C. Beggs, the defaulting scretary of the Oakland Consolidated Street Railway Company, will be on the street tonight. Ilia bail will be reduced to a nominal figure of $5000 cash or 10,000 bonds, and it is likely that he can eecure bonds in that' figure. The warrant accusing Bggs of grand larceny has been destroyed, and now both Beggs and Gallagher are accused of the same crime embezzlement. The Police Court lobby was crowded this morning with an assortment of electric railroad employes and other Curious friends and acquaintances of the two men.

Mrs. Beggs nor either of the defaulters' relatives were in court, how ever, and it was as well for Beggs that they were not, jr he surely would have broken down at the sight of them in such a place. I In the prisoners' dock Beggs sat toy ing with his hat nervously and looking the picture of ntter melancholy and lie feeihis disgrace keenly, and at times tears start in his eyes as he thinks of his wife and little innocent children at home. Gallagher on the other hand showed little concern about the proceedings, and caed at the court officials with the stony stare of a man utterly lost to all eense of siiame and disgrace. Beggs was represented by Attorney Fry, and when his case was called it was set over until Wednesday to allow arrangements for the examination to be made.

It is also expected that by that time the entire sum taken from the railroad will have been returned. Gallagher, who was not represented by an attorney, had his case put over until Monday to enable him to eecure legal advice. Then the men were taken down stairs to their prison cells, where Mrs. IVurvs and Begs' brother visited him. The faithful wife ib true to her husband in his hour of trouhle, and although heart-broken ehe has forgiven him.

Besrgs' father and brother also have relented toward him now that they have heard his story, and wife, father and brother ail realize that he committed the theft while Buffering the agonies of a fear of detection for having' taken the com pany's lurnu. A LOOSn CONCERN How the Railroad's Business Was Conducted. From investigation it seems that the affairs cf the Oakland Consolidated Street Railway Company are conducted in a very loose manner. When it was first reported that Beggs had Biro ply jgone to Mr. McElrath and asked for $3o00 and had received the checks without; any inquiry the people wondered at' such looseness.

i Now it transpires that the checks were not even filled out, but were signed In blank by Vice Freeideut McElrath, and in this condition were banded then to Beggs to fill out. The checks had to be countersigned by Beggs as secretary, and he was supposed to nil them out fur each amounts as were necessary. This is how Beggs managed to have the checks eo long before using them. A TALK WITH BEGGS. He Has More to Say About His Trouble.

Beggs feels his misfortune keenly, and that he is sincere in this is shown by his willingness to make a clean breast of everything. Naturally, he feels- keenly atiy misstatements in the newspapers about himself. The story about his being hypno tized by uauagner ana aoout a woman, as published in a morning ban i rancisco paper He denied touav in wnoie, and said be only regretted that innocent women were draeged into the case. "You are accused of being with two women at Dunsmuir. Can you explain that?" was asked I "Well, that is another case where I have to suffer because of Gallagher," aid Beggs with disgust.

"As '-soon es we- went into Dunsmuir Gallagher rushed right eff to call on some low women. I went over to the hotel to get a room and to change my clothing, which had Sit wet in the mountains, and Gallagher not come to the hotel for; several hours. When he did come back he said be had arranged to take two of the women with us to Upper Soda Springs. I knew rery well that they would not have those women around the i hotel at Soda Springs, and I told Gallagher I did not like his arrangement. He insisted, however, that the women were going and sure enough they were on hand early the next morning.

I objected to their being with os bo strongly that wen we had reached Soda! Borings they turned back and went to, i how much will your whole shortage amount to 'Well, with what I used for oar psse3, asi irith what Gallagher ana other merchandise, lerms casn. bale absolute. I l.avo no aliases at all," said he this "I deny that n.y right name is B. F. Curtis. uned the name Ferria at Dunsmuir, but never did so beiore in my We." WHAT THEY THINK. The Public Generally in Beggs' Sympathy.

Public sentiment is in Beggs favor. Most everybody believes that ant undue advautage was taken of him by Gallagher while his mind was -filled with forebodings of how he could make up his short: age. Beggs' willingness to return the money, as shown by his telling that he $2,590 secreted in his house, also has gained him friends, and his efforts to repay every cent, all work in his favor. It is likely- that by the time his case come? up for examination the money will have' been paid in full and then the case will be allowed to drop. Beggs has any number of friends who are standing by him in his trouble and once his bail is lowered he can easily secure his liberty? COMPLETE DETAILS.

Interesting Facts Regarding the Capture. The following detailed account was received today from The Tri lure's representative at Dunsmuir of the circumstances of Beggs capture and his doing up country. "BegE and Gallagher arrived at Dunsmuir Wednesday forenoon, where the former- sacrificed his beard as a1 partial disguise. They did not keep to their room, but soon appeared on- the streets, and in the afternoon tooL a walk to Upper tkda Springs, a mile and a quarter above Dunsmuir, accompanied by two womeu from Dansmuir. 4 "Constable Clarkson of Dansmuir met them and remarked to a gentleman who accompanied hia: "That is my man," referring to Becs.

COCSTISO THE "The money fouad upon them was piled up on a pool table in a saloon and counted in the presence, of a large crowd. There was tfSOCO recovered. for $-500 and the time of departure. They, could not have spent such a auai uii tts train. "If, instead of remaining at the spring, they had gone to McCTourt river, or some other mountain retieat east of Siason. they could have remained there for weeks undetected, and could have worked their wav into Nevada or southeastern Oregon by mountainous routes which have not yet been invaded by telegraphic service. FEGGS WAS miserable.

"Gallagher took his arrest nonchalantly, but Beggs presented a most miserable appearance. 'The mention of. his, family visibly affected hkn. His frame quivered, bis voice was choked with emotion, and tears blinded his eyes and rolled down his Cheeks. We were in front of a hotel at Mott, and when asked 'what be would have be called for whisky and be gulped down a large drink, but his hand was so unsteady he could scarcely raise it to his lips.

1 cuew Beggs by sight, and wben I remarked that he bad shaved off his beard he said: "For God's sake don't telegraph that to Thk TaiBCKE! lie said be would talk freely to me if I would be easy on him. "I showed him the Examiner. He said: 'The Examiner lies. It says I took $17,000. Just plit that in half and you will have it right.

The Examiner said be had trtree children, wiieu the number should have been four. 4 I do not think that he intended to desert his wife. lie would either have sent for her or provided her with money, for he seems to love ber as only as man can love woman. He said that when be left Oakland be had no particular destination in view, his main cbject being to jcp seeiizg stfety any where." BEGGS' BAIL. Judge Fixes It This Afternoon.

The warm wave ffi Oakland is heated a little hotter for the Board of Education in that city by several of the leading lady teachers who claim that the school law is violated in the matter of salaries, as some of the men who teach in the schools receive higher pay than women who are doing the same grade of Moreover, the ladies also assert that on more thau one occasion tbe men have slipped away at exhibition time' and permitted the lady teachers to use humrrerv carry boards and prepare for the exhibiaon, "while tiie men of the school shared equally in the honors (lerived from the exhibit. The controversy, it will be seen, has several varieties of Interest in it, and now when one member of the- lionrd cf Education asks another, "Is it not-enough for you?" he is not understood to be ret erring exclusively to the weather. FORTUNE. A Method That la Sara to Attract Hee Fsvuri. There are many weans of becoming rich other titan toiling day and night and hoarding uo Lhe rc3uits oi ue labor. As a of fact few men today who are wealthy can look hack and say that their hands earned all the.r money. It is jddi ciom speculation that makes the man and there is no better or cheaoer of becoming wealthy than by speculating ia the Lottery of the Beneticencia Fablica, whose principal place of business is the City of Mexico.

Many a man has found a fortune in this company and hundreds more will do likewise. Asa proof of this assertion it is only necessary to look back a montbs and ee tbat in San Francisco, James Stephen-eon, E. L. Walcott. Mr.

Harbutt, E. W. Krone and Tbomr.s Tusser each won a small fortune by the investment of one dollar. lu Alameda, Geonre Aliddleton, a well-known resident bu. recently won a snug sum and hundreds of others are dolus-the same each nonth.

The Loteria de la Beneficencia Publics is the only lottery protected and guaranteed by tbe Mexican Actional Government and therefore is not only safe but sure. As only 60,000 tickets are issued each month, ticKet-holders have a great chance to win. Those who buy tickets should be quite sure that thev are of tbe Loteria de la Benericencia Pnblica, as there are several so-called Mexican companies claiming to nave charters, but this 4a the only company duly authorized under the Federal Mexican Government, and its drawings are held in accordance with the privileges granted. too, the drawings are held each month in tbe big Mioreqae Pavilion in tbe presence of hundreds of people who all know that there cannot be the least fraud in tbe drawings. It is but a small matter to invest one dollar, and when the Chances are so great of winning a fortune it' seems as though there could not be a better speculation.

In everyone's expense account there is allowance macte for more or less' of small items of pleasure that ran be easily sacrihced and tbe returns for the small investment may be the means of wealth. -A HAPPY" WEDDING.
