THE SUNDAY DISPATCH AND ARGUS March 26 1989 B7 Participation Opinion Will there ever be another commissioner like Rozelle? Jim Meenan The end of the nearly 30-year reign of NFL commissioner Pete Rozelle probably marks the end of more than just the Rozelle Era It might well mark the end of a period of time when a commissioner could be a solid decisive leader Between con- court litiga- player unions Hand powerful own- Jere the commis-I of any sport his hands tied these map Hstant Mi tion Sports Editor View 2sioner jgflfinds iSpquite econa place to irrowneaa Kanch team The Arrowhead Ranch Older Division team took sec- Casey Martins and Chris Farrell and in the back row: ond place in the recent IIAA state volleyball tourna- Jeff Conover Brenn Paulsen Joe Hall Eli Shetler and ment and also won the Sportsmanship Award Mem- John Heater Missing from the picture are Trevoy bers of the team pictured are front from left: Tony Woods Kyle Doyle Mitch McKay Dan Walters and Shaw Joe Bickwermert (tourney MVP) Darrion Dixon coaches Dave McNichols and Lee Fichman What a season! When looking at the success of local basketball teams this past season a look through the history books puts it in even a brighter light In fact we even have to open the books Never before has the Quad-Cities had a team get second in Class A boys (Alleman) fourth in Class AA boys (Rock Island) and fourth in Class AA girls (Moline) in basketball in the same season And the fact that Davenport North took second in Iowa boys play adds even more luster Like many of you I can remember to 20 years ago admittedly there girls athletics at the time in Illinois And teams like Alleman in Class A which begin as a class until 1972 But to have had even one team enjoy state-wide success was quite an accomplishment This year we had three in Illinois one in Iowa We also had three players Brian Wolf Michele Rogiere and Jay Reed make All-State teams Again to have just one make it was quite an accomplishment for the area years ago And you forget the success of the St Ambrose women third in the nation in NAIA and the St Ambrose men who made it to the national tourney What can we say? been quite a winter sports season Hats off to all a lot more than his before all is said and done about this most misunderstood drug One should remember that a few years ago there were just questions surrounding the drug Now there are answers and those that allowed experimentation are not viewed in a favorable light Considering it was strictly a performance-enhancing drug all along though does make the use of it wrong in the eyes of this column Rozelle might have wanted to do more but felt his hands were tied After all he made the right decision considering the Oakland move to Los Angeles but saw it overturned in the courts But even Raiders owner A1 Davis knows things have not worked out for his team in LA At any rate Rozelle did a pretty solid job and replacing him will prove to be quite difficult The truth of the matter is that until the owners and players pick the commissioner together there will never be even a chance for a commissioner to be as effective as Rozelle once was He was smart in getting out every mu to provide decisive leadership seems to finds its way to court so much so that commissioners quit making decisions until about 15 lawyers have gone over the potential repercussions of whatever they might decide The end result is the stress that had a lot to do with stepping down Simply put a million-dol-iar-a-year salary or not being a commissioner is no longer fun History will show Rozelle to be a great commissioner his first 20 years or so on the job considering the growth the NFL experienced the successful merger with the AFL and the riches the players and owners reaped all the while entertaining fans But history may also have some question marks over the last 10 years The leniency on steroids may come back to haunt the Rozelle resume but it might haunt Arrowhead youth win two titles Jamie Allison looks for more big numbers from left: Damon a co-op team in the Florida State League called the Miami Marlins and they are looking for 12 players from our organization I know I would get my 500 at bats there and a chance to keep putting numbers on the board But all going to do now is keep working hard and see what No matter what the season brings the talented Allison will be taking the game in stride have no worries I just want to do my he added playing for a manager in Ken Bolek who expects hard work every second on the field and I love that not going to get too up or too down just to work hard and have The talent is there The numbers should continue to follow Allison By John Marx Staff sports writer Baseball numbers is what he has one his mind Big ones as big as you can put on the board the attitude former Rock Island star Jamie Allison carries with him heading into his third season as a member of the Cleveland Indians organization After a tough go of it during his initial pro campaign in 1987 Allison had to settle for baseball obscurity last season a co-op team consisting of players from the California Angels and Cleveland organizations at Reno Nev my slow start I felt the Indians looked at me as a non-prospect in spring training last said Allison from the minor-league complex in Tucson Ariz Thursday I accepted going to the co-op and put some numbers on the board I made the California League All-Star team and had what most thought was a pretty good By the numbers it was a very solid year for the fleet-footed outfielder who possesses a big-league throwing arm and excellent speed He batted 270 stole 30 bases drove in over 50 runs and was sterling in the field Allison proved to doubters he belonged Apparently someone noticed last effort because the former Indiana State University standoutl earned a promo- tion to the Kinston SC squad the highest Class A team got to camp and they told me they looked at me as a prospect said Allison they want me to do is relax and have another good year They keep telling me to keep putting numbers on the board and things will work Allison is prepared to play the numbers game have to have the best year of my life and really get people in the organization to keep looking at he said more determined than ever to have a big Though promoted Allison is part of a four-man outfield rotation with the Kinston club and another season of 500 at bats is in jeopardy If the possibility of sitting out every fourth game becomes a reality he would gladly welcome a move have to play to keep them interested in he added if I get caught up in a rotation-type situation I would accept a move NOBODY SCATS MIDAS FOR GUARANTEE Cambridge 7th graders LT champs Carlson back from left Coach Terry Lee Chad Erickson Lance Edmund Ben Pearson Reese Berry Dean Caras Manager Troy Swanson
