TTiursdoy, Moy 3, 1973 31 CHICAGO (UPI) - secretary of State Michael Hewlett announced today hit office will hire ex-convicts "on their merits and their potential usefulness. "Hiey will find no cold shoulder in our office," he said in a j speech prepared for delivery to the John Howard Association. "We know they can serve the people of Illinois faithfully and well. We wilt provide incentive for them to do it." Howlett said he is appointing an advisory committee to help him screen applicants who have a criminal record. "We have nearly 4,000 em ployes and some of these positions are sensitive," he said. "For instance, we would want thorough investigation and careful consideration before appointing a convicted felon to a job which requires the incumbent to carry a pistol and assume the duties of a peace officer." Howlett said the advisory committee members will be Julius Hemmelstein, president of the John Howard Association; Joseph Vadovicky, Vice president of the William Blair & Co. investment firm; Chicago Mercantile Exchange President Everett B. Harris and Charles [tatum, president of the Gateway National Bank. "We will go as far as we can within the framework of the law and the state personnel code to recruit ex-offenders on their merits and their potential usefulness," Howlett said If the problem is sunburn or windburn, apply a paste of baking soda and water to irritated area. If possible, soak in baking soda bath. Mercantile Exchange CHICAGO (UPI) - Futures on the Chicago Mercantile Ex- High Low Close Prev.
