The Hillward Development Corp.'s initial entry into the housing market of the Redlands area is proving successful, ac cording to Alex Graham, presi dent of Marketing Management Co., sales agents for Hillward. Graham added that the promise of successful sales is founded on the combination of old fash' ioncd quality and modem design, a combination achieved through advanced building methods and proper selection of ma tcrials and Hillward's own design department. As an example of the proper selection of quality materials is the inclusion of the complete new concept in kitchen design — the color-coordinated Caloric dream kitchens. He added that another factor of acclaim, is the location, which is ideally suited to a higher level of living on the elevated terrain of the Redlands University area. The 77-unit project was built and developed by the Hillward Development Corp. of Santa Fe Springs. It is one of the fastest growing homebuilding concerns in Southern California. It c a n point with pride at more than 3,000 quality residences constructed in many widespread locations of the Southland. Yet, the one and two story, two and Iwo-andonehalf baths, three to five bedroom rcsiden ces are priced from $24,900 and range to S29.000. Fairmont Estates, the newest in a scries of master planned developments projected by t h e Hillward firm, provides a long list of luxury features designed to meet the needs of the discriminating homcbuycr. One of these is the inclusion of a complete concept in kit chcn planning — the color-coordinated Caloric dream kitchen. Redlands Daily Facts Friday, May 1, 1964 - 13 Plant Bird of Paradise for tropical effect One of the several plants from South Africa that has taken kindly to California gardens is the Strelitzia, sometimes called "Bird of Paradise". The purplish flower bracts are borne on stiff two to three foot stems and enclose blue and gold flowers. The bird-like effect of the flower is the key to its common name. When cut, they will last for days. Strelitzia is described botani cally as a perennial, but it is treated in the garden just like a woody plant. The roots are fleshy and spreading, giving rise to leaves resembling banana plants, although stiffer and more wind-resistant. Acres of Strelitzia are grown in Southern California just for the flowers, which are easy to ship, easy to handle, and ar range themselves willing to adapt to modem interiors. In the garden, they are set in the suimiest situation available. North, they are grown in tubs and boxes where they can receive some winter protection. Besides the well - known Stre litzia reginae, with the spectacular blue and gold flowers, there is a strong, robust variety called Strelitzia nicolai. Nicol's Strelitzia can be as large as 15 feet tall. The foUage is broad and long and the flowers are blue and white. Give it room — the plants become massive! A good companion plant to the Strelitzia is Abyssinian Banana. This variety does not produce edible fruit, but it is highly oma-j mental and the hardiest of the banana group. You have noticed its broad leaf blades with a red dish midrib. It does best where there is some protection from high winds. There is a purplish-tinged leafj form of the Abyssinian Banana called "redleaf". It is useful for foliage contrast to an oversupply of greens; looks fine in front of light backgrounds. Like the green form, it needs wind and frost protection. A good leafy perennial to use in the shade for tropical effect is Acanthus, with the imlike- ly common name of "bear s- breech". The huge leaves are handsomely cut, and the current favorite is called "oakleaf". Acanthus becomes spectacular] in June, when the four foot spikes carry rosy purple flowers through July. Soon as the flowers fade, the entire plant should be cut down. New foliage appears immediate-] ly and by the end of the growing season you will have brand new, handsome plant. To suggest that a Philodendron be planted outdoors may sound a little queer, but certain non-climbing shrub forms of this favorite indoor subject are quite hardy. Best known is Phil odendron selloum (rhymes with saloon). Massive leaves are artistically cut with wavy - edged margins. Other good varieties include P. evansi and P. Jungle Garden. In addition to taking an outdoor situation in all but the very coldest of California climates, the shrub Philodendron can take quite a bit of sun. The foliage color may be a little lighter than when the planting situation pro vidcs some shade. GET MORE FOR YOUR MONEY Move by MAYFLOWER Call Mayflower—"Most recommended" of all movers!
