Morrison New Johnson Play Announced Contest Winner A new play by Albert Johnson, professor of drama, Uni' versity of Redlands, has won first place in the North Ameri can playwrights contest spon sored by Baptist denominations of the U.S. and Canada. The play, "Except for John Leland" will be premiered in Atlantic City, New Jersey, May 24 for six Baptist Conventions. Early last year playwrights throughout North America were invited to submit new plays dealing with the subject of freedom and individual rights. Prof. Johnson chose as his central character, a liltle-knott-n American hero who played a highly significant role in the adoption of the Constitution of the United States — John Le land. A candidate for the \'irginia state assembly in 1T88, Leland championed the common peo pie who were persecuted by the state church of the time, and was a crusader for separation of church and state and for the rights of the individual. "Except for John Leland" is being produced by Jlrs. Ken neth Slassey of LambertivUe, New Jersey, with a cast chosen from the East Coast. Morrison executive director of the Los Angeles YWCA. will be the speaker next Monday during the annual meeting of the Red lands YViCA at noon in the Casa Loma Room at the Uni versity of Redlands Commons. < Luncheon reservations are due by tomorrow and may be made by calUng the YWCA. "Baby sitting" service will be available at the YW during the luncheon. Miss Morrison, an ordained minister and world traveler, has the distinction of being the first woman to perform marriage at the Presidio in San Francisco. As a minister for Ihe Evangelical Brethren church, she has held pastorates in Glcndive and Missoula, Montana. Recuperating from a serious illness in Los Angeles, where she was sent for a rest, she was brought into contact with the YWCA and decided to make the Y^VCA her career. One of the highUghts of this career came in 1948 when she was sent to Banbkok, Thailand, as a YWCA advisor ysecretary. After two years there, she returned to the United States and few months later went to Istanbul, Turkey, as director of the USO working with the United States SLvth Fleet She later became director for the entire Eastern Mediterranean area. Before assuming her present position, Jliss Morrison was metropolitan executive director of the New York City YWCA During her stay there, the famed Clark Center for Performing Arts and the Crafts Students League were estab lished. She has also been executive director of YWCA's in Missoula Montana, and Mason City, Iowa and early in her career she served in Southern California as executive director of the North Orange County Y^VCA from 1945 to 1947.
