HOFBURG West Berkeley. ELK LAGER from John Wieland Brewing Co. C. A. THILO, Manager of Alameda County.

GENERAL OFFICE, 4ftS Eighth Strwt, Oakland. WASHINGTON Cor. Fifth and Kirkham The Best Brewed Beer in Oakland. Contracting and knows a thing or two about the Oakland captain thet would make very interesting reading. Joe informed me last evening that he believed tbat be was unjustly fined.

He made tbe play as be deemed proper, and believes be was fined for playing ball. There are a ereat many poorer players in the countrv than Cantillion. I consider him a good second baseman and so do the Oakland cranks. It has been hinted by some tbat Louis Hsrdie has been playing for bis release from the Oakland nine. 1 recommended Mr.

Hardie and ureed tbe Colonel to sign biu, and would therefore feel somewhat chagrined should it prove that he is not doing his duty. It is a fact tbat Hardie received a ftatterine offer to ko to Wash ington, and be at once went to bis manager and showed bim the telegrams, and stated "If you have any intention cf releasing me, please do so now, because 1 have the opportunity of securing another engagement." Colonel Kobinson replied to him: "Mr. Hardie, you will receive your salary iust as long as you continue to play ball for me to tbe best'of your Hardie was satisfied with this assurance that be was not among the number who is going to be releasad, and so he telegraphed Washington that he could not accept their terms, and settled down to business, hie has been playing the best ball he knows iiow and bas given satisfaction to tne Colonel. It is true that in one or two games he was not up to his speed, but he did the best he could. "I have been playing my best," said Hardie evening, "and it is not right to cbaree me with play ing for my release whenever I happen to make an error.

I will give the Oakland people the bct ball I know how to, and will play for the interest of the borne nine so long as Mr. Kobinson will allow me that pleasure. I don't want any release." Colonel Kobinson bas had a misunder standing with nearly every member in the team, and there trouble ahead. When the season opened the players clubbed to-eether and rented Mrs. Parsons' furnished house on Filbert street.

There tbev bave been living together as happy and con tented as vou please. Last month it cost each player just $20 as his share of tbe household expenses. No place in Oakland could they live any cheaper. A few days ago the Colonel called upon Mrs. Parsons in San Francisco and informed her tbat be was going to release every member in his nine, and he guessed they would have no more use for her house, and advised her to notify tbe boys that she would want her bouse when tbe month was up.

to Mrs Parsons called at tbe house and told tbe players what she bad beard, and gave them notice that they would bave to retire, bo when tbeir month wis np last Saturday they vacated the premises, and the players have been compelled to rent rooms at hotels. The boys are of the opinion that tbe Colonel arrived at the conclusion that they were too close together living in the same house, and derided toeparate them and so he caused Mrs. Parsons to tell (tiera to vacate the premises. That would appear to ba tbe only explanation of Mr. Robin-Eon's conduct.

Tbe Oakland nine is completely demoralized. The boys can't play ball under the present mismanagement, and they all have an ill-feeling against Captain O'Neill for tbe reason that they deem that they are chareed with the loss of games in many cases when the entire blame should rest upon the Captain of the nine. These I know to be facts, because I bave so been informed by the members of the nine. Of course no player in the team can come out openly agaiust the Captain, became it would cost him his position. I do not believe, however, tbat there is a single man in tbe nine who can grasp the hand of tbe Captain and call him friend.

Certain it is that Colonel Kobinson will bave to do something to win games or he had better retire from the business. The Oakland cranks are very weary of seeing tbe home club lose game after game and tbev demand tbat Kobinson take action. Tbe manager is looking for new men, but he has not yet succeeded in securing any players whose names I have heard, who would be much of an improvement on some of tbe present players. If Colonel Kobinson would manage the team as he did in years gone by there wonld not be this trouble. But he has left the details to Tip O'Neill, and so long as this player is at the helm there will always be trouble in the local nine.

Therefore I would suggest that Captain O'Neill be retired to the players' bench for a time and that the Colonel manage the nine without tbe advice of a man who sometimes punishes players out of petty pite. Those who stayed away, however, are the losers, as some of the best tennis of the whole tournament was witnessed.

In the first few games Hubbard appeared decidedly nervous, but later regained his courage, as tbe score will show. Tobin tried to play a net game, bat was forced to tbe back line and kept there by his opponent's successful lobs. After some very prolonged games Hnbbard finally won the first set, 7-5. In tbe second and third sets he easily defeated his opponent by 6-3, C-l, thus winning the first place in tbe first class. As a great many of the members of the Olympic Club look upon tennis as a lady's game, a match will probably be arranged for these members' benefit between Hubbard and Joe ly.

keeper of the California courts, a which time they will be shown tennis as it is scientifically plaved. The doubles championship tournament of Alameda county will be held at the Lakeside grounds next fcatcrday. games commencing at 9: 3 a. m. and continuing all day.

Some of the best teams in tbe county will contest, and very good tennis should be seen. The club nas issued no formal invitations as they d'd lart year, but all enthusiasts of the game are invited to be present. Bates and Neal of the East Oakland Club will play together, and should be one of the strongest teams. Hubbard and Haigbt, and also R. Hoffman and Carr Neil are very good teams.

The full list of entries and tbe drawing will be published Friday, entries closing the night previous. There are several tennis men who think Bates can beat Hubbard in another year, and also tbat Sam Neil, that promising young player of tbe East Oakland Club, will in, say two years, beat either. Nearly every week Mark Requa of Piedmont has his friends out at his residence to play tennis. The court is of asnhaltum, and probably as eood as any in the city. Extra work is being done to tbe Lakeside courts to bave them in perfect condition for Saturday.

Tobin and Magee will not enter the doubles on Saturday, a at first stated. Tobin will probably appear in tbe Olympic Club games. The interest among the ladies of the Lakeside is increasing constantly, and probably there are one or two who will enter the annual ladies' tournament next September at San Rafael. Some of those who belong are Miss Gertrude Buy ley. Miss Alice Flint, Miss Handy, Miss Haieht, Miss Goodall, Miss Whitney, Miss Coffin, Miss Stephanie Whiiney, Miss Minnie Bayley, Miss Watt, Miss Hirvey and others.

At the Keliance Athletic Club the athletes are devotion their attention to playing handball. The boys appear to enjoy the game very much, and in fact some of them have indulged in it so much that they have been temporarily crippled.

The Directors are commencing to make arrangements for their gentleman's night. T. F. We have some of the bet athletes in Oakland, who will be entered in the various amateur contests.

Next Saturday, at the meeting of tbe Pacific Coast Amateur Athletic Association, we will have two men entered, Sullivan and Dowdle. Then we are getting ready for a run to Bolinas Kidge in the near future. Coloael Robioion I Amioul Awaiting tna Coming of Bli Maw Players. There was a little scene on Broadway Monday night between tbe Colonel and Pitcher Mars. The latter was to receive his salary, and when he met Kobinson, said: "Well, I guess we had better settle tip. If I owe you any money take it out of my salary and give me ray release." "But I'm not going to release you," replied th6 Colonel. "You pitcbed good enough ball for me at San Jose.

I propose to play you on tbe bench for awhile without "Hot much," said Mars. "You can't take the bread out of my mouth when 1 mm willing and ready towork and I will Bet submit to any such treatment." he Colonel walked up to tbe telegraph office and wis followed by Mars. The Colonel sent a telegram and so did Mars. "See here." enid the pitcher, "I know a thing or two about baseball rules and in three day I'll be beyond the Rockies." The Colonel raid never a word. It is sttied that Youngman, the first baseman of tue home club, is one of the tnoat sensi live men in the baseball business.

He squirms under newspaper criticisms and shake? horror whenever he hears oftbo Colonel going ta release players. When Youngman was signed by A. W. Haven. the Oolone 's special Eastern emissary, Captain Keill, he objected to coming to tana city noon the ground that he feared that after he was 3000 miles from home he blight be released without just cause.

The Colonel assured him tbat such would not be the ease, and promised to give him a fair trial, and so he was advanced his fare and expenses and came to this city. After few games Youogman proved a failure at second base, and so ha was sent to the first bag, where bas been doing better work. But Mr. Youngman will not be released, because he bas been given a premise, and this is a little inside nistory as to the reason why Robinson clings so 1 steadfast to hie first baseman. He proposes to keep his promise.

For some days the Colonel has been sharpening his steel to give Jot Cantillion a stick or two. The opportunity arrived Bandar, when Joe was fined $5 for not playing ball In a proper manner. He held a fielded bail while a runner went to his base. "Make it 25, why don't yon," retorted Cantillion, and he was obliged, for the Colonel raised the fine to amount. It would therefore 'appear that Joe is boeked to go when some of the new players arrive in this city, He was at one time the Colonel's favorite player aad the com pan-ton of Tip O'SeflL Bat thing have changed this season, and Cantillion is not toe aaaoe Jovial Joe of last year's nine.
