authors which has been looked forward to wiih such keen anticipations scored a success last night before a crowded bocse There has seldom beeo a I more appreciative and enthusiastic audie ce gathered in the Academy of Music than was there last evening The appreciation ard enthusiasm was greatest at tbe last and was due entirely to the merits of tbe play itself aod the clever and intelligent work of the amateur actors and actresses who both surprised and delighted the audience The play was well staged tbe costumes were handsome and historically correct and the special pcenery was superior to almost any scenery that has ever been placed on tbe stage of the Academy of Musice The play was alro-ist entirely devoid of amateurish stiffness and the scenes followed one after another with that ease of movement and naturel sequence that takes tbe attention of the aodioce away from the stage business and covet titrates it on the human interest of tne play itself There was abundant scope for individual specialties and the manner in which the amateur artiss made the most of their opportuni ties kept the audience amused throughout the evening If a comparison were to be drawn a majority of the professional theatrical companies that visit this city would suffer thereby for the work of the amatures and the entire production of Captain Dick was im measurably superior to tbe average company that visits Sumter Messrs Bertram Willard and Smithdeal have scored a triumph for it was their skillful management th made la6t sue cess possible will be repeated this evening and as it is again under Sumter people are gratified that he is to continue in charge of the dispensary of justice When there is a case involviog the belligerent rights of two or more negro women on trial in Judge court there is more solid aod original amusement to he derived by spending an idle half hour in bis court than any ether place in tbe county Tbe Judge has the faculty of bringing out all of tbe factF aod if the witnesses and principals attempt to palm off a variegated and highly colored fictioo on the court be starts them at the siartiog place as often as neces snry to bring ont the truth The charge to prevaricating witnesses is strictly original and has to he heard to be appreciated A witness that will swear falsely after an admonition from Judge Wells ha3 no fear of the dungeon no appreciation of sent for and when he arrived Matthews was promptly jerked up and run in to tbe lock up The production of and by local amateur talent has not been abandoned although nothing has recently Deen said about it The various members of the cast are bard at work and tbe public performance will not be had until the play can be gives as it should be Tbe costumes have been ordered anti the drama will be staged as handsomely and correctly as it is when produced by professionals Tbe Stateburg road betweeo the city limits and Shot Pouch branch iB being improved in a substantial manner by tbe chain gang The road has been ditched graded and a sufficient quantity of clay put on it to give a bard roadway where formerly there was a heavy sand bed The chain gang has within the past year accomplished a great deal of work and the extent of the improvement wrought on the roads wherever the gang has spent aoytime is more apparent as time passes The chain gang is far ahead of tbe penitentiary 8s a means of disposing of the convicts for tbe chain gang dees not come into competition with free labor in any wy aad the work done by the chain gang will be of present and future benefit to the public at large With careful and intelligent administration of tbe chain gang and the pursuance of a systematic plan io tbe improvement of the roads of tbe county it is but a question of time when the roads of tbe county will te excellent when compared with wbat they now are in many sections Thursday when the chewing gum slot machine at the post office was opened remove the accumulated peonies a liberal proportion of the contents was made up not of pennies but of pieces of lead that had been hammered out to the exact sizs and thickness of a one cent coin The enterprising gum chewing youth who established an individual mint for the coinage of imitation lead pennies that would deceive the slot machine is undoubtedly a foxy fellow and has kept himself supplied with gum at a slight expenditure of time aod labor He has bad the additional satisfaction of kuowiog that be has cheated a machine out of sundry copper ceovs He is a bright youth and will make his mark in tbe world if he continues as be has begun All he has to do is to keep everlastingly at it and by gradually enlarging and extending bis operations bis success will be assured and be will have bis name known far beyond tbe small circle that now admires him for bis smartness and enterprise His mark will be made and he will be a successful counterfeiter a swindler and a rascal generally He will have to be very smart very foxy indeed to keep clear of Sing Sing a place where the government entertains those enterprising citizens who establish individual mints for tbe purpose of increasing the circulating medium Tbe boys who have made a practice of feeding the slot machine on lead pennies tobacco tags and other substitutes for the real article bearing the profile of thenoble red man on it toiler give themselves a iie-
