Brandon Vaughan Madden COLUMBIA Brandon Vaugh- an Madden, of Columbia and Pawleys Island, died in Columbia on September 11. She was 83. Mrs. Madden was born April 15, 1934 in Roxboro, NC. She was the daughter of Celina McGregor Vaugh- an and James Alexander Vaughan.

Brandy grew up in Columbia and met her one and true love, Arthur Mad- den, there. She studied at Converse College and was graduated from the Univer- sity of South Carolina. She also studied at The Johns Hopkins University while her husband was in medi- cal school. Brandy married Arthur on June 8, 1956. They moved to Baltimore for Arthur to at- tend medical school.

Then they moved to Atlanta, so he could finish training. Af- ter all the trials and tribula- tions of being broke stu- dents, they moved to Nor- folk where Arthur served on active duty in the Navy. They lived there just before and during the Cuban mis- sile crisis, and it was a try- ing time for a young mother of two. A good thing came out that crisis. Afterwards, her husband was deployed on a Show the Flag tour in the Mediterranean, and Brandy was able to travel through the Mediterranean, shadow- ing the fleet.

She and her husband had a blast to- gether. The two children had been left at grandmo- house--of course. Many years later after her death, she was able to tour the Mediterra- nean again. She visited many of the small towns and cities she had been to before and, again, she had a blast. She did enjoy life! She, Arthur, and the chil- dren moved back to Atlanta for two years and then moved to Columbia.

As the children, now four of them, left the nest, Brandy spent more time at Pawleys Is- land, probably her most fa- vorite place on earth. She was a member of The As- sembly. Brandy was the best mom and she loved her family dearly, especially her grand- children. She loved to spoil her grandchildren. She loved the beach and her wild birds; she was quite a lucky lady in so many ways.

She is survived by her four children: Helen Hefner Madden, Arthur Allen Brandon Vaughan Madden, James Emmett Madden and his wife Suzy; 4 grandchildren: Kelley, Arthur, McGregor, and Emmett; her nephew, James Vaughan, was espe- cially dear to her. She is predeceased by her hus- band, Arthur Allen Madden, and her brother, James Alexander Vaughan. Brandy children are hopeful that heaven is full of beautiful birds and no squirrels. Heaven in- deed. Family will receive friends at 5 p.m.
