She was a retired surgical aide at Scenic Hospital in Modesto. She loved bowling, dancing and visiting with friends. She cherished the time she spent with her grandchildren and her great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Harve and Helen Haynes and her husband, Herbert Carter Jr. She is survived by her sister, June Haynes of Missouri; son and his wife, Ron (and Judy) Carter; grand children, Kathryn and Ryan; great- grandchildren, Hannah, Natalie Rose, Jack and Jackson; and her companion for 35 years, Stan Lowry.

8, 2007 A resident of Modesto, Mabel passed at her residence at the age of 85. A native of Maui, Hawaii, Mabel came to CA in 1946 and to Modesto in 1994. She was active in the Catholic Charities. Mabel is survived by one son, Leonard A. Castro of Hughson and one daughter, Ardeth Raber of Modesto, and 3 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.

COPELAND FEB 14, 1916 MARCH 9, 2007 Age 91 of Turlock, passed away on March 9, 2007 at Beverly Manor Healthcare Center in Stockton. He was born February 14, 1916 at Stillwell, Oklahoma.

He married Elsie Naugle on May 4, 1940 in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. They were married 66 years Mr. Copeland served in the Navy as a nurse during WWII, spending time in the Panama Canal Zone. After the Navy he and his family came to California in 1946 and to Delhi in 1947 where he had a chicken and egg ranch. He delivered eggs door to door in Atwater and Merced areas until retiring in 1972 when he and his wife moved to Atwater.

While there he ran a home repair business. In 1997 they moved to Turlock. Mr. Copeland and his wife are members of the Church of Christ in Turlock. He is preceded in death by his parents and 2 sisters in Oklahoma and his daughter Treva Kelley of Moses Lake, Washington.

He is survived by his wife Elsie, a son Roy Copeland of Delhi, daughters Judy Jones of Tulsa, Oklahoma and Janet Blair of Turlock. He has 8 grand children and 11 great grand children, 4 brothers in Oklahoma and 1 brother in Michigan. Memorial Contributions can be made to Asera Care Hospice, 4545 Georgetown Pl. Lillian Marie Crow was born to Ed and Mary Hines in Summersville, Missouri on May 12, 1924 she was the 5th child of 6 children. They moved to California in 1937 when Lillian was 13 and settled in Salida until 1942 when they bought a home in Modesto on Thrasher Ave.

Lillian was living on Thrasher when she met Ed Crow. Lillian and Ed was married on May 12, 1943. They had two children, a son Ed born in July 1944 and a daughter, born in September 1945. They lived in Modesto until Ed retired in 1977 then moved to Long Barn. Ed passed away in January 1984.

Lillian stayed in Long Barn till she had a light stroke in July 1997. Lillian moved back to Modesto where she lived until she passed away on March 11, 2007. Lillian is survived by her 2 children, 1 sister, 5 grandchildren and 6 great grand children. Lillian was preceded in death by her parents, 3 sisters, 1 brother, a son-in-law and her husband. Visitation will be private.

Graveside service will be held Wednesday, March 14th at 2pm at Acacia Cemetery. Mrs. Francis was a native of Westwood, California and was a resident of Gustine for 54 years, she had previously lived in Washington for 2 years.

She was a School Bus Driver for 23 years for the Gustine Unified School District. She was a Parishoner of Our lady of Miracles Catholic Church. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters, Gustine Senior Club, the Gustine Historical Society. She loved to play Bingo, Bunko, Canesta, she also had a passion for going to the ocean. She is survived by her daughters, Judy Peters of Nevada City, CA, Bonnie McGowen of Merced, Tammy Rocha of Gustine; four grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph M. Francis in 2003 and her sister, Nancy Ross in 1961. A visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., with a rosary to follow at 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, March 14th at Our Lady of Miracles Catholic Church in Gustine. Godwin passed away on March 9th, 2007 in her home. Born in Barling, Ark, she lived in Modesto Ca the last seven years, formerly of Sacramento, CA. She retired from the California Highway Patrol Academy. She is survived by her husband, Jerry Godwin of Modesto; her children, Mike Maurer, Mercedes King and Mark Maurer; her step- children, Joey Godwin, Jeanie Bullard, and Danny Godwin of Georgia, and Vicky Massengale, David Godwin and Aaron Thomas Godwin of Sacramento; her 16 grandchildren; her 2 brothers, Lewis Byrum and Gene Leister; her 2 sisters, Alice Thacker and Priscilla McGhee. A celebration of her life will be held at the home on Saturday, March 17th at She will be laid to rest at Skyview Memorial Lawn in Vallejo, CA on a future date.

(born Dorthea Jean Bush) was born in Oakland, CA and grew up in Oak- dale, CA, one of three children of California State Senator and State Supreme Court Judge, David F.

Bush. She attended Pomona College and graduated with a BA from the University of California at Berkley. She later earned both Masters and Doctorate degrees in Education from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Deedee was an educator at both the university and early child- hood levels, and was at the forefront of the Integrated Day movement for early childhood education, directing a program at Meadow Demonstration School (University of Massachusetts) combining grades one through three in what she termed an Open Classroom. She also taught student teachers at the University of Southwest Texas at San Marcos, and was an early leader in training teachers for the Head Start program in New York City, commuting there weekly from her home in Massachusetts for several months in the She spent many years living all over the world with her husband, Major Wesley L.

Hudelson, during his career in the Air Force. She particularly enjoyed their interna- tional postings, and their time in Morocco remained a treasured memory. They also lived for signifi- cant periods in Rhode Island, Texas, and Massachusetts; she spent the final years of her life in Staunton, Virginia. Deedee leaves behind many loving friends and family members. A spirited, intelligent and engaging woman, she was a petite person with a big personality who brought courage and independent thought to every challenge.

All who knew her remember her flair, her warmth, her love of children and the zeal she brought to every activity. She com- bined worldly experience with a childlike openness to everything and everyone. Deedee was that rare indi- vidual who experienced more than most, but retained a true sense of awe and wonder at the everyday. She loved trying new foods, but probably enjoyed an ice cream cone as much as anyone on the planet. Dorthea is survived by her three children and their families: Travis and Patty (Spinner) Hudelson, and Molly, Luke and Madeline Hudelson; Mary Horowitz and Nora Grosvenor; Julie and Larry Farrell and Heather and Peter Bernard and Ben and Tan- ya Farrell; her great grandchildren: Wesley, Sam and Cecelia Bernard and Charles and Henry Farrell; her sister and brother-in-law, Louise and Oliver Ostlund; her brother, Hartley Bush and her niece, Laura Paige.

Deedee added much love to the world and left it a better place. The family requests donations to Children International: in lieu of flowers. A Memorial Service will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church in Staun- ton, Virginia on Tuesday, March 13 at 2 PM. Long, age 78 passed away peacefully on March 9, 2007 in Hughson, CA with her family at her side. Leona was born on November 10, 1928 in French Camp, CA. Leona enjoyed fishing, camping, bowling, playing bingo, and gambling at the Chicken Ranch Casino. She is survived by her husband of 33 years, Curtis Long of Modesto; her children Luella, and Gerold; her step children Curt, Danny, Gary, Jimmy, Cindy, and Becky; 27 grand children and numerous great and great-great grandchildren. Leona is preceded in death by her son Danny and step son Bobby, her siblings Rosella, LaVerne, Helen, and Bob.

Leonas family and friends have truly enjoyed having her in their life and they could not have asked for anything more. She truly blessed her family and friends with her presence. A memorial will be held on Thursday March 15, 2007 at at the San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery located at 32053 W. McCabe Rd. in Gustine, Ca.

27, 1926 MAR. 9, 2007 Native of Spiro, OK, resident of Turlock, Robert passed at the age of 80. He served in the Army from 1942 1944. He was a driver for Adohr Farms in South Gate for 35 years. Services are private and under the direction of Allen Mortuary.

GLADYS MIZUGUCHI-ALVERSON FEB. 26, 1919 FEB. 23, 2007 Gladys was a native of Fresno and a resident of Modesto. She is survived by her daughters, Sharon Y. Barnhart of Yuma, AZ and Janet Mizuguchi of Washington, six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her daughter, Nancy Wierenga. OBITUARIES DAVID FRED POWELL Age 67, native of Reno, NV and most recently had resided in Modesto, CA passed away on March 9th after a courageous 4 year battle with cancer.

He was at home surrounded by his wife and 4 daughters. Surviving family members are his loving wife, Linda, of Modesto; daughters, Judy Stephens, Modesto, Jeanne (Bart) Marks, Reno, NV, Kerryn (Keith) Paul, Modesto and Jill (Bill) Gulart, Manteca, CA. Also surviving are 8 grandchildren, Ronnie Murillo, Zachary Stephens, Haley and Connor Marks, Sarah and Hannah Paul, Max and Brooklyn Gulart and 3 great grandchildren: Marquesionae, Asianya and January. His stepmother, Helen Powell, lives in Reno, NV. He was preceded in death by his parents, David and Helen Powell and granddaughter, Janelle.

Fred loved family, friends and FISHING. Growing up in Reno, he fished the Truckee River, hunted the hillside now covered in homes and played sports, especially baseball. As first baseman, he was on the 1954 Reno All Star Team and was on State Championship Teams with American Legion Junior Baseball and Reno High Baseball Teams. Fred also had the honor of hitting the first home run out of the then new Babe Ruth Ball Park in Reno. In 1957 Fred graduated from Reno High and attended UNR, served in the Army Reserves and then went to work for Rogers Jewelry.

Rogers relocated Fred to Modesto in 1976. Early in his career he was a sales- man and Store Manager. After moving to Modesto he became Dis- trict Manager and Vice President in charge of Sales. Eight years ago he semi-retired and chose to continue working part time for Rogers. Fred was employed for Rogers for 48 years before retiring earlier this year due to his illness.

Fred was a member of Shelter Cove Community Church in Modesto. His funeral and memorial service will be at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, March 14 at the Salas Brothers Funeral Home in Modesto. 1, 2007 Aleta Wolverton Shaw passed away March 1, 2007 at the age of 71 in Modesto, CA. She was born September 10, 1935 in Stigler, Oklahoma. She was predeceased by her husband, Vernon on February 18, 2003, and her youngest son, John Steven Shaw on July 11, 2002. She is survived by her eldest son, Wayne Barnes-Shaw of Brooktrails, CA, her daughter Deborah Lynn Kirtley of Cupertino, CA, and son Christopher Lee Shaw of Modesto, CA. She was the grandmother of six grandchildren including: Kellie Shaw, Kimberly Bennie, Rebecca Kirtley, Christina Shaw, Ashley Shaw, and Destiny Shaw.

She is also survived by two sisters: Lucille Shaw of Waterford, CA and Charlotte Howard of Modesto, CA.
