Is the New York ingenue lifestyle everything that's presented in the movies and plays? "It's hard but it's also a lot of fun. I am very lucky to have graduated in May and since then I have able to do "Adam always encourages me to go for it. Since he was an actor in New York theater he completely understands everything I face. Sometimes it can be very scary to do the auditions but one must just take a deep breathe and go for it," said Rothenberg. Rothenberg is appearing in a two-person play called, "Collected Stories." This play brings her full circle from her start in theater as a child to starring in a play produced and director by Michael Bias, her former acting teacher.

But Rothenberg didn't get the part in a slam dunk nod due to whom she knew. It was an open casting call and Rothenberg had to beat out 60 other actresses with three separate readings to win the role. Bias said, "Anne aced the audition." Bias, a Tenafly resident, founded the Garage Theater Group, also in Tenafly. Today Bias is the artisticproducing director of the company. About "Collected Stories" he said, "It is really art imitating life.

I have known Anne since she was 11 years old and in a way I was very much her mentor. Now I'm directing a play about the mentoring relationship with these two characters. The mentor and her protege. Sometimes when we're discussing the characters it becomes very real because as the former mentor I consider, how would I feel in this situation. Anne talks about how she feels." The play presents a series of stories covering a six-year period giving the young actress a greater range of ages and emotions to portray.

To prepare for the part Rothenberg improvised ways to make herself look older than her 23 years. "I remember reading the play when I was in college," said Rothenberg, "and at the time I thought what a great part it would be for me to play. Now I am in it." "It's an incredibly complex relationship and the play portrays it from a lot of angles," she adds. Donald Margulies wrote the play and it was first produced in 1994 at the Manhattan Theatre Club. Margulies also wrote "Brooklyn Boy." Rothenberg began talcing acting classes and appearing in productions for the Garage Theatre's youth company when she was 11, and eventually she went on to teach classes to 6- to 12-year-olds during a couple of summers.

The play runs from through Nov. 20 and the Becton Theater, where the Garage Theatre Group is in residence, is located conveniently only a few miles from her Tenafly hometown. Certainly, Rothenberg expects strong turnout from old family friends and Tenafly neighbors. Her parents, Ken and Gillian Rothenberg still live in Tenafly.
