The North Carolina coach continues to fire blanks at the Wolfpack. Smith's teams haven't beaten North Carolina Slate since the 1971-72 season and Saturday his frustrating streak was extended to nine games with an 88-85 overtime loss.

"1 am very proud of Ihc way Hie team played, but of course we are bitterly disappointed," said Smith. North Carolina Slate hasn't been as mistake-proof as last season when the a bounced UCLA out of the a i a championship. The defending national champions already have been beaten by two ACC colleagues, Wake Forest and Maryland. They only lost one game all of last season and none the previous season. "Taking the nation's fourth- ranked team Into overtime on their home court certainly is an oustanding accomplishment," said Smith, "but I must lake the blame for this defeat, not our players.

No one player lost this game I did." In Saturday's other games, No. 1 Indiana crushed Northwestern 82-56; No. 2 UCLA routed California 102-72; No. 3 Ixiuisville nipped Drake 55-53 in i i a Maryland trounced Navy 87-73; Stanford stunned No. 6 Southern Cal G7-66; No.

7 Alabama whipped Louisiana Slate 93-67; No. 8 Oregon a Washington 68-fiG; No. 9 Arizona State posted a 93-76 victory over New Mexico, and No. 10 Kentucky held off Mississippi 85-82, Powerful Indiana had little trouble with Northwestern. The Hoosiers took a 10-polnt lead at the half behind Kent Benson and built it to 29 In the second half.

Benson finished with 20 points as Indiana improved its winning streak to 19 games, tops in the nation. Dave Meyers and Rich Washington each scored 17 points, Andre McCarter had 16 and three other UCLA players scored in double figures as the Bruins rebounded from their first loss of the season and beat California. UCIA was upset Friday night by Stanford. Wesley Cox scored 17 points, including two free throws with nine seconds left in overtime, leading Louisville over Drake. The Cardinals were given a reprieve when Drake's Ken Harris missed a shot at the end of regulation.

John Lucas scored 20 points in only 26 i pacing Maryland over Navy. Tom Roy, the only Maryland starter to play more than 30 minutes led both teams in rebounding with 13. Rich Kclley, with his second big game In a row, scored 30 points to power Stanford over Southern Cal and help the Cardinals complete a weekend sweep of the Pac-8's two strongest teams. Southern Cal Coach Bob Boyd credited Kelley as "the key factor in our I thought that Kelley made the critical free throws and got the critical rebounds to give Stanford the win. With Kelley Stanford can beat anybody." Charles Russell had 26 points and Charles Cleveland scored 22, carrying Alabama past LSU.

The Crimson Tide started slowly but broke away from the Tigers with a 16-2 spurt late in the first half. The game was virtually decided at halftlmc, when Alabama held a 43-24 lead. VC Cheer Leaders Win 1st COCHTCANTON Scoring 271 out of a possible 275 points, the 'Venango Christian High School varsity cheer leaders won the first place trophy at a cheer leading clinic held Saturday at Cochranton High School. Second place went to Northwestern and Meadville gained third place. Seven members of the VCHS varsity cheerleading team participated in the event.

OUier schools entered were Cambridge Springs, Conneaut Lake, Conneaut Valley, Cranberry, General McLane, Harborcreek, Northwestern, a a i Reynolds, Rocky Grove, Saegertown, and Wattsburg. TWO WORLD RECORD HOLDERS MEET Krancie Larrieu gets a hug from teammate Dwight Stones after she set an indoor world record In the women's 1,000 meter run Saturday night at the Sunkist Invitation track meet in Los Angeles, Sports Roundup Keith Wilkes Best Basketball Rookie By PHIL F.LDERKIN The Kcellir Nepri Serrict, Cdirriltt II" Hopscotchlng the Sports World for Headlines-- The fact that the Golden State Warriors are leading their division and the Atlanta Hawks probably won't make the .500 mark should be all the edge Keith Wilkes needs to finish ahead of Tom Henderson as the NBA's Rookie of the Year. Wilkes, so fundamentally sound that Warrior Coach Al Allies couldn't believe it at first, has made far fewer mistakes than mosl rookies. "Early in the season I felt overmatched a few times against rival forwards like Spencer Haywood and Elvin Hayes," Keith said. "Actually I was so awed by their reputations that I had to fight a tendency to watch them and not guard them.

But I don't feel that way anymore." Wilkes, at the NBA's mid-January all-star gsme break, was averaging 14 points and nine rebounds a game for Golden State. The way the Pittsburgh Steelers built to a Super Bowl championship in less than six years is interesting, Of the 47 players on the Steelers, 42 came either via the college football draft or were signed as free agents. Only five were acquired from rival teams. Pittsburgh scouts get the major share of plaudits here. But give Coach Chuk Noll and his assistants credit for polishing their talents and then fitting them into their proper spots.

Don't look for home run king Hank Aaron to become the Milwaukee Brewer's general mangers after he's through playing. "I like to use men where they are best fitted and I don't feel Aaron's talents lie in that direction," said Owner Bud Selig. "Instead I think Hunk probably should be used at the player development level, which is vastly underrated part of baseball. 1 find that mosl young ballplayers like to talk hitting with Aaron and he communicates with them extremely well." Three times a Super Bowl runnerup, but never a winner, the veteran-oriented Minnesota Vikings stand on the other side of the scale from the experienced but young Pittsburgh Steelers. Vikings' Coach Bud Grant will have the dclecate job during the next two seasons of moving some of his established people out and bringing in rookies without upsetting the overall balance of his team.

The Stanley Cup the world championship trophy of pro hockey has a unique history. During it's long history, It has been thrown into a graveyard, kicked in a canal, tossed out of a speeding car and for several months was used as a flower pot. And the first time it was stolen, nobody bothered to look for it at least notright away. Actually Stanley's Cup is a cheap mixture of nickel-based alloys that had an original value of around $48.67. Frankly, I have seen punch bowls with more personality.

From Auburn basketball coach Bob Davis on 6 ft. 8 in. freshman sensation Mike Mitchell: "He filed his fingernails by dragging them along the sidewalk." The Baltimore Orioles, up for sale, made a profit of only $82,700 during the fiscal year that ended on Oct. 31 last. The difference between black and red Ink for the Orioles was their appearance in the American League playoffs.

"We haven't lost too much money over the years," said Baltimore's executive vice-president Frank Cashen, "but we haven't made much either." The Orioles had the best won-lost record in the majors in 1974 when they won the American League's Eastern Division title for the fifth time in six years. Baseball Hall of Famer Joe DiMagglo, who was always shy when he played with the Yankees and never could handle the spotlight while married to Marilyn Monroe, comes across great these days as a television pitchman. It is doubtful if anyone will ever break DiMaggio's all- time record of hitting safely in 56 consecutive games. From Pittsburgh Steelers 1 QB Terry Bradshaw on running a pro football offense: "You don't have to be Albert Einstein to play quarterback in the National Football League. You just need good football sense.

My early learning problems with the Steelers stemmed from the fact that I was only 21 years old. It was just too much for anyone my age to handle right away. Hut I'm not stupid. I learned like everybody else. Now I'm just living up to what everybody said I'd be in the first place, I belong here and I know It." Sports Shorts Of Sorts REIT IM WINKL, Germany (AP) Norway's Tom Sandberg won the combined title at the International Nordic ski competition Sunday with a total of 429.773 points.

Stefan Hula of Poland was second with 421.472 points and Paal Schjetne of Norway finished third with 421.361. Mike Devecka of Bend, was the top American, placing 14th with 382.442 points. NEW YORK (AP) Manager Bill Virdon, who guided the New York Yankees to a surprising second-place finish in the American League East last year, will be honored by the New York Baseball Writers at their annual dinner Feb. 2. Virdon will receive the Ben Epstein "Good Guy Award" in recognition of "his willingness to cooperate with the press, his accessibility and his being a 'good The award is named after Jhe late sports writer of the New York Daily Mirror.

Franklin Dunks Oil City Swimmers Stones, who had just set a world record in the high Friday night, broke his own record with a of 7 feet, 5Vt inches during the meet giving both members erf the Pacific Coast club new world indoor records. Ripley, Believe It Or Not, Vaults 18 Feet For Record LOS ANGELES Dan Ripley said his world record was a matter of hard work, Dwight Stones said his new mark was due to getting up on the right side of the bed and Francie larrieu said she had no doubts about running last. AU three set world standards Saturday night in Ihc 16lh Sunkist Invitational Track Meet but Hipley's pole vault of 18 feet, 1 inch grabbed the headlines. "I was relaxed and just wanted to do well," said the unassuming 21-year-olri from San Jose State. "The crowd was real nice, kind of helped me, but this is the biggest meet I've ever been in.

1 really didn't think I had a chance to make it but I was so relaxed that when 1 did 17-6 I knew I could get the record." The mark surpassed Steve Smith's set in 1973 and Pro Floor NBA Boston 102, Philadelphia 100 Milwaukee 122, Portland 108 A a a 1 1 7 Seattle 109 ABA New York 113. Virginia 91 made Ripley, believe it or not, only the second man in history to better 18 feel indoors. Stones, for the second time in 24 hours, set a world high jump record when he flopped over 7- (eet-5'j, one-quarter inch over what he'd done Friday night at Pocatello, Idaho. "It's usually a case of how I feel when I get up in the morning," said the excited Stones, holder of the outdoor record of 7-6V "You really can't expect a thing like this--world records on consecutive nights because I got home late from Pocatello. But I got five good hours of sleep and when I got up, 1 started bending my left ankle.

That's my takeoff ankle, and if it starts to crack I know it'll be weak, but it felt great and I felt great and I knew I was going to shoot for another record again." Miss 1-arrieu, a 22-year-old senior at UCLA who is a Pacific Coast Club teammate of Stones, ran 1,000 meters in 2:40.2, bettering the previous world indoor mark for women by 4.2 seconds. "I knew the world record would go," she said. "This is an excellent track and we had good competition." Rick Wohlhuler said he was not displeased with his 1:48.8 clocking in the half mile, a fast time since it was only nine tenths off the world record, but before the race the slender insurance man from Chicago said, "I don't think the record is exceptionally good." Steve Prefontaine captured the two-mile in 8:24.4 and said he ran away from John Ngcno of Washington State with six laps to go on the 11-lap-lo-lhe- mile track because "I'm through playing around; 1 want to beat these guys good." Rick Downing Wins Pool Event Rick Downing won the first place trophy in Saturday's pool tournament held at Hoover's Frosty Flavor in Cranberry. It was an 8-ball event. Other trophies went to Jack Morrison, 2nd place; Bob Zaccari, 3rd place: and Chuck Stahlman, 4th place.

Miss Evert (ought hard, trying to put the aggressive Ms. King off balance with high lobs, but it didn't work.
