Spring to dictate his dispatch announcing tbe victory Gen ShoepfT pickets had had a skirmish on the IO1I1 with the advance of Gen Zolli-coffer and had been driven in with a loss ot ten men Since that time the rebel General has been held in check by SboopfT force originally consisting of the 12th Kentucky 17th Ohio 35th Ohio and recently strongly reinforced In some respects Zdlicofter had great advantages for field fighting Our soldiers at Somerset complained that they had not a single company of cavalry to resist the ouslaughter 1800 cavalry The Federal forces in the fight did not exceed 3000 Geu ShoepfF was unable to bringhis command up to bear any part in Ihe fight on account of the bad condition ot the roads and the precautions taken by Zollicoffer to guard all the avenues to his camp by abattis or irregular obstructions of fallen trees and rocks Bnt for this he would have caught the rebels in their rear prevent their retreat to their in-trenrhments and compelled the surrender of the whole force The rebel retreat was so complete a panic that they did not attempt to destroy anything for they were fearful of buruing their stores lest ihe blaze ol conflagration should light the Federal artillery and invited a storm of the iron hail they had so newly learned to dread To the credit of Gen troops it should be added that some of the regiments most gallant and daring in the fight advanced in a forced march of twenty-five miles over horrible roads to reach Gen camp which until ten days since hud been at Columbia Adair county about forty miles from tbe Tennessee line and almost directly east of Bowling Green illicoff being thus placed almost directly between Columbia and London at both of which places Federal forces were stationed From thi3 camp Gen Thomas had moved forward by the Jamestown read with the apparent intention of getting into the rear of Zollicoffer cutting off his retreat and bogging his force llicoffer ascertaining the nature of the movement and seeing that he must abandon his position or be surrounded holdly determined to attack his enemies in detail and suddenly marched to meet Thomas The rebel mounted force was represente I as very welt armed and equipped The rebel infartry was armed with Enfield rifles and serviceable smooth bore United States muskets bnt some irregular bodies were armed with shot-guns and such other weapons as they could pick up For some time past the trap has been pre paring for Zollicoffer It was arranged that Gen Thomas should leave Jamestown and Gen Shoejff advance from near Somerset thus hemming Zollicoffer in from the west and north Some secession spy carried the intelligence ol movements to the rebel camp and Zollicofler making a forced inarch on Saturday afternoon reached Thom encampment and attacked it early on Sun-lay morning At seven o'clock Sunday morning the enemy drove in the pickets of the 10th Indiana Gol Mason stationed at the forks of the rode eight mi les from Somerset The 10th were drawn up in line of battle and moved into the road where they were met by the enemy six thousand strong who instantly opened upon them Gen Thomas immedately ordered up the 9th Ohio Col Robf McCook 2d Minnesota Col Van Oleve and 4th Kentucky Col Fry to the support of the IO1I1 Indiana the latter with cool bravery bolding the enemy in check nearly hall an hour before beii rein-forced She 1st and 2d Tennessee regiments were ordered np 011 the right wing for the purpose of oulflanking the enemy and Whetmore's Ohio batteries in tha meantime shelling tbe enemy in the woods After being engaged nearly two hours the 9th Ohio 21 Minnesota and 4th Kentucky made a magnificent and desperata bayonet charge upon the enemy and drove them from the woods completely routing and pursuing them to their iatrenchments At tneheat of the engagement Captain Kinney ordered one section of his Ohio battery to within sixty yards of the enemy's line and opened a deadly canister fire upon them at short range with terrific effect which added greatly to tbe success of the day Our advance poshed rapidly forward and arrived within sight of the entrenchments one hour before dark and opened upon them with shot aud shell Night closed in put a stop to further de moustratioiis At dayl'ght next morning a steamboat was observed transporting troops across the Cumbrland when lendid battery of Parrot gnus was brought to bear on the boat which iu a tew minutes terwards was in flames The 10th Kentucky Col Harlan and 14th Ohio Col Steadman were ordered by Gen Thomas to advance on the enemy's breastworks
