Wickard Opposes Parity loans Declares It Might Interfere With Production Aims WASHINGTON Secretary Wickard declared Wednesday that he.

would oppose proposed legislation authorizing 100 per cent parity loans for basic farm crops because he fears it would interfere with the Agriculture Department's efforts to secure a record production of food next year. Government loans at 85 per cent of parity are authorized for this'year's production of the basic crops, which are cotton, corn, wheat, rice and tobacco. The rate would be increased in future years parity under -a bill approved by the House Agriculture Committee. "The whole 'food-for-defense' program is based upon the 85 per cent loan level," Wickard 'said in an interview. "A change in that rate would upset the program because of its effect upon corn prices." Under the food program, farmers are being urged to produce all they can of such products as pork, beef cattle, milk, poultry, eggs, and some fruits and vegetables, so that abundant supplies might be available not only for Americans but for Britons and others resisting aggression.

Wickard explained that corn was the "fundamental" crop in the It is the most important feed for hogs, cattle, and chickens. Farmers can be expected to feed corn abundantly only when there is a margin of profit, he said, between the price of feed and the price of livestock, dairy and poultry products.
