Once morn change your pint and took np from the earth's The amtsroiHs an now be smr fof when they stribn lbs nit they ii i mw with becoming shooUafl stared As it is bom this position only that we ever see thorn, note their behavior with more A shooting star coming toward you appears only a bright atatintify pofott vfi the shy.

That point is a marked one in every shower, ana is called tho radianL The meteors to thft right and left of Um stationary one are. in fact, moving in tho common traction, bat they wrsm to move in the aky away from tha radiant. In other words, the tracks produced backward will all meet in one point in the sky. This radiant point may be in the sky, or lathe sofdth, or at anyplace between. It will in general rise in toe est and set the weal, like tbe sun or star, keeping in alway it fixed place among the stare.

Need I tell yon bow much we would like to have soma of these hits from tbe me teoroid stream to handle, to try with tlu blowpipe and under the microscope, perhaps ttms to lee jii something of their history 7 We do have something like this. At times large meteor masses come crashing Into tho air. They burn with a light bright enough to be seen over several states. Coming down usually a little lower than the shooting stars, most frequently to a height of twenty-five or thirty miles, they break tip with ft noise like the firing of heavy ftrtillcry, to be heard over several counties. Fragments scattered In every direction fall to the ground, often over ft region ten ftnd twenty miles in extent I ran show you several suck fragments.

Thera are over a hundred of them In our college cabinet, one of which weighs nearly a too. Between these HTOVK-PROnrOIXO MKTRORM and the faintest shooting star I cannot find any clear lino of division. have meteors that break with a loud detonation, but no Iragmsnts are seen to fall. One such was seen, in i860, from Pittsburg to New Orleans, and from Charleston to Ht. Louis.

It exploded over the boundary line of Tennessee and Kentucky. We have others which Are only seen to break into pieces, no noise being heard. Then we have those which quietly burn out Like the larger ones, these may leave smoky trains that last for minutes. One such I have seen for forty-five minutes, as it slowly Hosted away in the current of the upper air. Thus, through the wholn range, from the meteors that give os these stones end irons for our museums down to the faintest shooting star hardly seen by a person watching for it, we puss by the smallest diil'crcnccs.

They differ iu size, iu color of HAine, und direction, in train, in velocity. But in astronomical character all seem to be alike. They moe in long orbits like comet, nmi like comets at all angels to the earth's orbit. In fart, a me-tcoroidi is a small comet, not having, however, a comet's tail. LIKE ME.

The roost fanciful little garment that is introduced among summer styles is the colored silk apron, trimmed with pleated riounce or white muslin edged with Valenciennes. The pocket aro trimmed with narrow pleating, with a broad rib-lion. Everybody wears a high comb this season, and the higher the more fashionable. Black jet combs are the latest offering on the altar of style, and these are hardly a becoming as tortoise shell and amber, though they are ns expensive ss tho one and more costly than the other. H. A. Hie Nli. bcii'iiliSe )iuil ef Yil 4 olivse. suppose that each one you has often seen a shooting star.

On a clear night you havo seen a bright point of iight travel ouickly across tbe sky as though a star had Ireen shot from its place in the firmament. It may, if it was a large one, have broken into sparks as it disappeared, or have left a cloudy train aiong part of its path for an instant, or perhaps it was so faint even that you could not he quite sure that you saw anything. Home of you havo seen these shooting stars by hundreds iu star showers. Until near the close of the last century poets dreamed, and other men guessed, aliout these objects, hut knew nothing. Two German students, llrande and Hen-Bcnbcrg, found out and told us that those bright (lights were in tho cmtlt PARTS OK THE ATMOSPHERIC.

From tho two ends of the city a track nhvays appeared to be in tha same part of tho heavens. Hut when ono wont to a village many miles away a track was seen by the two persons tat A and H) iu dilfrr-parts of the sky. Hence they were able to mensure tho height of the shooting stars from tho ground. We now know that those luminous paths are rarely less than forty miles or more than ninety miles irntn the curth. We also know that any shooting star was a small body of unknown suo, perhaps not larger than a pehblo or grain of coarse sand even, undoubtedly solid, which has been traveling around tho suu in it own independent orbit, like Atty planet or comet.

Its path came within 4,000 miles of tho earths center, and so tho small body struck iuto tho earth's atmosphere. It velocity was so great filly or a hundred times that of canon ball that even in our rare atmosphere an intense light and heut was developed by the re sistancc, and the body wus scattered in powder or smoke. These bodies before they come into the air, 1 call meteoroids. It is only when they have reached our atmosphere and begin to burn that wo ever see them. They arc thon withiu ninety miles of the ground.

Hrandes, ouo of the two German students spokeu of, was riding in an open post wagon on the night of December and saw and counted hundreds of these shootiug slurs or meteors. At limes they came us last ns six or seven a minute. Those meteors which Hrandes saw that night wo now know were HITS FROM im.l.ls I O.MKT, In November, )H33, occurred tho famous star shower, which some of you saw. Tho facts of that shower gave to two New Haven men, Rrof. Twining and Prof.

Olinstcnd, tho clue to the true theory of tho shooting stars. From that date shooting stars have belonged to astronomy. Tbe November meteors were admitted a new constituent of the solar sys tern. Three years Inter M. Quetelet, ot Hrusscls, found that shooting stars are to be seen ill unusual numbers about the 10th of August of each year.

A fc months Afterward Mr. Herrick made independently tho same discovery but he also told us of star showers in April ami in January. What Hrandes had seen in December, led Mr. Herrick, moreover, to expect a like shower in other Decembers, und be asked that shooting stars be looked for tho 6th and 7th of December, IH38. This shrewd guess was justified, for on tho evening of those days hundreds of these meteors were seen iu America, in Europe, and in Asia, by persons thus induced to look for them.

These shooting stars, also, had once been parts of Hiela's comet, though this fact was not dreamed of at that time. In tin course of liino we came to know more aImiuI the meteoroids; that iu gencrul they moved ix i.onu oitairs, liko comets, rather than round ones like planets; that some of them were grouped in long, thiu streams, many hundreds ot millions of miles long, and that it was by the earths plunging through these that 'wo have star showers; that the space traveled over by the earth ho iu it everywhere some of these small bodies, probu bly the outlying members of hundreds of meteoroid streams. Also tho Hriodic time und the puth of tho stroams of November mctcroios were lound out. Then came tho interesting discovery that in thh stream, and in that of (lie August meteroids. lay the path of two comets.

Then Dr. Weiss, of ienua, showed that the meteors seen by Hrandes, and by Herrick, in 13H, as well us many meteor seen near December 1st. of oilier yours, aud the Biela comets all belonged to eacb otber. It is then properly a part of my story toi show you the le-bavior of one of the streams ot meteroids. Standing several hundreds of miles away, see them enter the upper 'atmosphere.

They are entirely unseen until they strike the air. They tnen come down like drops of fiery rain a few miles, in parallel lines, burning tip long before they reach the ground? The air is in fact a shield, protecting the men below irorn a furious bombardment. The region of THX M'MINOUS TftAt'fta is many times above that of the highest mountains. Go' further away. Parallel lines may show the paths of the meteoroids, though the bodies themselves arcs too small to be seen.

They strike a little way iuto the air, to some persons coming from the aenith, to some uomiug obliquely, to some skimming through the upper air aud uusaen by all upon oue hemisphere. peed hardly remind you that suulight aud twilight and clouds often come iu to prevent the seeing of the star (lights by per sous below, up still further away, rroui outside look in toward the sun upou tha earth and meteroid stream. The me-Uroida iu fact, are not to be seen. The stream ia of. unknnwn-depth perhaps millions of miles dee pi Ita density in- 'eases iu geueral toward tbo peuter.

won the deusetf part of the November stream in two or three hours, und tlm whole passage of the August stream require throe or four duys. Tho Hiola stream is crossed obliquely, tho meteroids ovortakiug the onrth. The August stream is marly perpendicular, and the November stream meets tbe earth. Again, go still further away, out to tho poiiit which wo first looked down upon the earth and eomeb Wa then see (by tbe mind's eye) the meteoroids strewn along tho elliptic orbit of Uie comet for hundreds of millions of miles, forming a stream of unknown breadth, but ip the scale ol the first Ugure lliowu you, about au O. 8MITII.
