College SU 9-1110 NORTHWEST NEWS Thursday, April 19, 1 Former Putnam City student wins award in Florida oratorical contest Tommy Smith, who attended Putnam City High School as a freshman last year, recently won third place in the standard oration contest at the Florida Key Club Convention sponsored by Kiwanis International. He received an award of $50. Tommy is at present a sophomore in Hillsborough High School in Tampa, Florida.

The contest was for original orations on the subject, "What Freedom Means to Me." There were more than 2000 persons at the convention when the three state winners were chosen. The students who placed first and second were both seniors, and they won awards of $200 and $100. All of the cash awards go toward paying expenses for the winners to attend the national convention in Long Beach, Calif. where they will enter the national competition. Tommy is a member of the Key Club in Hillsborough High.

While he was a student at Putnam City he was accepted in the Junior Toastmaster's Club the Gavel Club), through the efforts of his speech teacher, Mrs. Mrs. Roy B. Sheets. In a letter to Mrs.

Sheets, Tommy stated, "I am most deeply indebted to you, for because of being a member of Toastmasters, I was accepted by the Key Club here, which is a division of Kiwanis International." Tommy's winning oration is as follows: "'What Fredom Means To Me" "Thomas Jefferson has been credited with writing our Declaration of Independence in which he stated, 'All men are created I believe nothing could be farther from the truth today. "Today, literally millions are born into oppression, poverty and ignorance, while others, like ourselves, enter the world in comparative luxury, with freedom and boundless oportunity. "By the grace of God, we are among this fortunate group. By the sacrifice of countless dedicated patriots, we remain free today. Consequently, we are indebted to God and those courageous men.

"The responsibility and privileges of freedom rest upon each and every one of us. "Freedom is a privilege freedom demands responsibility! "In preparing this message to you today, I had to think a great deal about these privileges and responsiblities and what they mean to me. Follow along, if you will, and see if they mean the same to you. "I have the privilege to think FOR CONTINUATION OF EQUALIZATION Re Elect FORD COUNTY For Fair and Just Assessment to All! HENRY FORD DESERVES APPRECIATES YOUR VOTE AND SUPPORT FOR ASSESSOR and develop my own ideas without fear of punishment or restraint. I am my own machine, free to accomplish my purposes and my ideals in life. I am free to associate with whom I choose. "I I am free to investigate and discover in my own manner. With this goes the privilege to form my own opinion.

"I have the privilege to worship God as I see fit. There is no national church, and if I so choose, I may even start my own church. "I am free to come and go as I please, to contribute what I want, and to pursue happiness. I am free to develop myself physically and morally, to shape my life as I choose. I am free to speak and act within the limits of social order.

Also important is my right to protest vigorously that with which I disagree. "I am free to read what I choose, and feel confident it hasn't been censored by my government because it doesn't agree with some of its principles. "There are numerous other privileges, many of which are different and personal to each of us. "For every privilege there is a responsibility. I have responsibilities to God, to my country and to my family.

"I have the responsibility to educate myself. No country can advance its principles without educated men to develop them. My education will help me support my family and keep my government from supporting me. "I have the responsibility to protect freedom. To do this I must have another responsibility, that of serving my country and society.

Men are being turned away from our defense units daily because of ing physically or morally unfit to serve. And just as many are forgetting their duties to society. "With this last responsibility comes another, that of making and keeping myself physically and morally fit. If I am not physically fit, I am a direct drain on my government. Morally unfit, I am a nuisance.

"Extremely important is my responsibility to protest encroachments on freedom. If I protest, others may follow, and soon my government will hear those protests. "Fulfilling this leads directly to the responsibility of providing leadership. There are people waiting for leaders, and they need only to hear them to rise up and follow. "I have a responsibility later in life to vote to protect my freedom.

If I fail to vote on some issue or in some election, I am giving one vote to that which I don't want. Only too late will find that the very thing I was against has become a law. How can I protest something which I have indirectly voted for? "We gathered here and our fellow Key Clubbers are the leaders of our schools today and of our society tomorrow. I love America, and I would gladly dedicate my life to preserve the freedom our forefathers created, so that my children and their descendents can enjoy forever the blessings we have inherited. These are some of my thoughts on 'What Freedom Means to If you and I don't think about what freedom means and assume the responsibility to protect and preserve it in the future, who will? "Who will determine whether our children and our beloved country will remain free or perish under the yoke of oppresion.

Again, if not we who will?" NIGH GOVERNOR The Maturity of Experience The Vigor of Youth "Big 'K' has called upon the Russian people to start eating horse meat.
