The Dodgers, now 15-5 and who hold down second-place in the rugged Big Eight Conference, jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first three innings then held off a Knight comeback. Right fielder Neal Bartholow got Fort Dodge going as he blasted a two-out homer off of Alan Kohorst in the first inning over the right center field fence. The winners made it 3-0 after three frames as Randy Kolbe led off with a single and stole second. After Kohorst got winning pitcher Joe Black on strikes, Dan Shupe singled down the right field line to score Kolbe and a 2-0 margin. The next batter, Steve Davis, reached on an error to allow Shupe to score and a 3-0 lead. The Knights, now 7-10 for the season, got their first run in the fourth as Mike Gute and Tom Nurse blasted back-to-back triples with no out. But Nurse was stranded on third base as Joe Roetker popped out, Jeff Hunter struck out and Larry McLellan grounded out. The Knights made it 3-2 after five as Russ Rupiper beat out an infield hit with two outs. Then Phil Baldus lined a double to score Rupiper. Kuemper never really threatened again, but the Dodgers added an insurance run in the seventh. Joel Shipman doubled down the left field line. With Kelly Warren running for him, Shupe reached on an error to score Warren. Kohorst pitched another good game for the Knights, scattering six hits, while fanning six. He walked just one. Black was equally effective for Fort Dodge, giving up seven hits, while striking out six. Kuemper now has a couple of days off before taking on Aurelia Friday night at Aurelia. The Knight junior varsity game upped their record to 6-3 in the preliminary game, 9-4. Rick Friedman and Terry Ham men each collected two hits and two rbi's for Kuemper. Pitching Summary: IPHBB SORER Black (WP) 771622 Kohorst (LP) 7 61642 Tonight at 6:30 p.m., the Kuemper jv squad will play the Carroll Senior Little League All-Stars. The game had been originally scheduled for Wednesday night, but was moved up a day after Carroll had lined up a game with Lake yiew-AuburnWednesday. "It's all over." The speaker was Gaylord Perry and those three little words told the whole story of Monday night's heartbreaking 4-3 10-inning loss to the Oakland A's after the Cleveland Indians' right-hander came within two outs of tying the American League record of 16 consecutive pitching victories. Elsewhere, the Baltimore Orioles nipped the California Angels 6-5, the Kansas City Royals blanked the Boston Red Sox 5-0, the Minnesota Twins downed the Detroit Tigers 6-2, the Milwaukee Brewers edged the Chicago White Sox 6-5 in 12 innings and the New York Yankees trounced the Texas Rangers 12-5. "It's all over." There wasn't much else a dejected Perry could say. He blew a 3-2 lead with one out in the ninth inning when Joe Rudi tripled and Gene Tenace, who had tagged him for a two-run homer in the second inning, delivered the tying rua with a sacrifice fly. Perry allowed six hits, struck out 13 and walked only two, but one was to pinch hitter Pat Bourque, leading off the 10th. Pinch runner John "Blue Moon" Odom got around to third on a sacrifice and an infield out and designated hitter Claudell Washington, a 19-year-old rookie starting his first major league game, drilled a slider through the left side of the Cleveland infield for a single and the winning run. It was Perry's second loss and his first since opening day. Perry was trying to match the 16-win record set by Walter Johnson and Smoky Joe Wood in 1912 and equaled by Lefty Grove in 1931 and Schoolboy Rowe in 1934. Orioles 6, Angels 5 Baltimore erupted for five first-inning runs and used Wayne Garland's 4 1-3 innings of hitless relief to send the skidding Angels to their ninth consecutive defeat and eighth under Manager Dick Williams. Twins 6, Tigers 2 Eric Soderholm's two-run homer highlighted Minnesota's four-run second inning against Woodie Fryman. That was enough for Bert Blyleven, who checked the Tigers on seven hits. Brewers 6, White Sox 5 Mike Hegan's two-run pinch homer in the 12th inning off reliever Stan Bahnsen lifted the Brewers to victory. Royals 5, Red Sox 0 Steve Busby shut out slumping Boston on three hits and Tony Solaita slammed a three- run double. Yankees 12, Rangers 5 Chris Chambliss ripped a three-run double, Bobby Murcer drove in three more with a homer and an infield out and Dick Woodson pitched 5 2-3 shutout innings of relief for New York.
