Do you really think that getting out around 8 am on one of the busi est highway cross sections through town makes for the best conditions for excellent re sur facing? Well one point And another one is never supposed to do any kind of con structive criticism without hav ing some sort of answer The answer might come in the form of other questions? What hap pened to the old car pools? Of course one dates one's self when one remembers either walking or bicycling to school and one must never do that But if children have to be taken to and from school it make sens for the schools to have busses for the city learners as well as those that come in from out of the city? And the busses be these new low vamped kind that hog most of the road and all of the vision? Just think what peace could descend on parents whose prime duties these days seem to be that of a chauffeur! Mom and Dad both could over a second cup of coffee after the school rush was out of the way Staff Sgt and Mrs James and their three children Mike Cliff and Steve arrived in Charles ton on Tuesday via jet flight from Ramstcin Air orce Base in Ramstein Germany where they had been stationed for 25 months They arc visiting her parents Mr and Mrs Robert Ham of Tim monsville and his parents Mr and Mrs O'Quin in Walterboro After spending his 30 days leave Staff Sgt O'Quin and family will be stationed at Dyess Air orce Base at Abilene Texas or booklet To Have A Lovely send 50 cents to Abby Box 3365 Bever ly Hills Calif Miss Angeline Hopkins a stu dent at the school of nursing of the Medical College of South Carolina in Charleston spent the weekend here with her parents Mr Mrs Lester Hopkins Mrs David McLean gave an in formative program on and to members of the Green Acres Garden club at its September meeting She a introduced by program chairman Mrs Brye Mrs McLean told how we realize the value of our birds when we consider the many insects de stroyed by them each year With this value in mind she gave several suggestions to help attract them into yards The three re quirements of birds are food shel ter and water The preference of food for different kinds of birds was discussed to include how to give the best protection to them in building bird houses and supply ing water for both drinking and bathing Mrs Wyman Haigler assisted the speaker in showing picture slides of birds found in this area Mrs Mc Lean concluded the program by saying that insecticides polluted water and the cutting down of forests is destroying many birds each year Club members were urged to use their influence in pro tecting birds The club president Mrs Stricklin thanked Mrs red be made in a a or what? Please don't print my name or my HEAD will be on display with the rest of the house DEAR Tell your mother in law that you mind being an attraction on her sight seeing tour but you like surprise visits Ask her please to give you at least three hours notice The September meeting Wisteria Garden Club featured a talk on Camellias by Rogers The meeting was held at the home of Mrs Bellin ger with Mrs Brunson Sirs Holt Jr and Mrs Wor rell as hostesses 1 Mrs Darby Cusack president called the meeting to order New year books were distributed by Mrs Pete Kafer The Eastern Car olina air was announced for Oct 7 12 The club's arrangement is to be a Christmas one using a Madonna The club voted to continue work on the A grounds as its project for the year The lower School was announced for Oct 31 Nov 1 and 2 and all Camellia show Nov 16 and 17 All members were urged to participate Refreshments were served by the hostesses at the conclusion of business DEAR ABBY: What has become of manners? I am employed at one of the most exclusive stores in this city We carry the finest china crystal and silver and cater to the best people You would be shock ed at the number of so called bred who apparently have never heard of acknowledg ing a wedding gift I am the per son who checks to assure the send er that her gift was received by the bride Please print this I have frequently been tempted to tele phone the bride's mother to tell her please to put the spurs into her lazv daughter Thank you DISGUSTED DEAR ABBY: A neighbor asked me to write for her as she write English Here is her prob lem: Her husband is 76 and re tired She is 62 Last May they at tended a convention Her hus band is such a playboy she had to shift for herself while he ran after girls young enough to be his daughters Her question is should she go to another one of these con ventions scheduled in October? She doesn't know whether to go and be hurt again or to stay home and let him go alone and have the good time he doesn't deserve A RIEND DEAR RIEND: A 76 year oId playboy is only running for the exercise Tell your friend to go along be more miserable at home wondering what the old coot was up to DEAR ABBY: You always say that a wife should not convict her husband on circumstantial evi dence Just because she happens to find a hairpin in his pocket or lipstick on his handkerchief you say is no reason to lose trust in him Well I sure disagree with you 100 per cent Where smoke fire My old man swore on his grave that he was true to me I found out later that he was lying TRUSTING OOL DEAR TRUSTING: You win a few lose a few I still say They 'could plan their day just chit chat in an atmosphere of quiet day at the office would start off without the jangled nerves day could start in a dress rather than a house coat time break stead file to the nearest school to pick up said child! Mom would be home to greet her little ones with a smile and an open ear to all that had hap pened in their young lives at school that day Dad could close his important business deal with out having to be a clock watcher when 3 comes And when his own time clock shows it time to return you think everyone would be happi er at That awful after noon would be alleviat ed at least partially so the roads would not have the wear and tear been receiv ing the highway department could work on some of the less used roads the ones that have been overlooked for lack of time and all cars would run the way Madison Avenue copy writers say they should! One more note of course if the children walked or rode their bicycles there would be less need for a program As a matter of fact the same thing might apply to Mom and Dad they could get on their feet or on their well ridc bicycles too And save the family bus for an out of town hol iday! Parking facilities would no longer be a problem the tax on gasoline would be much easier to take: and law makers might find out that a pretty hardy people! That we need the cuddling they think we do!
