Graziano was up at the count of four, but went down for keeps In the sixth. AP WtnpHott.

imams Series Talk Now JOYFUL BROOKS CERTAIN OF WIN NEW YORK, Sept. 28 UP i At 7 p. m. last night Brooklyn was so sure of a tie with tlie Cardinals that the playoff tickets already were printed; today those tickets 1 were forgotten the Dodgers and 1 the population of Brooklyn were talking world series. A wild surge of jubilation hit Flntbush with the news that the Cubs had flattened tlie Cards last night.

7 to 2, and there was only one thought: Were in! The average Dodger rooter, not completely heartless in this peculiar and perhaps premature elation, showed just a little pity for the Boston Braves, who play the Dodgers today and tomorrow. It was taken for (ranted that Leo Duroehrrs Bums, a spirited horde all season, would be virtually berserk today and charge irresistably over the gams but prostrate Braves. Outside of Brooklyn, though, there was some doubt. John Sain, Bostons 20-game wmner, was named by Manager South-worth to start against Brooklyn's lefty Joe Hatten. Hatten has won 13 and lost 10, and three of his wins are over Boston, which hasn't beaten him.

Sain has lost three to Brooklyn and He best-hitting another Osrar the hard as reason Dodgers world several third place so the Chicagoans With Broken Mitt ZALE FLATTENS TITLE HOPEFUL NEW YORK, Sept. 28 (INS) Tony Zale retained his worlds middleweight championship today with a right hand shattered In the second round on the macadam skull of Rocky Graziano and the fight mob was yelling real champion" and "the greatest fight ever." Gene Tunney, before he heard that the lithe business man from Gary, Indiana, had fought the last three and a half rounds with a right mitten that closely resembled a red derby hat (if there Is such a thing) said: Zale gave the greatest exhibition of heart I have ever seen." Tlie champion, and he was that In getting off the floor after a second round knockdown and wading helplessly through two more heats, got a green stick fracture of his right hand after belting Rocky In that frightening second round. Zale had dumped the walloping local pride In the first for a toil of five. That dumping was under a tremendous left houk that completely baffled the wild-swinging Rocky. Then, in tlie second, the seemingly conquered challenger suddenly had Zale on his drawers for a count of three.

And from there on In It was a terrific battle. Something to be seen in the movies, and then unbelievable. Something to be seen on a street corner between snarling taxi-cab drivers. Something between brothers in a Jungle. Nothing nice about it it all.

Then the sixth round, and as the roaring 39.827 fanatics, who stood on stools from the opening clang, and who had paid In the middleweight championship record gate of $342,497 for the privilege, Zale forgot his injured right hand. He crossed it with cannonading power to Graziano's short ribs to the left. Then a left hook and Ruby Goldstein, referee, practiced arithmetic up to ten. INVADE HANNIBAL FRIDAY: wwn 5Tf 3. Louis f'ardinals and the Brooklyn Dodgers headed into the final weekend deadlocked for first place in the National league. The co-leaders, with identical won and lost records, have only two gatnes left to play. Both will be at home, the Cards winding up the reason with the Chicago Cubs tonight and tomorrow afternoon at Sportsman's park, and the Dodgers clashing twice with Boston's Braves at Ebbets field. The Cubs, themselves In a battle for third place, shoved the Bed Birds Into a first place tie with the idle Brooks last night 'with a 7-8 victory. Hank Borowy, repeated his Sunday win over the Cards even to 1ihe extent of the same score hanging up his 12th victory although he was forced to retire lh the eighth because of a blister on his pitching hand.

Hooks Wyse, originally scheduled to hurl against the Birds tonight, took over and stopped the Cards the rest of the way. In the American league, Bob Feller, Cleveland Indians' great righthander, struck out six Detroit ijatsmen in a five inning relief stint to tie Rube Waddell's listed major league record of 343 strikeouts in a single season and defeat the Tigers 9-8. Recent research, however, revealed that Waddell in 1P04 actually fanned 349 more than the official record credits him with. Tex Hughson staggered through to his 30th victory as the Boston Red Sox downed the Washington A Senators, 5-4. The Chicago White Sox moved to within a half game of the fourth place Senators by taking both ends of a twin bill from the St.

Louis Browns, 7-3 and 8-3. -J In the only other National league game, the Cincinnati Reds, behind the five-hit pitching of Joe Beggs, shut out the Pittsburgh Pirates, 8-0. SUN: IN INDIANA" BECAUSE OF HIM" Bulldogs Down Zizzers For 12th Straight Win The winning streak of the Senior high school football team remained intact today, but Coach Roy Robertson is hoping that it wont be exposed to a more serious threat this season than the aggressive West Plains Zizzers offered last night. The Bulldogs nipped West Plains, 13-7, for their 12th win over a two-season span but it took a sudden strike against befuddled Zizzef' defense early in the third period to turn the trick. Halfback Jim Cunningham had just been. hurt making a tackle on the second play of the last half and his West Plains team mates saw their morale hit the skids.

The alert Bulldogs cut loose Jody Holden for a 25-yard gain, then Ray Haley passed to Johnny Weiser for 30 yards and a touchdown that brought SHS from behind. Clock Stops Em West plains gathered Its defense after that and held for four downs on the 15, then made a desperate bid In the last period that died on the forty-yard line.
