TONY LISCHWE 411 Bank of Galaiburg Building PHONE 343-1165 MILLERS' MUTUAL f*":>\ INSURANCE ASSN. OF ILLINOIS AUTO • HOME BUSINESS ST. LOUIS (UPI) — A 60(year-old bank president gave $50,000 to an extortionist after seeing two polaroid pictures showing the banker's wife tied in her bedroom, the FBI said Wednesday. William C. Dowd, president of the Missouri State Bank & Trust Co., was in his office Monday when the pictures were delivered to his secretary's desk in a briefcase. About 20 minutes earlier a man had forced his way into the Dowds' home in suburban Kirkwood. Mrs. Dowd said the intruder took some rings off her fingers, then tied her and took the pictures. Dowd was told over the telephone by the extortionist to comply with instructions given to him because Dowd's wife was in great danger. Dowd was told to take $50,000 in $10 and $20 bills to the lobby of the Gateway Hotel about six blocks from the bank and wait for a certain pay telephone in the lobby to ring. When the telephone rang, Dowd was- told to leave the money in a basement hallway of the hotel. He complied with the instructions and left the hotel. The money was taken from the hallway, apparently by the extortionist. Dowd said he called the FBI after he received the first telephone call from the extortionist. However, no suspect was arrested at the hotel. FBI agents accompanied Dowd to his home, where they untied Mrs. Dowd. The FBI did not report the incident to the St. Louis Police Department until Wednesday. The FBI gave no explanation for its handling of the matter.
