I nin vll KKinA ITT THE HERALDJ ATLANTIC COAST IJXM "wTTiy Don't "Women Ka? Pockets Kew York Star. Why don't women have, pockets? The carry their purses in their hands and their handkerchiefs in their bodices, and they carry a little bagabout as big as a pint cup on their arms, the exact use of which has never been defined. There is a liberal whole-saleness about the way a man provides in the construction of his dress for his own wants that is actually refreshing in comparison with the way women inconvenience themselves. A man has plentv of pockets. can carry "But when my husband told her was going to marry a girl she never saw she was startled, and said seme things about me that offended Gregorv, and so there hap bren estrangement.

But I think ehe would like me if she knew me. At le.nst 1 fthould try to make her. I can't remember my own mother, and Gregory's certainly would seem to come next to her." "I'm sure it does you credit, and the old lady ought to be ashamed of herself." I wanted to get up and kisa her then and there, but that would have spoiled the fun. The dress was just completed when a key was heard in the door. "That i3 my "husband," said my daughter-in-law; and I knew it was Gregory.

Up-stairs he caine, two steps at a time, opened the doer, and looked at us with a bright smile on his face. "This is as it should be," said he, Fanny, I shall kiss mother first this time." "Oh, Gregory, what ore-you about? This is Mm. Switzer, who is making my dress. At least I have thought so all day." "My dear," said "I have played a little trick on you, or rather let you play it on yourself, but yon have turned out as good as gold. I am Gregory's mother, my dear, and yours too, if you'll call me so." "Indeed, I will," said the dear girl; "but I've kept you sewing hard all day.

You see, I expected a Mrs. Switzer, and I "We've been all the more sociable for that, my dear," I said "and I'm glad it happened. I've been very foolish all the while, and Gregory has chosen a better wife for himself than I could have done." Aud eo I think to-day, for I believe there never was a better woman than Gregory's wife, Fanny. Steady Advertising Pays. When my son Gregory married Miss Morrison I gave him piecu of my mind, and told hi in I didn't rare if I never how him again.

Why? Oh, well I didn't like hfrr: she wasn't the sort of girl I'd have chosen. I had never seen her, but I knew she wasn't. WeJl, as I said, I told him what 1 thought of him and her, and tho boy showed hia temper, and for six months I never saw him. I bore it as long as I could, but a mother must not be a fool about her only boy, so one day, as he wouldn't come to me, I went to him, as the rascal knew I would. I went up to the office and walked up to the desk, and I was going to scold him, but bo-fore I knew it we had kissed made friends.

"And now you'll go and see Fanny," said he, "and I'll find you there when I come home at night." And after a little coaxing I went. The house was a -cunning little place, a mile or two but of town, and I must say it was very neat outside. I rang the bell, and before it stopped tinklingsome one opened the door. It was a pretty young woman, and when I asked if Mrs. Gregory Bray was at home she answered "Yes, that is my name.

I've been expecting you for an age." "How did you know I was coming?" I asked, puzzled to know how she knejv me, for we had never met before. "Oh, I didnjt know," said she. "Indeed, I had made up my mind you wouldn't; but it is a long way out here, I know. Come right up-stairs. Mi.s Jones was here yesterday to cut and baste, but we will find as much as we can do to do the trimming between us.

"Cool," I thought. Then I said: "I suppose you arc hav ing a dress made?" "A suit," said she; "skirt, basque, and dolman. I do hope you make nice buttonholes?" "I should hope 1 do," said I "If 1 couldn't I would be ashamed of myself." "So many can't, said she; but I told Miss Jones to send me an experienced hand and she said there was none better thau Mrs. Switzer." Now I began to understand. My daughter-in-law took me for a seamstress site expected, and if ever a woman had a chance I had one now.

Not a word did I say, and I sat down and went to work with a will. She was a pretty girl, that daughter-in-laAv of mine, and very chatty and sociable. I talked of this, and talked of that, but not a word did she say of her mother-in-law. At last I spoke right out about mothers-in-law "As a rule, mothers-in-law end daughters-in-law don't agree." She said "That's a very wrong state of things." 'Well, said "I suppose it is; but how do you account for it?" "I suppose young people are selfish when they are first in love," said she, "and forget old people's feeling3." "It is plain you are friendly with your mother-in-law," said I "I am sure I should be if I had ever seen her." "Oh, then I have been mjsin-fotmed," said I. "1 was told Mr.

Gregory Bray was the son of Mrs. Bray who lives on Blank strcBt. 'That is perfectly true, but still we have never met." "How singular!" said I. "Fve heard she was a very queer olo lady." "You haven' heard the truth, then," said my daughterin-latrrt1 "My husband'? mother is a very I fine woman in every respect. ViUsinotGii Veldon Railroad it ii a Schedule.

When the exigencies of the weather cause him to have recourse to his "wipe" he puts a hand into his breast pocket and hauls out a liberal square of cambric. A woman under like circumstances sniffs, sniffs, and continues to sn'fif.

When a man sits down in a street car he waits till the genie of the bell punch and register stands in front of him, then he puts his thumb and forefinger in a tiny pocket in his overcoat and hauls out his ticket or his nickel, says a Chicago Journal writer. The woman begins to get her change ready when the conductor is at the other end of the car. She pulls her bag off her arm, draws it open, takes out her purse, pulls off her silk mitten, opens her purse, unclasps an inner compartment, takes out a nickel, puts it between her lips faugh! snaps the compartment, shuts the purse, opens her bag and puts away the purse, and pulls on the mitten again. And this is a fair sample of the way women hamper themselves all the little things and life is made up of them and then complain of the disad vantages of sex. There is nothing on earth to prevent any individual woman from en- joyinginnumerablepockets, loose sleeves, bifurcated underskirt, short hair, and all the other modern feminine improvements.

A Scripture Puzzle- A young Bible student was asked, how many boys are there in your class? 4Ho re plied: "If you multiply the number of Jacob's sons by the number of times which the Is raelites compassed Jerico, add to the product the number of measures of barley Boax gave to Ruth, divide this by the number of human's sons, subtract the number of each kind of clean beasts that went into the ark, multiply by the num ber of men that went to seek Elijah after he was taken to heaven, subtract from this Jo seph's age at the time he stood before l'haroah, and thenumer-of stones in David's slingbo when he killed Goliah, sub tract the number furlongs that Bethany was distant from Jerusalem, devide by the number of anchors out when Paul was shipwrecked, subtract the number of peonle paved in the ark, and the remainder willte the answer." The Catholic Bishops of the province of Baltimore met to-day at the residence of Cardinal Gibbous, to select three names to- be sent to Rome as their choice for the vacant Bishopric of Richmona, Va. The names selected will not be made public, but it is understood that the list is headed by the name of the Very Reverend A. For 1888, books were balanced, accounts settled stock inventories taken and most careful merchants, no doubt, calculated their profits and losses. The merchant who properly advertised his goods and wares during the year found his bal ance on the right side, while the dealer who did business after the manner of his ancestors," was lucky if he made both ends meet Some merchants take ad van tage of their opportunities: oth ers seem satisfied to merely exist. and pass away, and do net make a ripple in the stream of life; but others who observe the ebbing and flowing of the tide of fortune bring their barks safely to port, ladened with the reward of tact and skill. During the "busy season" the names ot many or the more prosperous merchants and tradesmen in this city are to be found in the advertising columns of the Citizen; but the merchants and tradesmen who advertise all the round are the men who are most apt to find work to do all the year round. Steady advertising unquestionably pays. Such is the experience of successful merchants. Cardinal Gibbons a Prisoner.

Cardinal Gibbons recently said to the prisoners of the Maryland penitentiary: "I was in a prison myself six years. They called it a college, it is true, but it was not much different from a prison. The discipline was as rigid, if not more so, than that at West Point. We had to go, whether we like it or not, fl the sound of a bell to our meals, to bed, everj'-where. The first night I was asked where I was going.

There was a solemn silence to my question. I only knew I was going to my little bed until the next morning. We had the same round lessonsr marching in procession and services, day in and daj out, all the six years. We wore black uniform, and had to obey a strict discipline.
