Vol 9 No 24 EYE 5 EXTERMINATOR TO COMPETE IN BIG TIJUANA RACES Turf Plunger Actually Runs Into Versatile Lad Gives Promise Of Becoming Star Race Rider BY A STAFF CORRESPONDENT NEW YORK Sept Coffroth the racing impresario of the Tijuana Jockey Club is spreading the good news among the big owners here that the coming winter meeting at the California track will be the greatest in the history of Tijuana Practically all of the big stakes have been increased in value with the conflict with the Maryland and Kentucky contingents at this season of the year and this arrangement would offer another avenue or outlet for their activities But the general manager of the Ohio State Jockey Club is inclined to confine himself to the schedule of the Grand Circuit folks in the Fifth City of two meeting annually and it is doubtful at this time if Holman will deviate from his original plans However there is every reason to believe that he will lend his time and support to the proposed New Kensington meeting now that the opposition to racing has been obliterated there BY ADOLFH MATHIS UNDUE publicity has spoiled the career of many a promising race rider As soon as a youngster rides a few winners he is hailed as a coming star by the feature writers and nine times out of ten if the youngster is not a level-headed chap the complimentary press notices will do him more harm than good Every racing season sees the development of one more embryo stars and but a small per cent ever develop into first-class race riders Some last one or two seasons then they are through and seldom are heard from again 'iiiiiimiiimiiiiiiiiiiuiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiniiiimiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiimimiiiiimnmiiiiii MINISTER TRAINS 1 FOR BOXING BOUT 1 Kendallville Mo Sept 14 Rev i Earl Blackman pastor of the Church of Christ Kansas City i Mo and known among veterans of I the world war as the 1 is In active training here i for a boxing bout to be staged as 3 I the feature event of the celebra- i i tion at Excelsior Springs Mo I Sept 28 of the fifth anniversary I i of the opening of the Argonne i Forest offensive Rev Blackman I I served as chaplain with the i Thirty-fifth division and will swap i punches with Dr Jones of i Texas formerly a member of the I same outfit rjiiiiiiiiimiimiiiiiiiiiiumuiiiiiiiiiiiMiuimiiiiimiiiiMiiMiiiiimiiiiiiiiiii? BY KARRY FONSFORD DAME FORTUNE has bestowed befitting titles Upon turf celebrities for unique achievements and that of the Man on the is in order for Holman erstwhile ranger owner trainer architect and builder of the Delorimier Park King Edward Park Dorval and Kempton Park in Canada and the Chagrin Falls and Maple Heights tracks in Ohio who in the language of sport-dom has succeeded in accomplishing the mystical task of running a shoestring into a tannery lucky streak had its inception at Jefferson Park last winter when Best Pal came into his possession and in turn brought him Barracuda Boy From Home Banker Brown Mavourneen Jack Fairman Tender Seth Nedda Arendal and last but by no means least Jockey Johnny Pevic who is unquestionably one of the best in the Holman establishment Pevic who hails from the mining town of Carmichael Pa was the riding star at the recent Devonshire meeting winning 13 races to his nearest rivals Jockeys Fronk and Wallace who were credited with six winning mounts each Holman purchased contract from John Abrams at the spring meeting at Maple Heights on the advice and expert judgment of Booker who had seen Pevic do his stuff on the smaller tracks in Pennsylvania West Virginia and Ohio Rumor had it that Holman has had several flattering offers for his contract but is loathe to part with his services Perhaps nobody but Sam Holman himself and his immediate associates know the exact amount of winnings on the turf in the past year for while his color-bearers topped the list of winning owners at the recent devonshire meeting with $7350 to their credit his staggeringly sensational wagers have run his winnings into the five figures Holman lately has been overwhelmed with inquiries anent a fall meeting at Maple Heights as the horsemen are anxious to avoid the Riders like Earl Sande Mack Garner Albert Johnson Clarence Kummer and a few others who have been in the public limelight for a number of years past were not unduly influenced by flattery On the contrary they were sensible enough to realize that they were carrying a great public responsibility and felt they owed it to their employers and legion of followers to always try and keep themselves In the best of riding condition All of which leads to the subject of the latest find Fred Hastings the 18-year-old race rider from the Bronx in New York Fred has ridden about ten winners out of fifty mounts on the New York tracks 1 this summer yet the public is informed that he is a unique character with a picturesque career At thirteen he graduated from a grammar school in Queens Long Island After a year at Queens High he took and passed a Federal civil service examination and obtained a position in the Ordnance Dept at Island This sort of work was too tame for Freddy so he shipped as a call boy on the steamship At the close of the war he obtained a position on the steamship on which he made one trip to South America Later he became chief bell boy on the steamship where during his leisure moments he developed the idea of becoming a great jockey With the consent of his father who is in the plumbing business young Hastings contracted to serve five years in the employ of A Cochran For twenty-three months he was under the watchful eye of Trainer Carroll Shilling before the latter gave him a chance to ride in a race Hastings is making good and so far he has obeyed every instruction of his experienced teacher Shilling has taken a personal interest in the lad and hopes to stear him clear of the pitfalls that await his young star At present Freddy is described as a home boy who does not run around at night rarely goes to a show but instead spends his evenings reading good books TRIO OF $10000 STAKE EVENTS AT THE GRAW BY A STAFF CORRESPONDENT Havre de grace md sept 14 Brilliant fields are assured for the three $10000 stakes namely the Eastern Shore for two-year-olds the Potomac for three-year-olds and the Havre De Grace for three-year-olds and up which will feature the ten-day autumn meeting here starting Sept 19 The Whitney-Greentree stars Enchantment Flagstaff Chickvale and others are being trained for the Potomac Enchantment and Chickvale seem to tavor the local track as it will be recalled Chickvale defeated Exterminator here last April in the Old Dominion handicap while Enchantment won his first two starts as a two-year-old here in the spring of 1922 Bunting will be missed in Maryland but there is hope that Ned-na the fast four-year-old filly will carry the Greentree colors in the Havre De Grace Handicap The Eastern Shore Handicap attracted many of the crack juveniles of the big racing stables MUST PROVE HIS VICTORY IN CUP WAS NO FLUKE BY A STAFF CORRBSFONDBNT NEW YORK Sept Pretentious plans have been mapped oat for the Salubria My Own Since his victory in the Saratoga Cup in which Bunting fell hopelessly lame his owners have entered him in the National Trial Sweepstakes the Kentucky special Latonia Championship Washington Handicap and other big stakes to be run during the coming fall in Kentucky and Maryland Just now he is receiving some clever press-agenting but the real test will come in the National Trial tomorrow Whether the victory in the Saratoga Cup was well earned in view of break down will then be determined Some of the skeptical ones would like to see Untidy Rialto Cherry Pie Vigil Wilderness and Dot hook up with him in the National Trial tt AQUEDUCT STAKE DATES There are thirteen special features provided for this meeting the order of running of these stakes being as follows Coffroth Handicap of $40000 as the headliner Last Coffroth had a net value of $36000 but next renewal will be worth close to $50000 rich offerings are too big to be ignored and there is little doubt but there will be more eastern stables racing there than ever before Several of the older stars like Exterminator who has been out of racing all spring and summer are expected to make the trip to Southern California next winter Kilmei planned to send west Iasi winter but a break down of the gelding at Pimlico caused his plans to gc awry IS SAYS PATTERSON Bayview Handicap Sept 1923 season I am sure that he will go a distance of ground and there is a question about the ability of Happy Thoughts to negotiate a route" BY' A STAFF CORRESPONDENT Lexington ky Sept Although Happy Thoughts recently purchased by the Xalapa Farm Stable for a reported price of $75000 is considered the queen of the two-year-olds both east and west there is one Kentuckian who considers it highly probable that her measure will be taken before the fall session of racing comes to an end So astute a turfman as Col Phil Chinn considers that Sarazen is the best juvenile shown this year and is not averse to risking a few dollars on the chances of the chestnut gelding trimming the daughter of Sir Martin Much disappointment was felt by Col Chinn when Sarazen was withdrawn from the final event at Belmont recently Charles Patterson who formerly trained Sarazen also HORSE RACING MUST CEASE servation with the object in view of purging out known evils so it will the common consent of the governed major league teams using poor teams in exhibition games with minor leagues will be threshed out when the major leagues meet in joint session in December is my belief that any major league club that arranges an exhibition game with a minor league team should present its full strength and treat the contest seriously instead of as a joke It does baseball no good to have a big league team beaten by a one-sided score by a minor league team just because the big leaguers indulged in a lot of horse play or took advantage of the occasion to try a bunch of amateurs or unknown The stand of the Toronto
