toe corn and mllo out of the field by opening day Limits this year on pheasants are 3 dally with 15 in possession and the season closes January 17 forbott ringnecks and quafl Bob-white limits are 8 a day with 16 fat possession Only cock ringnecks arc legal quarry to Barbee Best areas far western Nebraska will probably be in toe north-central Panhandle with tte southern edge of the Panhandle not for behind "Our surveys indicate that area should bis good but many old-timers there are predicting toe best season in many years Barbee noted Quail hunting in the Panhandle is limited but scatter-gunner will still have an opportunity for an upland mixed bag as gsuie will still be legal The grouse season with a November IS dosing overlap the first 9 days of the pheasant season Prospects also appear bright along the southern one-third of the state for rlngneck hunters and should be especially good in toe rainwater basin and other areas of south-central Nebraska The Southwest will provide an ample share of Nebraska's pheasant hunters can look forward to a 1970 season that should be "generally much better than last year" according to Willard Barbee director of the Came and Parks Commission Surveys run this summer by game technicians showed only a slight statewide increase in pheasant numbers of about percent but the Commis-s ion's men in the field report sighting good numbers of ring-necks in many areas as toe November 7 season opener approaches November 7 is also opening day for the quail season and prospects on that front are at least as bright In general most of Nebraska south of toe Platte River will offer fair to good ring-neck bunting and parts of toe Panhandle will provide their share of pheasants according TIm Haymakers won another Important Southwest Conference Came at Broken Bow last Wednesday night but It was a hard fought victory and left the Haymakers and most of their fans reeling at the end of the game The Haymakers scored first to lead 7 to 0 but Broken Bow tied fire game in the third quarter but Coiad tallied two more touchdown to lead 19 to 7 The Indians were not to be uiird and cored again fat the fourth quarter to cut the Cored lead to 19 to 14 With 2 minutes to pUy the Broken Bow team put on uy the drive was stopped shut at die ten yard line as time ran out Stan Headley turned in an out-tandfcrg performance as he figured in 11 three touchdowm The Cornhuskets kept their poise at Colorado Saturday and came home with a 29 to 13 victory The key play of the game had to be Jeff Kinney's punt return of 76 yards in the fourth quarter From then on the Cornhuskets were unstop able We all know a-bout Jeff Kinney and it makes us proud that he is doing so defensively Headley and Doug Nichols stood out on offeree pheasants as will the southeast Quail hunting prospects appear better than last year in the river systems and otter isolated areas of quail habitat in the southwest surd southcentral regions of toe state But toe best bobwhite sport should again be in thq extreme southeastern counties where the outlook appears to be excellent The Sand Hills area offers only limited pheasant habitat but prospects in those areas are somewhat Improved over last year eqrecially in toe southern portion of Ae "Hill" The pheasant population in much Of northeast Nebraska is still recovering from heavy losses during toe hard winter of 1968-69 but birds in parts of toe area appear to have made a strong comeback In general best hunting in toe STATS:
