WAIT- ia the Aent id am jrraneiee Sflenoe is Goldea. There it nothing that Samuel J. Til- den orbit confrere Thos. A. Hendricks can possibly say by way of undertaking to convince thinking people that they were reapectiTely elected Preaident and Vice-President of the United States, and that they hare been nn-jattly defrauded out of their righta, and "counted out," that can elevate them a particle in the public eatimate of their charactera; and unleeathey can gire utterance to sentiments more in accordance with truth and morality than those expressed by them at the reception given them at the Manhattan Club in New York reoently, they had better remain silent.

Tilden based hia ill-advised remarks on the andacious and false assumption that everybody knewthat he ha4 beer, elected President, and had been counted out. For some incomprehensible purpose he aeems to have determined to assume the role of martyr and champion of purity in politics. He never was elected President of the United States; and the pure-minded men of hia party throughout the country honest Democrats' who desire the prosperity and perpetuity of our Government, and purity in politics and the adminiatra-tion of publio affairs do not claim that he was elected and do not charge that he was counted -out. The assertion that he received a majority of votes at the last Presidential election is based on- the result of the5 exercise of systematic fraud and terT roriam by his party friends in several of the Southern States, by which the bulk of the Republican votea there was suppressed. Tilden 's conduct in the Oregon case proves him to be but a political schemer, utterly dead to principle, and his persistent assumption and his effort to establish himself aa a political reformer proves him to be equally dead to shame.

Hendricks' speech variea but slightly from that of hia chief, and about all that can be gleaned from either is that they are merely a brace of magnificent soreheads, whom the Democratic Party would be wise to retire from public life at least from any prominent or influential position in their councils at the earliest possible moment. wwwwwwwwww Newspaper Investigations. Political and other tricksters, and birds of prey generally, insist that the only mission of a newspaper is to record facts," without comment; to publish verbatim the proceedings of courts and the findings of gTand juries, and indignantly deny their right to make investigations on their own account. No argument is necessary, however, to oonvince the people that they owe mor to the indefatigable exertions of newspaper men in investigating frauds and fearlessly exposing them, and remorselessly holding the guilty paiies up to public score and contempt, than Jhey dep. to the courts or the entire machinery of justice combined.

We have reached a point in the progress of civilization at which the fact has become so patent as to be apparant to every person of average intelligence, that among the forces gradually but surely eliminating truth-developing the resources of the country, exposing crime and bringing criminals to juatice, protecting the innocent and ameliorating the condition of the downtrodden and the oppressed the journalistic profession, notwithstanding many unavoidable imperfections, stands in the foremost ranks. It haa fought its wayto thia position through formidable obstables, but now holds that position on ks merits. Official rings, guilty official peculators, embez-zelers of public moneys, and individual criminals of all grades, may wince at the searching and remorseless iniquisi-tion of the press, and claiming that there are legally constituted grand juries lor purposes of investigation, and Courts for adjudication, and that i is an injustice for newspapers to interfere; yet the people well know that the machinery of justice, although intricate, is so thoroughly studied and understood especially by our elite criminals that it ia easily manipulated and justice frequently evaded. The newspapers, not being hampered by legal technicalities, can penetrate to the bed-rock and strike the truth so surely and swiftly that there is no escape or refuge from their persistent attacks. i A country editor likens Mr.

Beecher to Aioibiadea, who chonoed off hin dog's toil in order to divert attention I from bis love affairs. On this hypothesis can be explained the lata radical utterances of the Plymouth pastor on the subject of prayer, "If von can pray for anything and get it," said Mr. Beecher Sunday, "why don't you pray down Well, that plan has been tried in Chicago, but the property has been turned over, to the The number of mortgages here, however, is steadily decreasing in consequence of the good habits and devout spirit of the inhabitants, and the contumacy of tha insurance companies. Blackwood have created a genuine'aentation in publishing A Modern Minister." The English reading publio are in a state of excitable uncertainty as to who is the author of this striking piece of fiction. Tom Benton's well-known portrait, painted by Boyle, has become the property of the Missouri Historical Society, and that to celebrate its acquisition, baa invited the Hon. John F. Darby to give an. address upon the life and times of the great Charles Beade's novel 4Tti Woman Hater," is stronger and better suited to the general reader than any of his recent works.

The veil of secresy cast over the story in its serial issue was so tun and transparent that it did not need to be lifted to reveal ita author- ship. John Motley, the late John Lothrop Motley's great-grandfather, came from Belfast, Ireland, to Falmouth now Portland in Maine, and there worked at his trade, as a joiner. An uncle of the historian's, Charles Motley, now lives in Deering, and is 91 years old. The Queen of Holland, recently de ceased, was a special patron ofrMotley, the historian, who preceded her only a few days. The Queen's married relations were not very happy, and she lived in a palace a little out of The Hague, a mile or two from that inhab ited by her husband.

Kine William III. When Gen. Grant went a few weeks ago to order a new uniform in Philadelphia, his tailor invited him to step on the scales and be weighed. "Ob," pleasantly replied the ex-President, "I know my weight exactly. It is 185 pounds.

That is what I keep myself at." And, sure enough, the beam turned at juat that figure. Gen. Butler bewails his loss of in fluence at the White House, and grows pathetic over the refusal of the Preai dent to follow his advice, but he quotes no more Scripture to Pitkin, and makes no referenoe to his promised re ply to Wayne MacWeagh. He must have been badly fractured by the letter's response, or else he would have pulled himself together for an answer sooner than this. Mr.

Clemens and his fidus Arcbates, the Rev. Mr. Twichell, have just re- turned from Bermuda, having made the round trip in the same steamer, seeing all the sights, with a day to spare. The Conrant says they report the onion crop fully up to the average. Bermuda is proud of three things, its onions, its potatoes, and its roads.

It is a delightful island to walk over, and if one is fond of onions there is no place in the world where his taste can be so perfectly gratified. Mrs. Harriet Prescott Spofford, be fore she had a name for herself, used to write for the Dollar Magazine, pub-ilahed in Boston. She received the large sum of five dollars per story, i unni one day tne editor remonstrated at paying so liberally and reduced the rate to three dollars. Mrs.

SDofford. not pleased with this slender remuneration, sent the MS. she intended leaviDg with the Dollar Maeazine to the Atlantic Monthly, and shortly afterwards received a check for one hun dred dollars. Henry Weeks, the English sculpter, who has just died at the age of 70, was elected an A. B.

A. as long ago aa 1850. When he was only 27 years of age he completed abstof Queen Victoria the first that was ever taken of her after her accession to the throne. Among his best known works are the statues of Cranmer, Latimer, and Rid ley, tor the Martyrs' Memorial at Oxford; of Dr. Goodall, at Eton; of the Marquis of Wellesley, for the India Bouse; of Lord Bacon, for Trinity College, Cambridge; of Lord Aucland.

for Calcutta; and of Sir E. Barnes, for Ceylon. Longfellow's poem on holidays, which was read at the late Unitarian festival, was withheld from publication at first, but some of the newspapers obtained it and- copied it. There are only a few lines in all; not too many to reproduce here: The holiest of all holidays are those Kept by ourselves to silence and apart The secret anniversaries of the heart. When the fall river of feeling overflows.

i nose nappy days nneloaded to their close. Those sadden joys that out of darkness start, As flows from ashes, swift desires to dart, lake singing swallows, down each wind that DIOWS. White as the gleam of a receding sail. White as a cloud that floats and flits in air, White as the whitest lily on a stream Thee tender memories are a fairy tale Ul some enchanted land: we know not wnere. But beautiful as is a dream within a dream Conrad Weber of Baltimore, a young man of German parentage, lately mar ried, was a soldier during the late war, and while in service acquired a fondness for sleeping in the moonlight.

Since the war, from the 1st to the 4th of every month, always at night, he has had fits of the deepest melancholy. He would remain up all night eazins at the sky, the moon and its changes naving a special fascination tor him. A day or two since he was attacked by melancholy for. the first time in the daytime, and being left alone he was found dead, his head leaning against the wall. He had twisted several pieces of blue ribbon into a cord, made a noose around his neck, and fastened the other end of the ribbon to a picture hook, drawing up his lower limbs so as to throw the full weight of his body upon the noose.

The Japanese Prince, Kits Schiwa-kiwano Miga, a near relative of the Mikado, was lately married, in a German city, to the Baroness de Tressau, a young widow. The Prince had been sent to Germany to pursue military studies. On asking permission of the aiikadoto marry, great surprise was expressed at Court at the idea of a member of tha Royal family being wedded to a Christian. Orders were sent for his immediate return, but he preferred an immediate wedding. He then wrote! tnat ne was married, and is now awaiting a reply.

It the Mikado should refuse to sanction the union, the Prince will make Germany hia home. The bravest giil in Australia' is Grace Vernon Bussell. 1 The" steamer. Georgette was wrecked: off the west coast, near Perth; a small boat had been capsized in the surf and women and children were struggling in the water, on tne crest or a precipitous oUfTappeared the figure of a young lady on horseback. To the sailors; on the stranded vessel it seemed utterly impossible that a horse and its' rider should be able to descend that precipice.

But the young lady never -faltered. She plunge ddown at full speed and reaching the shore', spurred the horse into the foiling Burf. -There were two Unes of roaring breakers. With splendid pluck she dashed through them snd reached the boat, to which the affrighted women and children were clinging. Her horse stumbled over A hawser which stretched between the wreck and the small boat; but she clung 4 to the saddle and brought the women and children to land.

There was still man: left on board the boat. She plunged Into the breakers again and brought him safe to the shore. While those whom she had saved rescuing those who remained on the wreck, the henie girl, drenched with sea, foam and half fainting with) fatigue, galloped a dozen miles home to have relief sen! to the half-drowned, half-naked folks whom she left on the beach. Her sister. Mrs.

Brockman, took horse, galloped that night through the woods to the shore, taking tea, milk, sugar, end flour for the destitute people; and the next day the rescued were brought to Mr. Brockman's house endeared for. The anxiety end excitement proved fatal to Mrs. Brockman, who took a severe cold, and died eventually of brain fever, Grace Vernon Brussell still lives. tWMl bosses QfUaitimatt aavrtimnt not exceeding tlx lint, inrttt fc (Am col-vmn for SO Centtptr wtek.
