Max Gausman at the home of Mrs. Bob Davenport Tuesday evening, Nov. 7. Games were played after, which she opened her many and useful gifts. Delicious, refreshments were served to the 10 guests present.

BOWEN- JENKINS Mrs. Nellie Bowen of Belleville and Roy Jenkins of Belleville, formerly of Chester, were married at the Methodist parsonage Thursday morning, November 25. The Thanksgiving wedding ceremony was performed by the Rev. James Gray in the presence of Mr. and Mrs.

Floyd Sims. The bride was dressed in navy with a corsage of white carnations, Mrs. Sims wore grey with a pink carnation corsage. Following a wedding breakfast at the Elliott coffee shop here, Mr. and Mrs.

Jenkins took a week end trip to Lincoln and Grand Island, They are at home in Belleville Telescope. CHICK- -HOLMES A a quiet ceremony Mrs. Emma Chick of Hebron and Mr. Elmer Holmes of Deshler were married on Nov. 24 at Nelson by the Rev.

Williams of Nelson. The happy couple left Nov, 30 on an extended trip to the west coast. Star of Hope Rebekah Lodge met in regular session on Monday evening with Guila George, N.G. presiding. It was voted to send money to the I.O.0.F.

Home in York for Christmas and a Christmas gift from the lodge to Mrs. Pearl Brown, a former Chester resident, who now lives at the home. The fifteen members present were invited to the home of Sister Esther Huckins for a social hour after lodge, A lovely lunch was served by Mrs. Huckins and Miss Mary Sutter. Our next meeting will be a Christmas party at the home of Minnie Duey, Observe Golden Wedding Anniversary Mr.

and Mrs. W. 0. Huckins On Sunday, Nover 28, about 200 relatives and called at the open house hell the Methodist Church parlold from 2:30 to 5 o'clock in honor of the 50th wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs.

W. O. Huckins. who were married on Nov. 30, 1904, at Hebron, Nebr.

The serving table was graced with a tiered wedding cake. Mrs. Verne Krause, Mrs. G. J.

Huckins, Mrs. J. L. George and Mrs. Henry Bucholz poured during the afternoon and Miss Mary Sutter had charge of the guest book.

Those assisting with refreshments were Mrs. Lloyd Cook, Mrs. R. A. Claybaker, Mrs, Lucille Parsons, Mrs.

Bill Hartley, Mrs. Wm. Strong and Mrs. Fred Thompson. Safe Driving Day December 15th President Eisenhower has named Wednesday, Dec.

15, as driving day for the entire country. This is being done in an effort to reduce the deaths from traffic accidents. How should the individual motorist or pedestrian observe SafeDriving Day? by accepting personal responsibility for observing all safety procedures: 1. Observe the letter and spirit of all traffic regulations. a.

Signal your turns and stops to acquaint other motorists with your intentions. b. Be extra alert and slow down at railroad crossings. C. As a pedestrian, cross, streets correctly at intersections.

2. Be courteous to every other driver and pedestrian. a. "Give a break" to pedestrians and turning motorists. b.

Practice good sportsmanship. 1. Keep to the right. 2. Stay in your lane, 3.

If you, as a driver and pedestrian, are safety conscious, traffic. 80- cidents can be reduced TAKE IT EASY KEEP YOUR SPEED DOWN LUTHERAN LADIES AID St. John's Lutheran Ladies' Aid met Thursday afternoon, Dec, 2, in the church parlors.

The meeting opened by singing hymn, Little Town Of Bethlehem" with scripture lesson and prayer by Rev. Hilst. A film strip picture, "This Is Our Family" was shown by Rev. Hilst. A delicious lunch was served to twenty-six members and three visitors, Mrs.

Worner of Green Valley, Mrs. Gene Spannenberg and Mrs. Hilbert Thaete of Belleville by the hostesses, Mrs. Art Vorderstrasse, Mrs. John Flathman Jr.

and Mrs. R. A. Jagels. THE WEATHER The rain which fell Saturday night amounted to about .50 inches.

The weather since has been mostly clear and cool. Down to 20 degrees in early morning and rising to the high 40's during the day. More moisture is needed as Saturdays rain was the first since Oct. 25 when .30 inch fell. This Wednesday morning brought snow which melted almost as fast as it fell.

A grey sky looks as if the hoped for moisture could be had. Dr. and Mrs. R. A.

Claybaker and Johnnie were coffee guests of Mr. and Mrs. Reuben Schleifer and Stanley following the operetta, Tuesday evening. Mrs. Nellie Donnell was released from the Thayer County Hospital on Dec.

1, and is improving in health. Lucretia Fulton of Hebron is staying with Mrs. Donnell at her home. Gene Kuhlmann, son of Mr. and Mrs.

WHbert Kuhlmann of Chester, underwent an appendectomy Friday, Dec. 3, in the Thayer County Hospital, He was reported to be recovering satisfactorily Saturday. Larry Lee Barham, 12 year' old son of Mr. and Mrs. L.

W. Barham, and grandson of Mrs. Erma Robertson, was operated on Saturday for a brain tumor in San Francisco, Calif, This 19 the third operation Larry, has undergone for brain tumors, the first two being when he was four years old. At the present time he seems to be recovering, although his condition is serious. His parents are staying at the Kelly home at 924 Melcher, San Leandro, while Larry is in the hospital, Howard Ireland of Martin, So.

Dakota and Mrs. Letha Carpenter of Lenora, spent from Friday until Monday with their sister, Mrs. Effie Hazen, HENRY GEBERS DIES Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon, Dec. 9 at 2 o'clock at St. John's Lutheran Church for Henry Gebers, 80, who passed away Tuesday morning, Dec.

7, at the hospital at Hebron. Mr. Gebers had been seriously ill for some time, W. C. RHEA TO RETIRE AS POSTMASTER JAN.

31 W. C. Rhea will meet the requirements for automatic retirement on account of age on January 31, 1955. Mr. Rhea has served as postmaster in Chester for years.

He entered the postal service on July 1, 1936, relieving Clarence Struble, postmaster at that time. In his years of service in the Chester office Mr. Rhea has seen stamp sales increase from $2000 in 1936 to a high of $5900.00 in 1953. Sales for 1954 will probably decline from the '53 high, It is not known at this time who will succeed Mr. Rhea as postmaster.

A temporary appointment will be made and an examination will be held at 8 later date. O.E,S. NOTICE Eastern Star will meet Monday evening, Dec. 13, 7:30, at which time election of officers will be held. A social gathering will be held at the home of Mrs.

held at the regular meeting on December 6. WOMAN'S OLUB NOTICE The Chester Woman's Club will meet Wednesday evening, Dec, 15, with husbands as invited guests for the meeting. Rev. Frank Bartleson will give the program, The Christmas Story in Colored Slides. There will be tea at the close of the evening.

Dakota. They arrived home Wednesday, Dec, 1. Vernetta Davenport, student at Peru College spent the Thanksgiving week end with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Davenport and family.

Mr. and Mrs. Davenport took her back to Peru last Sunday, Mrs. E. Nesmith, Mrs.

G. D. Van Cleef and Mrs. Ray Peake. spent Saturday in Lincoln.

Mrs. Annie Adamson WAS 8 Sunday dinner guest of her sister, Mr. and Mrs. G. Hoffmeyer of Deshler, honoring Mrs.

Hoffmeyers birthday. Other dinner guests were Mr. and Mrs. Wm. West of Tobias, Mr.

and Mrs. Henry West and Herman meyer. of Deshler, Mr. and Mrs. Orval Davidson and family and Donna witsch of Lincoln spent Saturday overnight and Sunday with Mr.

and Mrs. Cliff Derowitsch and Dennis. Mrs. Derowitsch accompanied them to Lincoln Sunday evening and returned home day evening. Mrs.

Lottie, M. Cummins of Lincoln came Wednesday evening and spent Thanksgiving with her. parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harley Dry.

"Ray" Garvin, of Glendale, assistant comptroller in Security-First National Bank's head office, this week observes a quarter century with the bank. A native of Chester, he obtained his early schooling there before working for the Lincoln National Bank and Trust Co. of Lincoln and later the Standard Oil of Nebraska, In 1929, Garvin moved to Southern California and at the present time he and his wife, Mary, reside at 1533 Irving. Oscar Ray Garvin is the son of Telva. and Ed Garvin, The family lived in Chester for many years and still visit here, the last visit being about a year ago.

WALLACE BOSTELMANN LETTERS IN FOOTBALL The Athletic Office at Concordia Teachers College, Seward, has released the name of Wally Bostelmann who earned an athletic letter in football this season. Coach Herb Meyer made the announcement. Mr. and Mrs. H.

D. Herald and Mr. and Mrs. Harve Hartman were Sunday evening visitors in the Chas. Butts home.

NEUS The Chester Schools have joined the Junior Red Cross for the coming year. The elementary school has filled four boxes to be sent to needy children. There was $157 taken in from the magazine sales. $55.15 of this goes to the school, which the girls will use to help pay for their new volleyball suits. The school has recently bought and installed seven new fire extinguishers, complying with the Fire Marshall's recommendations for a safe school house.

The seventh grade pupils are working on maps of Nebraska, locating cities, rivers, highways and industrial regions, Everyone is busy practicing for the operetta. The advanced ho me making class are working on a "Pumpkin They are making pumpkin pies, regular, chiffon and ice cream, pumpkin pudding, pumpkin cake, and canning and freezing pumpkin. The fifth grade is studying bus. iness letters, and have been composing some for examples. The sixth grade is studying the principal parts of regular and irregular verbs.

Beth Hartley, Kathy Messman, Ronnie Moxham, Bonnie Bohling, Shirley Duey, Rodney Larkins, Marilee and Marilyn Mathiesen, have not been absent or tardy the second six weeks. The following pupils in the first and second grade had a perfect attendance for the past six-weeks period: grade one, Alice Dunn, Cheryl Hoops, Johnny James, Patty Korensky and Delmer Truss. Grade two, Johnny Claybaker, Bruce Crouse, Jerry Frye, Sharyn Huckins, Susan Rieke, Bobby Roop and Jimmy Williams. Marilyn Jo Truss visited the room last Wednesday afternoon. The following third and fourth grade earned 100 in their six weeks spelling test: Kathy Ray, Judy Brockhoff, Barbara Bauer, Marla Jean Hoops, Marilyn Schlife.

Marilyn Schlife has had 100 in all her Friday's spelling tests so far this year, The attendance of Chester High School has been very poor in the past six weeks, only 16 out of the 71 students had perfect attendance. Absences in some cases are unavoidable, such as illness, but absences due to trivial matters as being too tired or didn't feel like coming today are unexcusable and should not be tolerated. Excuses as the latter show the lack of interest which some students have in school.
