the end of last week the names of over 1500 families who had signed the pledges had been submitted' to the county office Most people Realize their responsibility in winning: this war and are very willing to pledge their greatest efforts to it Many people have" the mistaken idea that the Victory Borne and Garden 'program is merely a scheme to produce more garden products It is a pledge to forth our best in home productioh of food maintenance and improvement of health and maintaining our morale This is a pledge that every loyal citizen should he willing to sign and proud to display as these are things that every family can do to help in winning the war Every effort is being made to complete the job this week Those who have not had an opportunity to sign a pledge should contact the Victory leader in their neighborhood or call at the county office I The annual rural meeting of the Ashland Rotar Club was held on Monday evening when the group had the farmers of Cedar Hill as their the Americas on the South Mrs talk was most timely and was very much enjoyed The early diagnosis campaign being held this month is part of the Nebraska Tuberculosis year-round health program and Is financed through the annual sale of Christmas Seals It is an attempt to make the public conscious of tuberculosis and of the necessity of finding it in the early easily curable stages The first factor necessary for success In our defense program is good health Congested living cqn ditions worry and poor nutrition lead to poor health During April the Nebraska Tuberculosis Association is asking every individual to become acquainted with the facts concerning tuberculosis and help them in eradicating the disease from the state Tuberculosis alone Could easily cause the downfall of our whole defense set-up NOTICE There have been complaints about persons shooting at blackbirds along Salt Creek bank This practice must be stopped immediately or prosecution will be necessary Earl Fox Chief of Police Delmar Kem Yardley of Ashland enlisted last Thursday in the United States coast guard He left the same day for a training station He is the son of Mr and Mrs Omer Kem Yard-ley of Ashland Before Ellington Field Tex Saunders County began to show signs of the prospective boom last week as the weather turned warm and workmen began to get down to the serious business of completing the plant As one drives from Ashland north toward Mead the first indication of the increased population may be seen at Memphis where already about 10 trailers are camped More are expected to arrive shortly At Ithaca we were told that there were fifteen trailers camped and new ones coming nearly every day Across the road west of the plant near Mead one farmer has about twenty-five trailers parked on his farm and he had said that he will put the whole farm in and let the farm land lay idle if the demand warrants Mead of course has the greatest amount of activity Streets are lined throughout the day with cars Trailers are also becoming numerous there It ia anticipated that every available inch of space will be used for trailers and camps to bouse the incoming workers and their families The trailer camp at the fair grounds at Wahoo has about 35 trailers now We were told that the men come and go due to the fact that there is not enough work for all of the available men at this time The work has been speeded up a great deal with the arrival of spring weather The administration buildings are being erected on the north end near Mead and there are hundreds of workers on that one part of the plant alone It is anticipated that there are about 1900 workers employed at this time on the entire plant There are a few workers located at Ashland at present The big majority will prnbably arrive as soon as the towns in the north of the county have been filled to capacity The main reason however for Ashland not having more at this time may be laid to the fact that the road between Ashland and the plant -has Ulrich Gerdes who has been here for the past two years in charge of Julius blacksmith shop left Monday morning for Sau Diego Cal to work as a welder in the Navy HEED THIS
