Transfer Welch Aids Norfolk Over Beatrice By RANDY YORK Prep Sports Editor Beatrice Two years ago, when Dave Welch decided to advance from Class to Class A football, he knew what he was doing. The Horned Frogs of the Southwest Conference, who had won five consecutive meetings between the two schools, appeared on their way to rout of the Southland Mavs with a quick first- quarter touchdown on freshman Ricky two-yard run. But the inspired Mavs struck for 10 points in the second quarter and thoroughly dominated pro-style offense in the second half. TCU could only get out of its end of the field one time in the final two quarters. After Chris Walker kidted a 34-yard field goal, Dobbins took UTA on a 66-yard drive climaxed by his two-yard touchdown run. TCU had minus-six yards rushing in the first half and only had a total offense of 31 yards as a crowd of 17,442 looked on in dismay.

After starting for the Norfolk Catholic varsity as a freshman, Welch transfered to Norfolk High to follow brother Greg, now a freshman middle guard for Wayne State College. Although he had to play reserve ball as a to comply with transfer requirements, Welch made a wise decision. The pound wingback shared with quarterback David Copple as the Panthers rebounded from a 7-0 first quarter deficit. Welch finished with 79 yards rushing on only carries and caught a pair of passes for 62 yards. One was a 21-yard touchdown pass fnnn Copple on a play.

two biggest plays, however, were momentum- snappers in the first and second quarters. Three plays and 1:25 after senior quarterback Doug Lovell staked Beatrice to its early advantage, Welch put Norfoi on the scoreboard with a 55 yard toudidown on an inside reverse. Welch also turned the big defensive play. With Beatrice clinging to a 7-6 lead and threatening to expand it, he raced up from his safety pontion and intercepted a look-in pass at the Norfolk 91 with 1:42 remaining before halftime. Welch returned it 98 yards and Norfolk needed only two plays to feature RACES At Bay Meadows cover the remaining 11 yards to the end zone.

Copple hit favorite target Jim D(Han. a split end, for nine yards, ran for two yards for the touchdown and hit Welch with a pass for the two-point conversion. That gave the Panthers breathing room and a 14-7 halftime cushion. Copple, also a standout basketball player and quartermiler in track, produced the to Beatrice hopes in the third quarter. He intercepted a Lovell pass, giving Norfolk the ball on its own 34 yard line.

plays later, Copple faked into the line and scored on a 45-yard around right end. The play before, Copple hooked up with tight Phil Zastrow for a 21-yard pass. The touchdown came with 3:17 remaining in the third period. While Welch and Copple shared offensive heroics, senior tackle Jim Molini (6-2, 203) inflicted the most damage defensively. StUL Beatrice cnitrushed Norfolk, 200-179.

But the Orangemen were plagued by nine fumbles, two of which were lost, two interceptions and 39 yards in penalties.
