Sunday, November 19, 1972 Del Rio Routs Eagle Pass To Gain Winning Season By CARL GUYS News-Herald Staff Claude Fest, head coach of the Del Rio Rams football squad, pulled the wool over the eyes of the Eagles Friday night here. After nine consecutive games in which he employed a Veer offense, his Rams routed Eagle Pass 48-21 with the use of the I formation. C. D.

Kirchner, in charge of the defensive secondary at Del Rio, aided the Eagle downfall by directing his defenders to six interceptions, a record for the Rams and also the most any team has stolen from Eagle Pass this year. In a wild and wooly confrontation, the Rams decision gave Del Rio a winning season marks with a 5-4-1 overall tab and a 3-2-1 District mark. The game was billed as a test of the Eagles' high powered offensive unit against the Rams' dandy defense and was unreeled just that way. Eagle Pass wasted no time to put the handwriting on the Scoreboard. It took Beco Maldonado and his fine receiver Jimmy Cone just 16 seconds and 71 yards to connect for the first score on the initial play from scrimmage after the opening kickoff.

This passing throwing-pass receiving pair was to connect twice more before the night was over for the visitors' three touchdowns but in between times Del Rio's grand larceny and surprise Use of the I formation outdid anything Eagles did by a margin of 27 points. The host Rams parlayed Mario Hernandez' four option TD's with his 74 yard pass and run thriller to tight end Bernie Herrera and Keith Stone's 65 yard dash with an intercepted aerial and Jeff Burr's crisscross scamper with a kick-off return for 42 points. The Rams picked up the fringe benefit bonus marks on Stephen Quinones' blast through the middle of the Eagle line and four of four placekicks by Keith Stone. Maldonado, a strong-armed passer, went the route and showed little regard for the light drizzle which fell for most of the contest. He connected to Cone for three TD's and picked up 253 yards on 13 completions of 36 tosses but lost his lustre and the decision on Del Rio's interceptions, the Rams specialty team's production and the Queen City's surprisingly effective use of their new I offense.

Maldonado and Cone brought the crowd to its feet on the first play of the game when the Eagle quarterback stepped back into the pocket and fired a bomb which Cone collected at the Del Rio 45 yard line and edged away from defender Gary Rodriguez in the final foot race to the end zone. The jubilant Eagle fans and the disappointed Del Rioans had hardly wiggled back down under their covers and rain gear when the moods changed. At the 5:07 mark in the period Mario Hernandez hit tight end Bemie Herrera with a pass from the Rams' 26 yard stripe on the visitor's 39. There Herrera outran the Eagle defenders to complete the 74 yard bomb. Stephen Quinones bulled over to give Del Rio the 8-7 edge and the fans in Orange wore non-sweetened grimaces while the home folks lit up grinning, Del Rio had more to shout about at the 3:23 mark when Keith Stone intercepted a Maldonado bomb and lugged it back 65 yards behind good blocking and then booted the PAT and a 15-7 Ram lead.

Ignoring the sky-jacking threat Maldonado hung in and passed to Cone from 38 yardsout for Eagle Pass' second TD to cut the host margin to 15-13. Eleven seconds later Jeff Burr brought the folks to their feet again with an 83 yard TD return of the ensuing kickoff. The Del Rioan fumbled the misty pigskin at his 17 but fielded it on a bounce at the 20 and picked up blockers to go all the way. Stone converted and the Rams led 22-13 as the 35-point, 12-minute initial period expired. Two minutes deep into the second quarter Hernandez faked the Eagles out of their feathers and optioned in from 30 yards out and at the 5:25 mark he did it again from 26 yards out.

Stone converted after the first one but a pass attempt after the second TD went awry but boosted the hosts to a 35-13 lead. Maldonado stuck to his air game and with 14 seconds remaining in the first half hit Cone for a 12-yard TD strike and then repeated for the two bonus marks to cut the host edge to 35-21, the halftime score. In the third period Andy Falls, one of Del Rio's defensive specialists, stole a Maldonado pass at the Del Rio 33 and dashed down to the Eagle 34. Hernandez hit Herrera for a 1st and goal at the Eagle 6 yard stripe and then faked to Quinones but kept and swept in standing up. Stone kicked the PAT to give the Rams their 42-21 lead.

Hernandez pulled off his option once more with 8:13 left in the contest from 13 yards out for the final TD. For the night Hernandez, a junior, ginned for 120 yards on nine carries including his four touchdowns. Jerry Fay lugged the ball 14 times for 135 yards despite a leg ailment which had him in and out of his final game three times. Quinones, another junior, had 40 yards on 10 trips besides playing defensively and David Simpson, a junior had 15 yards on three totes while senior signal caller Felix Garcia, probably the game's most dependable defensive player, had 35 yards on five options. Only Ronnie Acosta, a fine running back, caused any real concern for the Del Rio defense in racking up 112 yards on 20 carries before leaving the game in the third period with a leg injury.

Raymond Skiles of Comstock and Norman DeLeaon of Nueces Canyon hooked up in a scoring duel with dead even results splitting 46 points. Skiles emerged as the rebounding star with 25 against a pair of 6-4 host guards.

Nueces Canyon led 13-10 after the first period but the Comstock crew outshot them 12-7 to take a 22-20 edge into the halftime dressing room. The visitors from Val Verde County shot to a 33-31 lead after three periods and playing cautious and medium speed basketball because of foul threats got the 50-46 decision at the final minute mark. Both of Comstock's tall boys, Ray and Russ Skiles were under the four foul gun in the first half causing Coach Jim Harris to alter the game plans to protect his height. Jesse Stidham took up the slack for the winners with 10 points and Mike Castellano added 7, Juan Flores got 6, Roger Gillis contributed 3 and Russell Skiles settled for 2. For the host losers Bud Williams with 14 was the only other twin figure shooter.

Comstock went ahead by a lone point with 1V4 minutes left in the action and had important baskets from the Skiles brothers in the final half minute while De Leon hit twice for the home team. Ray Skiles had a pair of follow-up buckets after Panthers missed free throws in the crucial moments of the game and brother Russell hit one with 30 seconds on the clock to ice the contest. In the junior varsity action the Nueces Canyon crew turned the tables to take a 50-46 win. Leslie Kramer hit 24 points for the host B-team on nine field goals -and 6 of 11 charity conversions. Comstock had 13 points each from Jaime Garza and Raul Barragan.

Comstock led 13-10 at the first period pause before relinquishing the halftime lead to their host, 22-21. Nueces led 33-31 and staved off a visitor's drive to preserve the four-point verdict. Comstock visits Asherton Tuesday for varsity boys and varsity girls games and hosts Del Rio High boys and girls on Friday Nov. 24 in a triple header after the matinee Turkey Bowl grid game on Panther Field.
