10-DEL RIO (TEXAS) NEWS-HERALD. Thursday, November 2. 1072 Jeff Burr Joins Rams By CARL GUYS Comstock Letter Day For 11 months out of each year the Comstock Lions purr along at various endeavors designed to keep their personal bodies and souls intact. Then during the 12th month these Southwest Texas Lions really roar. The big rumble is usually over their Turkey Shoot, the club's only annual fund raising project.

This year, however, our Comstock country cousins have shelved the shooting feature and in its stead the Lions have come up with another idea which will involve a lot more area people. The project is tabbed Comstock's Sports Extravaganza and includes an interesting football game the only one of the season on Panther Field; a tripleheader basketball feature; and, naturally a big folk feed ala Mexican style supper. Lion prexy Warren McCarson and Polo Lugo collaborated to contact a host of ex-Comstock athletes to participate in the grid game. To date 19 former Panthers have agreed to return to their alma mater's campus and play in the Lions' benefit game. Jim Harris, head basketball coach at Pantherland, said, "We'll wait until we see how many players we havyon hand and then divided them up into our Green 16 squads for either a 6-man or 8-man contest at 2:30 the afternoon of Nov.

24. Harris, McCarson and R.W. Milligan, the Pantherette cage coach, will donate their time officiating the contest. SPECIAL GUARD' Tom Caldwell, offensive right tackle for the After the ball game which will be produced by the Del Rio Rams, will use the headgear on the left for Friday's game Lions for a dollar per adult and half that figure for here against Fox Tech. Caldwell suffered a double fracture of his students that same 'iriBustrious organizations will jaw in a freak collision on the practice field Oct.

Coach Claude Fest obtained This is to be another one of those real country cook-ins the special face guard shown attached to Caldwell's headgear as where the patrons come away happily patting their compared to the regular face masks shown on the right. (News-Herald Photo) tummies andsmacking their lips. The Climax Just about when you'd think an afternoon of entertaining football wherein you've seen familiar faces from yesteryear in action and a man-size Mexican supper should fill one day's bill Comstock will have a full night of basketball including both boys and girls games. First off the Comstock and Del Rio High JVs will tangle around 5:30 and have a varsity contest between the host school and the DRHS girls in between the final feature which pits our Class AAAA Rams against the Class Panthers.

Coach Harris and his cohorts on the Lions' roster at Comstock exierrdithe invitation to all Del Rio-Laughlin AFB and area sports fans to come spend a day in Panther Country for the first real sports project of the year. Tickets for the matinee grid action should soon be toming to Del Rio for advance sales. More about that later. Rams Chosen San Antonio and Uvalde prognosticates have faith in The Del Rio Rams this week. Those grid game pickers have all put their faith in Del Rio to win over Fox Tech's Buffaloes here Friday in the big HOmecoming shindig.

This stripper goes along with the outside media thinking too but with reservations. Our big "IP's" are on the quality of the action to be turned in by the alternate Rams who are moving into first line positions because of a seige of ailments on Coach Claude Fests' crew. The snake-bit Del Rio High School Rams received another setback Wednesday when Jeff Burr, one of the head candidates scheduled to replace the collarbone fractured Leon Best here Friday night against Fox Tech, hurt his back during Wednesday's final workout. Head coach Claude Fest hurriedly named Gus Ramirez to the probable starting assignment with Andy Falls of the Ram defensive secondary to play the backup offensive role. Fest also named Gary Rodriguez to the starting left naif slot vacated by a pulled ligament to Jerry Fay, the District third most potent point producer, Rodriguez ana Ramirez suddenly become saddled with starting responsibility, remarked the head coach who added, "Both of these boys run well and if the backfleld does not suffer any timing or blacking lapses we still could be all right against Fox Tech.

Burr, who came up with a slight back injury, will be limited to action in the defensive secondary although we had counted upon his quick speed for offensive duty." For the Homecoming Game the Rams will have another change in the offensive unit with Jeff Kemp starting at the tight end spot, Fest said. Kemp has shown ability to make some good moves and has fine hands. He may help us Comstock Cogers Travel Saturday Jim Harris, head basketball coach for the Comstock High School Panthers, is this Southwest Texas area's mentor on the go. While most of the Lone Star State is fervently involved in district football campaigns, Coach Harris and his thinclads have already put BOWLING ROUNDUP on many miles scrimmaging on the hardwood court. The Panthers visited Tilden to practice against the McMullen County basketball squad and despite the 48-38 loss Comstock goes back over the 400-mile round trip to try again Saturday.

Woodpeckers Tap Out Top Tab Tech coach Juan Rivera told me that his are "injury-free and to take a victory Fox vt KZZVC: CL L-lwIl back to San Antonio. Homecoming or not, Friday. This puts the bee on the backup personnel in Ram uniforms. If the bees buzz out a good game pattern and don't fall prey to over-eager performances where fumblitis or malfunctions at the handoff junctions set in, it will be the Rams all the way and win No. 3 in District 32-AAAA for Del Rio.

The San Antonio sheet we scanned today also gives the nod to Edgewood over the league-leading Kennedy Rockets. We go along with that predictions mainly on the strength of the Red Raiders' scoring punch. Neighbors To Win While we are at it we'll add our two cents worth by picking the Brackettville Tigers over the Rocksprings Angoras and the Uvalde Coyotes over the Kerrville Tivy Antlers. Straight-8's should go on the Tiger and Coyote grid report cards come Friday night. Uvalde, like Del Rio this week, has Homecoming and the Votes will have that added incentive to bag one for the former students and ex-players who are to be on hand to help sell-out the Honey Bowl.

The Tigers have had their Homecoming celebration already but should have another happy home coming from Rocksprings, site of Friday's game. Our staffer, Buddy Price, will cover tha one and the ex-Sweetwater cndder will tell you all about it in Sunday's News-Herald complete with aciton photos of the important district 30-A contest. Celebrations Early Fans, and folks who desire to take in the Homecoming ceremonies complete with coronation are advised to get to the DRHS stadium earlier than as is the custom. The game is slated for a 7:30 kickoff and the ceremonies will take place before the game and NOT at the halftime as one would surmise. About 7 p.m.

would get you there in time to see the football warmup tail off and the Homecoming tinsel take over. The boys will go back into their dressing rooms 20 minutes before the kickoff time and during this interim the festivities of the queen and her court will be produced. A lot of timber fell at Highland Hills Lanes in the week's Early Bird bowling session Wednesday morning. The Woodpeckers pounded out a 4-0 shutout over the Flamingoes and climbed into sole leadership of the 10-team loop with 24-8 won-lost credentials. The runnerup Ravens at 23-9 dropped down after a four-point split with the third place Red Birds (19-13).

The Crackles swept the We Four crew for all four marks and moved into a fourth place deadlock with the Paraqueets who also shared four marks with the Chickadees who dwell at the bottom of the loop at 10-22. In the other action the eighth place Rollers shutout the seventh place Canaries 4-0. Individually Becky Willard had 198-502 for top solo and series marks. Julia Brazil's 188 and Liz Sadler's 175 was second and third in the solo events while Mae Patterson's 478 and Lily Paterson's 468 took runnerup and third place in the 3-garne series marks. Atlanta Braves Trade Millan NEW YORK (AP) The Nevi YorkMets, expected to be extra active in baseball's winter trade market, have made their first move, a four-player swap with the Atlanta Braves.

The Mets shipped right-handed pitchers Gary Gentry and Danny Frisella to the Braves in exchange for second baseman Felix Millan and George Stone. Coach Harris, in his third season at the Comstock school, said in a post-game release after the 10-point toss, "This may sound ndiculous but you can sav I' think the score of our second sessiom at Tilden with McMullen will reach the 70's or 80's." The former South Bend, mentor said the Panthers had the "best week's workout of any squad in my tenure here" the week following the first contes. He also said that Halloween forced him to give up the ghost Tuesday since the Panther gym was used as the site for the school's carnival but added the full scale workouts resumed Wednesday and will continue through Friday. The Panthers, 12-strong, and their galavanting coach will leave Comstock at 2:30 p.m. Saturday for the long trip to play the single varsity game at.

7:30 and return to their home base sometime after midnight that night. Harris named Andy Duncan and Mike Castellano to the starting quintet as the guards, Ray and Russ Skiles as the post men and Jesse Stidham at the wing slot. Harris coaches a twin low-post with flappable wing and dual guard system at Comstock and has extra posts in Harold Tolliver and Ramon Barragan, added wings in Robert Barragan and Randy Duncan and spare guards in Roger Gillis and Juan Flores and little Johnny Zuberbueler. accelerate our passing game. Also we plan to open with Victor Luna, at a guard post but don't know how long his ailing knee will hold up." With reference to Wednesday's workout Coach Fest said "it was pretty good" but did not elaborate nor did he have to speak with any discernible degree super-satisfaction.

He did state that "We are thin as the devil this week. It wfll take a good effort on the parts of the regular starters and the new starters to get the job done against Fox Tech. The Buffaloes are quick and strong but we can contain them. Scoring could be our problem since both Fay and Best aren't available. David Simpson at fullback and Mario Hernandez at quarterback are the only two of the regular backfleld ready." Fest also named Rusty Chalk as the starting center on offense and said the giant junior will team with George McFarlen, Mike Orr and Stephen Quinones to make up the regular front foursome.

Mike Scott, Keith Stone and Bernie Herrera have the linebacking responsibility with a secondary defensive unit of Ruben Cardenas. Andy Falls and Jeff Burr. "If Burr's back acts up," remarked Fest, "we will call on Cat Garcia or Mike Sadler for defensive action." Fest's sole consolation was with his kicking and punting crew, Keith Stone and Mike Sadler who can do both chores well. The aerial game was judged as a shade brighter after the week's work on it and the kickoff and punt attack and return teams appeared to have their assignments down. The offense remains as the big question for the Homecoming Game feature which is being counted on to attract the largest crowd of the season to the community high school stadium for the 7:30 p.m.

kickoff Friday. Fest, who also is the athletic director for the school district, pointed out that UIL rules for Class AAAA schools call for a time-scheduled halftime program and re-game ceremonies.
