Street Repair Is at Weather's Mercy ABINGDON - Weather permitting, city workers may be able to repair a section of North Main Street which had to be torn up yesterday to make repairs to a plugged-up sewer. A city spokesman said that while a 5-foot section of the street between the bank and the drugstore had to be excavated, traffic was able to move normally during the repairs. INDEX KNOXVILLE - Knoxville High School has been approved by the North Central Assn. of High Schools' end Colleges for the 1972-73 year, school officials report. High schools must meet certain specified staff and curriculum standards in order to qualify for approval from North Central. Schools having major deviations from NGA requirements receive a warning rather than approved status, and (hose with minor deviations have the offending items called to their attention for correction. John King, KHS principal, has been officially informed by the NCA that no deviations have been charged against Knoxville High School; and the recognition and honor of "approved status" have been specified in a certificate of membership granted to the school. The 4K's Home Extension Unit met recently at the home of Mrs. Norman Hobbs. The meeting was "Outdoor Planters and Hanging Gardens," by Mrs. Robert Johnson. The minor lesson was given by Mrs. Lloyd Cochran on glues and adhesives. New officers were also elected. They are Mrs. Hobbs, second vice chairman; Mrs. Keith Reynolds, public information, and Mrs. Willard Simpson, treasurer. A Mother - Daughter Banquet will be held Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at the United Methodist Church. Legion Auxiliary At New Windsor Names Delegate NEW WINDSOR - Diana Warren, a junior at Winola High School, has been named George Norris American Legion Post 484 Auxiliary's delegate to Girls State this June at MacMurray College, Jacksonville She will receive $70 for registration and spending money Jamie Kay Anderson has been named alternate delegate, Mrs. Eugene Benson, the unit's child welfare chairman, reported at the organization's meeting here April 23. Mrs. Barbara Malm, Auxiliary District chairman, discussed VISTA and prisoners of war during her presentation to unit members. A pilgrimage to Fifer Cottage at Normal is planned for June 3, she announced. Senate Approves Runaway Shelter WASHINGTON (UPI) - A bill calling for construction of temporary shelters for youngsters who run away from home and to provide counseling for them has been approved by a Senate subcommittee. The juvenile delinquency sub committee Tuesday unanimously approved the measure, sponsored by its chairman, Sen. Birch Bayh, D-Ind. An identical bill passed the Senate late last year but was never acted upon by the House. The bill would authorize $10 million a year to finance houses to provide shelter, food and counseling for the estimated one million young Americans who run away from home every year.
