Petrone is a self-employed He and Agresta had continuously talked about running, and this year seemed like a good time because they believe the national election will draw a bigger voter turn out.

According to Petrone, the property taxes in Englewood Cliffs went up 30-60 percent in one year and there has been a 33 percent budget increase over the past four years. He believes there is a good amount of spending going on that is "fiscally irresponsible," and he wants to change that. Petrone said that with the present entirely democratic Council, there is no system of checks and balances and little debate over any issues. He would like to promote discussion among members of the Borough Council and provide oversight to residents about different issues that arise within the town. Agresta's main motivation for running for Council is to be more involved in his community and to incorporate a two-party system in Englewood Cliffs.

He also believes that a transparent, open government is needed so taxpayers can see where their money is being spent. A budget cut in the first year of serving is an additional goal. As a "fiscally oriented conservative," he wants to bring excessive spending to a minimum and allow decisions made by the Council to be heard via different mediums, especially the Internet. With those outlets, the Council will be aware of citizens' oppositions and be better prepared for discussion among individuals in the Borough.
