than 1400 tons of bombs on a target area of less than a square mile and another 1400 tons on an area close by The assault was aimed to break a deadlock of more than two months and drive the Germans from the Cassino fortress on the main 5th Army front Wave after wave of aircraft of every type roared relentlessly over the bastion town from dawn until past noon The tremendous attack had one on the stormy service vote issue today when the House adopted the bill which compromised differences between House and Senate and relayed it to President Roosevelt The House adopted the long-dis puted measure by a vote announced as 273 to 111 The President has not said whether he will sign this legislation which came out of weeks of lively dispute and conference committee action placing emphasis upon state controls over balloting by the armed forces in this general election year Mr Roosevelt who urged a straight federal ballot told a re cent press conference his attitude would be determined forthcoming elections but it is unlikely that Texans overseas will cast their ballots Grover Sellers State Attorney General said in El Paso today "Many servicemen still in this country have paid their poll taxes and can he said "If out of the state they can apply at any time for an absentee ballot "While it is theoretically possible for men overseas to vote I doubt that they will be able to do so without close co-operation by the Army and Mr Sellers pointed out that $1 of the State poll tax is required to be paid under the Constitution The Attorney General ruled last January that all soldiers and sailors and Marines now on active duty are legally entitled to vote except members of the regular standing Army and Navy but that they must have the same qualifications as other voters Mr Sellers' today to continue at war with Soviet Russia rejecting final terms of armistice according to reliable information available here tonight The vote is understood to have been 160 to 40 only two score leader in civic cultural and religious organizations and wife of Dr Branch Craige prominent physician died today at an El Paso hospital after a long illness She was 55 Funeral services will be held at 10 a tomorrow at St Church with the Rev Williams and Dr Wright rector officiating Burial will be in the family plot in Evergreen Cemetery under direction of Raster and Maxon Mrs Craige was born June 30 1888 in El Paso of prominent pioneer parents the late Mr and Mrs Ernst Kohlberg Her father founded the International Cigar Co in El Paso and the El Paso-made cigars became known throughout the United States and in many foreign countries Mr Kohlberg was the friend of many prominent mining engineers He built one of the first fine homes in El Paso on West Yandell boulevard and the Kohlberg home was the scene of many pioneer social events Mr Kohlberg came to this country from Germany Mrs Craige attended public schools in El Paso and attended Smith College from 1907 to 1910 when her college career was cut short by the death of her father She completed her college courses in 1932 at the College of Mines One of MTs Craige's main interests was the El Paso Public Library She was a Wendell Willkie the edge over Governor Thomas Dewey of New York on the basis of incomplete returns in New Hampshire With nearly three-fourths of the light vote cast in balloting counted delegates pledged or inclined toward Willkie had won or were leading for five of the state's 11 seats Jn the nominating convention Candidates pledged to Dewey without his blessing were leading for two seats while the other four in front were unpledged The only candidate pledged to Gen Douglas MacArthur was trailing Willkie backers won four of the seven delegates-at-large posts with one going to a Dewey candidate and the other two to candidates who neither pledged nor indicated a preference In addition an unpledged but pro-Willkie candidate was leading for one of the four seats in the two congressional districts with a delegate backing Dewey and two unpledged candidates in front for the other three posts Five candidates each for Will-cie and Dewey were among those trailing along with WASHINGTON March The War Labor Board today rejected American Federation of Labor demands for a higher wage ceiling In a three-way blow at organ-zed drive for liberalization of the wage stabilization formula the board refused to approve the AFL petition requesting President Roosevelt "to modify the Little Steel formula rejected a proposal to hold a public hearing on that petition and umed down a third suggestion that it conduct a general hearing on wage stabilization for the of providing Congress with information on the subject The AFL petition had been before the board since Feb 9 The AFL and CIO members stood together in supporting the three motions but received no support from ndustry and public members Meanwhile CIO President Philip Murray told a War Labor Board Steel Panel that division chief of the El Paso Division of Internal Revenue said that roughly one out of every three returns filed will be in the form of a "you owe note to Uncle Sam Washington income tax authorities today estimated that throughout the nation 1400000000 will be refunded to some 16000000 persons who paid too much in paycheck deductions or were inducted Into the armed forces Mr Fannin today said that he aided in filling out an income tax return for an Army doctor who will receive a $1000 refund One case was handled today by Mr Fannin whereby a man with nine children will receive a $600 refund
