8 EYE Saturday June 7 1924 i RAZZING FAN IS CONDEMNED BY BAN JOHNSON Entries Indicate Charter Oak Will Be Great Trotting Test Illinois Is Only Team That Figures in Conference Track others to rely on Other stars among the eligibles are Sister Ruth which trotted in 2 :07 on a half mile track last year Bunter the Cleveland crack which has been second in 2:03 Hindustan which worked in 2:04 Kernel 2:05 the rough gaited Harvest 'Druien which looked a star at one time last season Great Britton 2:02 erratic but terrifically fast Suzanne Tobena Pluto Watts and June Marie the trio last named from the Mrs Harriman stable trained by Will Dickerson BY BRANDS FOUR teams figured in the Eastern Intercollegiate track and field meet as was pointed out in this column last week and they finished in the first four but only one team figures in the Western Conference meet in Chicago today That is Illinois In addition to having a number of individual stars Coach Gill has a well-balanced team that will pick up many minor points and it will get enough of them to win Second- place however is the doubt- ful position with Iowa or Michigan the most likely Missouri Wisconsin and Notre Dame appear to be the next best and will finish in about that order As the winners of the various events automatically qualify for the final Olympic tests in Boston next week the competition will be unusually keen Among the individuals who will wi or place high the following appear to be outstanding of man Richerson Missouri is doubtedly best weight' BY JORDAN THE razzing fan must go This is the dictum of Ban Johnson president of the American League He thinks the leader of ill-natured booing in the stands should be ejected This enthusiast not only begins to swing others to his way of thinking but is annoying to the fans who wish to sit peaceably and enjoy the game the league head maintains Philadelphia is the worst city in the league in this practice Mr Johnson says and believes the continual criticism of the players is largely respons-sible for the poor showing of the team He holds the fans are justified in a certain amount of criticism but he deplores the noisy ill-bred type who hurls insults from the stands believing he is immune from responsibility Pittsburgh and Cincinnati are two other cities that do not fail to give vocal display of their displeasure with actions Pittsburgh has not been in this class for several years but the disappointing showing this season has brought out a horde of the razzers a species peculiar to baseball but finding new recruits recently at boxing and wrestling matches CONTROL OF RING BOUTS IN KY UNDER FIRE PLAN TO HANDICAP POLO TEAMS BY THEIR MOUNTS BY TOM GAHAGAN THE $10000 Charter Oak oldest of the Grand Circuit classics for aged trotters has a list of 42 nominations for the renewal to be staged the week of Labor Day at the historic track at Hartford The fact that the event is to be raced in three divisions as it was in 1921 no doubt increased the number of nominations the stable presided over by Walter Cox i having no 'fewer than seven nominations while several I other stables have from two to four eligible to the classic The Charter Oak was first raced in 1883 when it was won by Director and since that time it has produced some of the great- est contests in the history of the har- ness turf The writer has covered the entire Grand Circuit for a period of nearly twenty years and during that time the race that stands out over all others as a great contest is the Charter Oak of 1916 when those two great stars St Frisco driven by Gears and Mable Trask piloted by Walter Cox battled for six heats for honors which finally went to the former In none of the six heats did more than a neck separate the pair at the finish and one heat was so close that the judges were unable to decide it being pronounced The list of Charter Oak eligibles this season is an imposing one Among the entries is Greyworthy which won the stakes in 1921 defeating the great little mare Periscope which is also again an eligible to the event Tom Murphy has named Etta Druien 2 :04 which trotted such a sensational race in the Kentucky futurity last fall as one of a quartet which also includes the good winners Trumpet and Hope Frisco In addition to Greyworthy Walter Cox also has The Laurel Hall Thompson Dillon Ilo Guy and in the Middle West and it would not be surprising if he won both the shot and discus Schild-haurer of Illinois seems to be his closest competitor in the shot and Schjoll of Minne-sota in the discus The latter will also give Oberst of Notre Dame a close rub in the javelin but Oberst figures best Hubbard of Michigan seems to have the broad jump at his mercy while it will be a fight between Brownell of Illinois and Brooker of Michigan in the pole vault Brownell will win if he has fully recovered from the injury that kept him out of most of the outdoor competition The high jump is a scrambled affair with anybody likely to win or two or three tie for first place like them in the following order Wright of Illinois Campbell of Minnesota McElven of Michigan Bransford of Missouri Woods of Butler Hageman of Washington and Pearce of Ohio Wesleyan Kinsey of Illinois and Crawford of Iowa figure best in the hurdles with Towler of Minnesota good enough to take advantage of any mishaps Doolittle of Butler looms as a star in the two-mile and ought to beat Micher of Illinois Phelps of Iowa and Poage of Missouri Anything is likely to happen in the dashes but Ayres and Evans of Illinois have shown enough to entitle them to being the favorites BY A STAFF CORRESPONDENT FRANKFORT KY June Boxing under the state board of athletic control in Kentucky moved along without incident until Soott Mays state inspector and examiner looked over' the records Then things began popping and former members of the board are busy denying reports and gossip concerning the conduct of boxing affairs Mays asserts that expenses were charged up when there any that money was spent in entertaining Governor Morrow that quarters were rented that were never used and that there was an unwarranted practice of advance payments of salaries Other discrepancies are charged Regarding the expenditure in entertaining the governor who appointed the members of the board under Frank Russell former chairman says had 'the money to spend and we spent The answer however evidently did not satisfy the state examiner BY A STAFF CORRESPONDENT NEW YORK June Handicapping polo horses as well as' or instead of the riders is being agitated in Eastern polo circles and may be brought before the United States Polo Association at its next annual meeting There is said to be considerable dissatisfaction with the present method of handicapping riders only especially among the spectators Some argue that the rider is only one-half the factor in deciding contests that the polo ponies are entitled to the other half of the consideration Others declare that handicapping the riders amount to the same thing for the highest-scoring player usually has the best mounts otherwise he be at the top of the ranking list That the ponies are an important factor however is evidenced by the fancy prices that aYe being paid for mounts The sale of the Argentine ponies considered among the best in the world gave the purchasers a big advantage especially those who secured the pick of the lot Many spectators are unable to understand the present method of handicapping and have no means of differentiating between the mounts They often are at loss to account for a team gaining the most points being defeated because its high-goal ranking The pony-handicapping plan would equalize the teams by their mounting and the goals scored would be the actual result AMERICAN OLYMPIC WRESTLING OUTFIT The American Olympic wrestling team will be made up from the following amateurs: Bryan Hines Northwestern Milton McWilliams Cornell 123 expressions hurled at the racing stewards Judge Charles Price is usually in the habit of leaving the stand and mingling with the club house crowd after each race but following the disqualification of Glide and the hurling of uncomplimentary remarks in the direction of the stand he refrained from leaving the pagoda during the remainder of the afternoon Regardless of the merits of the case the disqualification of Glide gave a black eye to the sport Many loyal boosters for racing have announced their intention of joining the reform movement in an effort to kill the sport Events this spring in Kentucky have demonstrated clearly that unless Matt Winn and Charles Price are removed from active control of the sport racing is doomed to destruction Disgraceful scenes attended the running of the Oaks on the closing day at Churchill Downs Disqualification of Glide brought forth a demonstration against the stewards that for a time threatened to develop into a riot The mere fact that the stand is far removed from the approach of the multitude most likely saved the officials from an attack from disgruntled spectators Sucli a as was handed the stewards and in which even the usually sedate club house contingent joined heartily has never before been witnessed on a race track in America Repeated cheers which lasted for fullv ten minutes followed the victory of Jockey Garner in the race following the Oaks when he won on Brunswick This ovation to the race rider was not for his victory but as a rebuke to the stewards Accepting the cheers of the crowd in the proper spirit Jockey Garner doffed his cap and waved his hands in recognition of the reception accorded him This action upon the part of Garner did not strike the fancy of the stewards and they handed him a suspension of ten days The suspension was presumably for rough riding in the stake race but no action had been taken against the rider until he offended the officials by responding to the cheering of the crowd turf
