After all, it is the season for giving. The City Council rejected the tourist opera- last design as too plain. It showed the new station, south of its current depot, consisting en- tirely of five out-of-operation train cars on a sepa- rate rail spur. It would be built against a 350-foot- long passenger platform a block south from its Sierra Avenue location.

Revised drawings submitted to the Plan- ning Department show posts holding up a roof- like structure to protect passengers from rain and sun over about 80 feet of the train platform. would suspect he (the train operator) is re- sponding to something we thought was impor- tant not only aesthetically but to the structural significance of a train said Steve Hal- lam, the city community development director who is reviewing the drawings. Mayor Pat Kuhn complained the earlier ver- sion looked like a temporary station that could easily be moved out of town. The city is contribut- ing $250,000 toward a parking lot for the station. Dinner Train President Chris Hart, who has denied the company has any intention of leaving town, said he is still working with city planners on final details, such as the size of the overhang.

It has operated the tourist train since 1999. It guides tourists on various theme-oriented trips through eastern Stanislaus County. But its depot on Sierra Avenue is too big, Hart has said, prompting the company to sell the building. Prop- erty records show it sold in October for $1.3 mil- lion. Hart said the train company has permission to operate there until Jan.

15, by which time he had planned to open at the new station. But with the changes to the plan, Hart said, he has doubts about finishing the new station in time and is working to get an extension to keep operating out of the current location until the new one is ready.
