31. Campbell Put. a Question to D. C. Taylor Concerniag Certain Statement Hade Before Election Proof or Betrac-j tion Demanded.

Editor Tbibcne. -Please allow me space in your paper of this evening for a few lines upon a subject of vital importance to myself personally, of special, interest to the public, and one which has been, and is, of great annoyance and pain to my family. I have Waited with restless imps tience for the moment when something of this kind might be done without the possibility of a suspicion that it could have any political or electioneering significance. The second evening after election would seem to be safe in this respect. To my friends I offer the apology that the ourse I ani taking seems the only one left open to me.

It is as impossible to follow in its sinuous and rapid spread a slander spoken to a hundred people in a heated political campaign as it is to follow and gather up a bag of feathers emptied into the air at the gusty 1 cross-roads. Moreover, he whose name I shall give was, on Monday, at the Second Ward Dolling, place, publicly and in his teeth, branded as a liar by one having authority to speak, my son, Marston. and that, too, in the presence of Mr. T. O.

Crawford, with an appeal then and there to the latter to condemn such electioneering in his behalf, without eliciting one word of reply from either Mr. Crawford or this dastard assassin of reputations, who still went about the city throwing the vitriol, of his vile slander. I take, then, this method and this opportunity publicly to demand of one D. C. Taylor, a writing master, doing business at No.

1069 Broadway: 1. That, within a reasonable time from this date, he do publicly substantiate the charges which be has so industriously and widely made against me during the last few days, of gross, immorality in my rela tions with the opposite sex, during my of sial career, or at any other time. 2. That, within a reasonable time, he appear before the Board of Education, either in open or secret sesbion, as he or the Board may elect, then and there, in the interest of the moral well-being of the young, about which he has been for a week so effusively agonizing, to substantiate the charge that, of his own knowledge, there are now in the School Department teachers women who ate impure and im moral. i .3.

That, failing to respond to ith or either of the foregoing, he' shall, in writ ing, (over liis own signature, make a full. unequivocal, public retraction. 4.. Thatj refusing or neglecting to meet squarelyi these reasonable and just demands, be shall stand convicted by this community of the charge which I now file against mm, oeing, or ail imd i crea tures, that! most contemptible and base thicg, a)-wilful liar acd malicious slan derer, a nil condemned to the social os traciam whpch he shall have earned, as un fit to associate with decent men, or be seen or heard of pure women. i Fbed.

M. Campbell. Oaslakj, March 10, 1886. air. Crawford.

Replies. Editor Tribune. In an article pub hshed in yiur paier of March 10th, over the signature of Fred M. Campbell, ap pears the following: Moreover he (Mr. Taylor) whose name I shall give, was, on Monday.

at the Seconal Ward polling place publicly and in his teeth, branded as a liar by on having authority to Biieak, viz: my son Marston, land that too, in the presence Mr. T. O.i Crawford, with an appeal then and there to the latter to condemn such electioneering in bis behalf without eliuit ing one word of reply from either Mr. Crawford or this dastard assassin repu tations, etc. In reply, let lne say that much in the nnotatlon above made rplntinc to mn ia false, and the rest may mislead, unless explained.

The facts are as follows i During one of my visits to the Want saw. Mr. Taylor and Mr. Campbell's boy engaged in conversation. As 1 cam up I heard Mr.

Taylor charging Mr. Campbell with having been addicted to drink. I heard Mr. Campbell's son say that this common report was a lie. Mr Campbells! son then turned toward me, still speaking to Mr.

Taylor and said, i Crawford does not do his electioneering, in this sort of way," Mr. laylor replftd, "1 do not watit to bring Mr. Crawford in, I am able to substantiate 1 what I say. Some more words passed between the parties, after which Mr. Taylor said do not care to talk with you any Mr.

Campbell's son did not at that time speak to me at all about any thing referred to in Air. Campbell letter, nir has he at any other time. I have no knowledge of Mr. Taylor's making any charges against Air. Uampbeli other than that mentioned above.

In all his conversation with me the above charge included all. 1. (j. Crawford. Oakland, March 11, 1880.

THURSDAY MARCH 11, 1886 The Sacramento Convention.

The two conventions to consider the anti-Chibese question which met in Sacramento yesterday, jhave anjala- mated and form one convention. This will prevent the going abroad of an unfavorable report that California is upon the Chinese question. In fact, there is no division of sentiment upon the main issue opposition to Chinese coolie. cheap labor- The only division being upon the best means to accomplish the desired ends. It is hoped that tne storm; and pandemonium which characterized the proceedings yesterday, will past ayay with the night, and that the delesates will act like men united in the drtherance of a great cause The convention is supposed to have been Called for coel and cairn de liberation, and it is hoped that the proceedings to-day will be such as to give tne action oi tne voovenuon, worn-ever that action may be, character and influence at home and abroad.

Every true friend of the canse must see that I this convention, is some. thing more than a club meeting, and its action will help or injure the cause as it is governed by conservative intelii gence, or by passion and unreason. The whole East stand spectators of the proceedings of this representative body. The action of this convention is the action of the State. It should carry weight and conviction of the.

justness ofH its cause by wise action, harmonious action and conservative action, thai shsll show to the people of the East that we are reasonable as well as earnest, "the main object to be sought is the repeal of the Burlingame treaty It is hoped that good I judgment and wisdom will prevail, that the people may continue to act as a unit in opposi tion to any further increase of Mon golians, and for a gradual decrease of those now here. When there is no more hope df proper and effective legislation, then there will be time enough for ex treme me as urea. Revolution, is only justifiable when all other resources fail. What a Contrast. SeSator Loo AS, in his book lately is- aned from the press, in giving a histor teal sketch of the events which led up fto the! rebellion, among other interesting facts which should never be forgotten, are the sayings of the leaders upon both sides in that contest.

He quotes the speeches of both Jeff Davis and A bra ham Lincoln on being bailed to assume the Presidency; one of each we re pro dace below as a Jetf. Davis," on his way to assume the Presidency of the Confederacy, mad speeches all along the line from Jackson to Montgomery, and in his speech at Stevenson made the following prophesy. He said: Your border States will gladly coins into the Southern Confederacy within sixty davR. as we will be their only friends. JCngland wiU recognize us, and a glorious future is before The will grow in the Northern cities where tne pave menta have been worn off by the tread of commerce.

We will carry war where it is easy to advance where food for the sword and torch await our armies in tne densely DODulated cities: and though they may come and spoil our crops, we can raise them as before; while thev cannot rear the cities which took years of industry and mil lions of money to boild. Jeff was a litle off in his prophesy. His rebellions enthusiasm ran away with his judgment. The result was very I much! the, opposite of his predictions, and the final quashing of his whole prediction left him a false prophet indeed, What a contrast to the 1 vaporings of Jeff Da via were the words of the immortal Lincoln, when he departed from his home to assume the Presidency of this Republic, called thereto by the roice of the people. On leaving Springfield he said "M9 Fr.Undt one, not in my position, can realize the sadness I feel at this parlinr.

To this. people I owe all that am. Hers I have lived more than a quarter of i a century. Here my Children were born. And here one of them Hies buried.

I 'knowj not how soon I shall see you again: 1 I go to assume a task more difficult than that which has devolved upon any other i man since the days of Washington. He never wonld have succeeded except for the aid of divine Providence, upon which Jbe I at all times relied. I feel that I cannot succeed without the same divine blessing I which sustained and on the same Almighty being I place my reliance for support. And I hope my friends, will all pray that I may receive that divine assistance, without which I cannot succeed, but with which success is certsirf. Again" I bid you an affectionate farewell." The prayers of.
