Six months later he left, returning in February, 1954, as chief counsel for the Democratic minority. Under new chairman John L. McClellan in 1955, he became chief counsel. Following the failure of his brother John to obtain the, vice-presidential nomination in 1956, Robert became chief counsel of the Senate Select Committee on Improper Activities in the Labor or Management Field in 1:957. Then came 1960, his brother's successful presidential bid and his appointment as Attorney General. The assassination in 1963 led to the end of this career.
