COMES REAL ESTATE Roy Comes 792-4295 or 792-1679 Wayne Halbur 792-2866 63-I63-2IC QUESTION: What was the Blitzkrieg? * * * ANSWER: The Blitzkrieg was a rapid and direct form of wurfare devised by the German military command at the start of World War II. The chief characteristic of the Blitzkrieg was a sudden attack concentrated on a single objective. Mechanized and motorized divisions — Panzer units consisting of tanks and artillery on trucks — moved into an area with the support of the Air Force or dive bombers. When the enemy line was broken, the Panzer forces would move behind the enemy lines. This form of warfare made the trench tactics of World War I obsolete, it also showed the futility of fortifications, such as the Maginot Line. Early in World War II, the Blitzkrieg method was successful. Poland and France were quickly overrun. In 1 l )4l. when Germany attacked Russia there was a different story. Blitzkrieg units were allowed to go through the lines and then were surrounded and cut off from their supplies. Tank destroyer units were used and anti-tank weapons such as the bazpoka, a rocket gun, stopped the German Blitzkrieg. 7-13 (Andrea Sharer of St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada, wins a prize for this question. You can win $10-cash plus AP's handsome World Yearbook if your question, mailed on a postcard to Junior Editors in care of this newspaper is selected for a prize.)
