Sports Writer BIRMINGHAM Ala Dec 3 dreams of an un challenged Southern Conference championship to climax its f'nc gridiron comeback were shattered todav broken by a relentless and resolute South Carolina eleven which rushed from behind with a list period offensive to tie the Plainsmen 20 20 Trailing by 13 points and with only two gallant goal line defenses show for its first half efforts the Gamecocks rallied in the third quarter to score once on a 60 yard drive after the kickoff had been returned 35 yards and then battered their way in short takes to two more touchdowns in the final frame to deadlock the con test Mauney Real Hero all Atperidan Captain Jimmy Hitchcock was a star and so were Phipps and DuPree but the teal hero of the thrilling bat tle was Harold Mauney a 164 pound sophomore quarterback who never gave up and finally filled hU mates with Inspiration that led them to finish on even terms with the heavily favored Plains men Mauney almost single handed sco 'd today and routed the Navy 20 to 0 with a spectacular climax to the eastern gridiron season Before the notable gathering and a sell out crowd of 79000 specta tors who found overcoats furs and blankets superfluous In 65 degree weather the Cadets put on a daz zling drive to victory after check ing the Navy's opening bid for a touchdown Gathering momentum despite the heat and the defense of the Midshipmen Army's superior speed greater power and deception combined to give the Sol diers their most decisive victory In this classic series snee 1914 Vidal Star Vidal spark plug quarter back of the Army galvanized the Cadets upon his entry Into the game late in the first period rom there on his brilliant leadership combined with the' slashing run ning of Jack Buckler combined to keep the Army in
