R This Week's Picture Show-AP Newsfeatures. obert Francis Kennedy announced his candidacy for the Democratic nomination for President of the United States from the same location, the Caucus Room of the Old Senate Office Building, from which his late brother had done so eight years earlier. His decision, based in part on the New Hampshire primary victory of Senator Eugene McCarthy, came several weeks before President Lyndon Johnson declined to run for a second full term. , • For the man who.-ran- the successful presidential campaign for his brother in i960, political experience has come through hard work. In 1944, he left his studies to enlist as a Naval seaman. Following the war, he returned to Harvard to receive a B.A. in 1948. In 1951, following his LL.B from the University of Virginia Law School, Robert moved to Washington, D.C., to begin work in the Department of Justice. Nine years later, he w:vs appointed Attorney Ceneral of the United States. During those nine years, he helped run his brother's successful 1952 campaign for the U.S. Senate, then became an assistant counsel to the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigation. Six months later he left, returning in February, 1954, as chief counsel for the Democratic minority. Under new chairman John L. McClellan in 1955, he became chief counsel. Following the failure of his brother John to obtain the, vice-presidential nomination in 1956, Robert became chief counsel of the Senate Select Committee on Improper Activities in the Labor or Management Field in 1:957. Then came 1960, his brother's successful presidential bid and his appointment as Attorney General. The assassination in 1963 led to the end of this career. For Robert, however, born the seventh of nine children to multimillionaire Joseph Kennedy and wife Rose on November 20, 1925, at Brookline, Mass., the call to political activity was strong. Seeking the New York State senate seat in 1964, he defeated incumbent Kenneth Keating by some 800,000 votes, making the first time in history three brothers have been elected to the.
