store to see what had happened Meeting Jones coming down the street she asked him if there were some shooting going on and he replied: and an old grudge of 20 Mrs Footer knew Jones who had often out through the chest and )i( died in a pool of blood as he fell out face downward into the street at the corner of High and Main streets The senior Mr Blazo fell back Into his shop with wounds in the arm chest and abdomen and from the beginning it was known that there was no chance for hU life He died about 5 o'clock at the hospital and Dc Stanhope who also had been taken to the hospital died at 6:25 Dr Stanhope was shot in the lung neck and kidney and lived only a few hours Raymond Blazo was shot twice in the chest and died almost instantly INVESTIGATIONS COMPLETED Investigations of the shootings were completed by Sheriff Little-field Chief Pendleton and County Attorney Charles Taylor and the medical examiners were Dr Vickery and Dr Franz Leyonborg of Belfast Attorney General Clyde Chapman who was in Augusta arrived home late in the afternoon after having assigned Frank Cooper to represent his office in the investigations WELL KNOWN CITIZENS All the victims were well known residents of Belfast and in every home on every corner and wherever two or more people congregated last night the only topic of conversation First Victim HERBERT ELLIS Prominent Belfast business man slain on street corner by maniac was the terrible affair that had be-fallen the city Herbert Ellis was born in East Belfast son of Mr and Mrs Wood Ellis He Is survived by his wife formerly Florence Turner and a brother Fred Ellis formerly Chief of Police here He taught school for many years and was at one time superintendent In Chelmsford Mass Later he entered the real estate business and then came back to Belfast where he has been for many years one of the city's most highly respected citizens He has been in the insurance business and is a former president of the Rotary Club and high in Masonic circles here William Blazo is survived by his wife formerly Nellie McKeen of Belfast and a son Harry Blazo of Porter a son by former marriage I PORTLAND AP Former Representative Donald volunteers working under the direction of Sheriff Roscoe Littlefield surrounded the blacksmith shop and prepared to smoke out the killer State police were sent to the scene of the shooting from Bangor and preparations were made to have a supply of tear gas bombs sent over from the state police headquarters in Augusta Percy Boardman one of the men surrounding the building fired once into the shop as he thought the man walked by a window A few minutes later Jerry Blair unarmed went In through a window in the rear of the shop and signalled to the officers that Jones was dead The kiUer was dragged out from -in the rear of a forge in the shop and died within a few minutes on the ground outside the building He had shot himself through the temple with one of the revolvers ne carried A WALKING ARSENAL Jones wore an overcoat but as he had done this all summer no unusual attention was drawn towards him on this account In each pocket of the coat he carried a revolver Over his shoulder he carried the shotgun and in a case he had a rifle The rifle was a Winchester -38 and the revolvers were automatics After killing Ellis with a charge from the shotgun' he walked down the street to the Blazo place Here before completing the terrible slaughter he took the rifle from its case loaded It but fired the shotgun The case for the rifle was later found near the scene The killer has always had guns according to Belfast people and was a regular purchaser of books on iire-arms The aged landlady where he lived thought nothing of his leaving the house armed and it is reported that he hardly ever fent out at night without first arming himself with one of the many weapons in his possession The amunition found on him would have filled a good size basket BOTTLE OF POISON ON HIM Search of the clothing worn by Jones resulted in the finding of a bottle of liquid believed to be poison (Chief Pendleton stated that during were buzzing with activity well into the night -as the outside world was grudges he had against certain people in the community His fancied grudge against Ellis is supposed to have gone back many years to a time when they lived near each other and his taking of a shot at Chiles Smith who works for the Blazo Company indicated that he intended to extinguish this whole organization PROMINENT MEN WERE THE Investigations made following the shooting disclosed that among the prominent men Jones had signalled out for extinction were Attorney General Clyde Chapman Sheriff Littlefield Frank Cooper former sheriff and Buzzell former state senator and well known attorney Jones has continually talked of getting these men some day and it was the consensus of opinion in Belfast yesterday that ail were mighty lucky not to have shown up about the time that the mad man was on the
