close to pushing the accelerator through the floorboard of his ord Wednesday at Darlington Raceway as he turned in a four lap speed of 133648 mph to win the pole position for Southern 500 and established a new track record Lorenzen leaped into the qualify ing fray after Junior Johnson had already bested the 133 mark with a 133414 mph and after several other drivers had bested the exist ing record of 130246 set last year by ireball Roberts Lorenzen had been the heavy favorite to takethe 1963 pole especially after posting a 132 plus time in practice runs Roberts pole winner for the past four years ran some fast practice rounds Wednesday but chose not to enter the competition which set the first eight places for race Johnson won the number two spot driving a 1963 Chevrolet and was the only other driver to best the 133 mph mark A surprise to many considering his change of cars just a week ago was Mighty Joe Weatherly who won the third position in his '63 Mercury with a sped of 132 770 Weatherly winner of the Rebel 300 last May was followed by Bobby Johns Marvin Panch Nelson Stacy Darrel and Buck Baker our other drivers record in attempting but failed to make the top eight positions They were Richard Pet ty Billy Wade Tiny Lund and Jim Paschal Wade a rookie this year was the first to set a new record hit ting 131169 in a 1963 Dodge in the j'irst time trail of the afternoon The Airlift Race following the trials pitted the eight qualifiers in a four lap heat which Lorenzen also took with a speed of 132 flat The other drivers finished in the exact order in which they qualifi ed Lorenzen and Johnson battled for the lead from the flag through the second turn with their fenders pressing each other in an attempt to force each other back Lorenzen finally gained the front position as they came out of the second turn but had to run fast all the way to prevent being overtaken by Johnson The second eight positions will be filled in trials Thursday and an other eight on riday The remain der of the positions will be filled on Saturday A' total of 32 cars have reported in thus far with the deadline less than 48 hours away A field of 44 is expected to be ready
