By CARL GUYS Head Start There's gonna be another year of predicting for you grid fans as soon as our ad men get the sheets ready. If they go this weekend, here's a tip from Cleveland, Ohio, courtesy of NBA: UCLA 13 Oregon State 10; U. El Paso 22 Pacific 12; Air Force 37 SMU 32 Miami (Ohio) 31 Xavier 13? West Va. 31 Cincinnati (sans Greg) 16; Drake 42 Louisville 38; and Wake Forest 22 over North Carlolna State's 18. The guy who predicted these battles is none other than the Fearless Forecaster Major Amos B.

Hoople, the Old Boy Himself. The one forecast he came up with which sorta rubs us the wrong way was the SMU-Air Force prediction. This strip, although we come up with Air Force Falcon stuff through the courtesy of Col. Ernie copy of Air Force (Falcon News), we picked the SMUs to win the SWC and sorta hope they win the initial one over a tough Air Force Academy crew to establish a bit of self confidence. Passing Scared Although the pro-type passing attack, led by junior Jim Lindsey, will again be the feature of Abilene Christian College football in 19G9 the running game will be 'muchly improved'.

V.T. Smith and David Wallace, two 9.8 sprinters with necessary moves tie up with 6-4, 215 pound Jim Lee Will to Lindsey some relief from air travel. Lindsay threw for 2,717 yards, a figure which was No. 1 in the nation and the school's most productive mark in history. BUT the Wildcats had a poor mark of 4-5-1 last year.

Thus the running game became a necessity this year. Despite the emphasis on the ground game during the preseason wqrkouts you can bet they'll be up in the air plenty and that passer-quarterback Lindsey will be on a lot of fans' All-American prospect list. Jap Javalina If the Javelinas at Texas had a tri-lingual quarterback, he could call 'em in Japanese and center Mike Roley of Yoka- hama would know what was going on. The Javs were tough in '68 with the Lone Star Conference title on six wins and a lone loss and then a 20-0 win over Northern South Dakota in the NAIA playoffs before dropping the 43-35 titt to Troy, Alabama State in the other NAIA battle. The most notable bit of '68 was the Angelo State victory, 44-0, which game coach Gil Stelnke his 100th win as head coach.

This fall Steinke his 16th year as the man at but he knows his way around well since he put in five seasons of pro ball with the Philadelphia Eagles. Gil's bit this fall is to replace the seven starters on defensel He will try to do it with a battery of junior transfer lads. Offensively only two starters are gone and all-conference, All- American honorable mention junior Dwight Harrison is back. He who Javs, haves. Tough Ivy Leaguer Calvin Hill, dubbed "super rook" by KRLD's Frank Glieber, on question of time in Ail-Star game camp: "ft hurt from the standpoint that during that time I wasn't working on Cowboys plays and formations.

But, physologically, it was probably good for me. I had played in the Ivy League and had read all about these other players and how good they were. By playing with them I could see-they were not that much better-or any better-than I Also, credit Glieber playing you'd think he guy for pointing out: "The way he's was playing against the Harvards." A Good Look Capt. Coleman Newman, director for the National Park Service here, said he was both surprised and glad that President Nixon and his choppers cruised: above the lake and took such a long look. Newman said he figgered the President and party would beat it right back to the base but not so. Up the Rio Grande they went looking over both the Rio Bravo side and our side before lumbering back to Laughlin. ABC del 1st The Amistad Bass Club will officially fish for $125 worth of George Whltehead's and Donnle Mills' money since the Short Stop, all three of 'em, are putting up the do-re-ml for the Sept.

21 "TWELVE HOUR" derby. It is every man for himself for six places. They'll pay for the first three biggest bass and the first three heaviest stringers. ABC prez Mike Haynes announced today that the September one would be the best one of the entire derbies (thus far, he mean't) and that every member oughta sign up at Eddie Brock's before 6 a.m. Sunday, Sept.

He "sez" it won't be a matter of "ketching" bass it'll be a case of who'll sack the "mostest and the Haynes and veep Bob Smith again hit 'em on those Thin Stix topwater hustlers over the weekend. Browns Place Ryan on Waivers CLEVELAND (UPI)-; Dr. Frank Ryan, the former Rice University quarterback who took the Cleveland Browns to the National Football League championship five years ago, was placed on waivers by the Browns Tuesday.

Ryan, who recently received his doctor's degree in mathematics to add to the' 11 records he holds as a Cleveland quarterback, became a free agent when no other team picked him up and he is expected to try to make a deal with another club. Ryan, 33, in his 12th season in the NFL, spent four seasons after he left Rice sharing the signal calling duties on the Los Angeles Rams. He was traded to Cleveland in July. 1962, and took over the job as the Browns' No. 1 quarterback in the middle of that same season.

In five seasons as a regular, Ryan led Cleveland to the NFL title in 1964, an Eastern Conference title, a Century Division crown and two runner up places in the ence.race. Last season, however, the Browns failed to move the ball e'arly in the season and Coach Blanton Collier replaced Ryan with Bill Nelson, who took the club to the Eastern Conference crown by beating the Dallas Cowboys. The Browns also took Jerry Rhome, a quarterback, from the Cowboys this year in a pro-1 season trade and Ryan became expendable. DEL RIO (TEXAS) NEWS-HERALD, Wednesday, September 10, 1969-9 Wildcat Punter When veteran quarterback-punter Bruce Massey was put out of commission for part of the coming season at Friday's inter- squad scrimmage, the Del Rio Wildcat punting game suffered a set back. To find a kicker Coach Denson Moody put out the punting call Saturday and Monday and came up with Gary Adams who is now in the 35-40 range with adequate height.

From all outward appearances Adams will handle the punting chores, if needed, in Hondo Friday when the Wildcats invade the Owl nest. Moody also told the News- Herald that the Cats came off Coaches Not All Smiles By United Press International Texas Coach Darrell- Royal watched his top offensive unit obliterate the second defensive squad 38-3 Tuesday but said "I was still disappointed." He was not alone. Texas Coach Gene Stallings did not like the looks of his Aggie workout, Arkahsas Coach Frank Broyles said his Razorbacks won't like what they see at the movies and J. T. King of Texas Tech is mad at the weatherman.

Charles Speyrer scored apair of touchdowns on a 41-yard pass from quarterback James Street and a 47-yard punt return during the Longhorns' practice. Steve Worster led the rushing attack with 94 yards in 12 carries followed by sophomore Jim Bertelsen with 70 yards in a dozen tries. Royal said Texas has not started preparing for their sea- son opener Sept. 20 against California. "I would like to have one more scrimmage this week and get down to game said.

Stallings had little worlds of cheer following the Aggies' workout, "They all acted like they were just trying to make a day," he said. "It was an awful practice. Everyone acts like they want something without working for it." Broyles was displeased mainly over the performance of his two quarterbacks Bill Montgomery and John following a scrimmage which-dealt primarily with offensiye'plays. "I think they will be disappointed in themselves when they see the films," he said. Heavy rain in Lubbock forced the Red Raiders inside the men's gym at Texas Tech where King could only work on basic fundamentals.

"It was almost like blackboard day," King said. Rice Coach Bo Hagan announced a couple -of changes in his starting offensive unit. Tommy Peel of San Antonio won back his offensive guard spot rom Paul Strahan of Odessa and Dwayne Young of Denver City replaced Wright Moody at center. Moody sent scouts to watch the Owls in a scrimmage action and got the word that the Owls are big, eager to 'hit' and unwilling to give ground, Del Rip's advance intentions may ha veto be realized by air. Moody, in a pensive mood, reminded the News-Herald, "We have been on the losing end for the past two years with Hondo, 20-0 in 1967 and 7-0 last year. We expect a 110 per cent effort from each and every boy who gets into the game and we want to return Friday night with a victory." One other phase of the grid game entered the coach's mind and he mused, "We have to put our confidence in the new punter, Adams, and hope began kick under pressure. Then there's the question of the long snap from center. We still don't have the final answer on who'll do the snapping, Ronnie Ricks or Roger Green.

Cowboys Defense Faces Tough Job DALLAS (UPI)- The defense for the Dallas Cowboys feels it had its work cut out for it since offensive stars Craig Morton at quarterback 'and Bobby Hayes at wide receiver were injured Saturday in a 25-9 win over the New York Jets. Roger (Staubach) and I know they will." We all will." Howley said Sunday night's game with Baltimore will be a good test for the Cowboys.
