Jack Hartman, Wildcat coach whose charges helped Nebraska by knocking off the Tigers and provided themselves with some life in the race, conceded, "We had to get this one. "It is the school's ruling that any student of athletics or forensic may not be allowed to participate in a contest if on that day he or she has been absent from school," explained Bob Kelly, assistant sports editor of the Salina Journal. Kelly went on to explain that the purpose of the rule is to discourage 'one-day sick-bed layoffs' with lone intent of competing in a contest that night. Salina Central Coach Carroll Cyr later concurred with Kelly's statement and admitted he fully supported the school's stand on the matter.

The suffering is only a one-game absence. Both saw action last night against Wichita Samuel and McClanthan both may be succeeded. Samuel can't be replaced. His 54-point single-handed bombing of Garden City in the recent McPherson Invitational Tournament proves that. AROUND THE BEND Lovable Carl Soden, who classifies UTM as tops in "second-guessing" officials can digest the foregoing tastey morsel as he reclines this afternoon with The Tribune on his lap.

Call it vanity, term it conceit, but UTM strongly believes he is qualified to pass judgement on officiating merits having Page 6 DAILY TRIBUNE Others to qualify were Darrell Claphan, 105; Glen Dewey, 119; Curtis Robinson, 134; and Kelly McCulley, 145. Claphan, Dewey and McCulley captured third places while Robinson was awarded fourth in his division. The top four finishers qualify for the regionals. Great Bend finished fifth in team standings with 47 points. Wichita Heights barely nosed out Newton for top honors with 73Vi points to 73.

Others, in order of finish, were Garden City, 57Vfe, Hutchinson 55, Great Bend 47, Wichita North 40W, Hays 37, Dodge City 32, Liberal 27Vfe, McPherson 20 and Salina South 12. Fate struck a crippling blow to the Panthers' chances of ft team title when Evan Keenan, 98-po under and normally a sure point-getter, was left behind to continue his bout with the flu. In addition, Kee nan's backup replacement, Brad Troutman, also was felled by the illness. Solons May Share Slate ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) Minnesota Twins owner Calvin Griffith said Saturday his professional baseball team may share a 25-to-30 game chunk of its schedule with Orlando.

"We might be interested in playing 25 to 30 games a season down here like Cleveland is talking about doing with New Orleans," Griffith said. The Orlando Sentinel, in its Sunday editions, reported a deal may be contingent on whether Orlando builds a domed stadium. Blue Dragons Blast Garden HUTCHINSON, Kan. The Hutchinson Blue Dragons sharpened up for their Tuesday night showdown with host Barton County by blasting Garden City in a Jayhawk Junior College Conference western division basketball game Saturday night, 71-59. Garden City's Dana Albright paced all scorers with 23 points while Richard Morsden sparked the Blue Dragons' attack with 22.

Gomez Retains Feather Title MARACAY, Venezuela (AP) Antonio Gomez of Venezuela retained the World Boxing Association version of the feather-' weight title Friday night by knocking out Mexico's Raul Martinez Mora in the seventh round of a scheduled 15-round bout. Gomez knocked the Mexican down twice in the third round and then dropped him for the full count at 1:34 of the seventh, reversing a disputed decision he dropped to Mora in Mexico last Nov. 2. Back on Top In Hawaii Honolulu (AP Bob Mur- phy calmly tapped in a two-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole Sat-urday to regain sole possession of first place in the third round of the $200,000 Hawaiian Open Golf Tournament.

The chunky, red-haired Murphy was in a tie with Rod Fun-seth at 10 under par when the national television coverage broke away as Murphy was playing the 18th. He chipped up to within two feet on the par-five hole and sank the putt for a 70 that left him alone in front at 205. Funseth, a 39-year-old tour veteran, posted a four-under-par 68 on the Waialae Country Club course and was alone in second at 206. Masters' champion Charles Goody headed a quartet at 207, nine under par and just two strokes back of the pace-setting Murphy. Coody had a 69 and was tied with New Zealand's John Lister, 68, and Lee Elder and Curtis Sifford, each with a 69.

Jim Jamieson and Marty Fleckman, attempting to play his way out of a protracted slump, followed at 208. Fleck-man had a 71 and Jamieson a 70. Lee Trevino remained in contention with a 71 for 209, four strokes back. Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus failed to make a move, however, and appeared to be out of the running for the $40,000 first prize. Nicklaus had to rally to salvage a 73-214 while Palmer posted a 70 for 213.

Murphy, who has led or shared the lead at the end of every round, said the shifting winds that swept the course may have helped him. "I consider myself a good wind player," he explained. "When I see that it's a windy day, I figure it's to my advantage." Murphy led by one stroke at the start of the day's play. First one and then another of the closely bunched field made a run at him. When he missed the green and bogeyed the 12th hole, he dropped back into a tie at nine under par with a logjam of seven other players.

At the precise moment, Sifford, Jamieson, Funseth, Elder, Lister, Fred Marti and Lou Graham all were nine under at various spots on the course. Triple-bogey disaster hit Marti and Graham, but the others hung on. Marti knocked himself out of contention with a seven on the 16th hole. He just moved the ball with a poor chip for his third shot and dumped the next into a yawning trap. Tigers Nip Omaha OMAHA, Neb.

De Vicenzo's 68 followed rounds of 65 and 66.

Another subpar round Sunday would enable him to break the tournament mark set by Bert Weaver in 1968. Little-known John Cook of Minneapolis shot a 69 Saturday for a 203 total, four strokes behind de Vicenzo and two in front of England's Peter Townsend and Sutralia's David Graham. Townsend had a 69 Saturday while Graham shot a 67. Three more Americans-Gene Borek, Hugh Royer and Bert Greene were tied for fifth at 206, followed by American Herb Hooper and Argentina's Rogelio Gonzalez at 207. MANHATTAN, Kan.
