BY BILL TROTTER BDN STAFF BAR HARBOR Darron Collins says he can remember the excitement and nervousness he felt in the fall of 1988 when he first arrived in Bar Harbor from New Jersey to start his freshman year at College of the Atlantic Collins now 41 is excited again about the new Mike Nussbaum (left) of Brunswick and Griffin Bannon 8 also of Brunswick pick potatoes Monday during the annual spuds harvest at Crystal Spring Farm in Brunswick academic year getting under way at COA but this time his experience will be slightly different from 23 years ago Collins who is seven weeks into his tenure as the new president of the school is the first graduate to hold the post and the first president to have been born after COA was founded in 1969 Seated in his office in the school's Turrets ad Km Darron Collins ministration building Collins said Monday that he plans to tell the COA community about some of his experiences as a student when he speaks Wednesday afternoon at COA's convocation the ceremony the school holds each September to officially kick off the new academic year One thing he doesn't plan to do however is lay out a vision for the school mainly because he has not developed one Collins said that despite his familiarity with the school as an alumnus his initial task as president will be to visit with the school's faculty and students and to learn from See Collins Page B4 Sarah Jacobs of Freeport sets no limits Even when that means there is none for anyone else "The peas never make it home" said Jacobs of her 4-and 6-year-old boys "They'll just sit in the back seat and eat broccoli I say if it's from the farm bag they can have all they want" Jacobs is one of 277 shareholders in Crystal Spring Farm of Brunswick's community-supported agriculture project which for $515 upfront provides everyone with weekly loads of produce from June through October She and a few dozen others turned out Monday for a Labor Day tradition at Crystal Spring of harvesting some 6 or 7 tons of potatoes Fouled by soil and sweat but leavened with the task of handling their sustenance from the ground to their tables the volunteers saw the harvest as a social gathering where the theme was healthy living For the many children present there was another theme: head-to-toe dirt For 8-year-old Griffin Bannon son of Crystal Spring Farm operators Seth Kroeck and Maura Bannon it was just another day on the farm though he said harvesting potatoes is easier than some of the farm's other crops "The cucumbers are probably the hardest" he said "It's hard to pull them off the vine and they have lots of spikes" Crystal Spring Farm is owned by the Brunswick-Topsham Land Trust which has leased it to Kroeck and Bannon since 2004 Kroeck said he farms 11 acres of vegetables and 60 acres in pastures and hay Five varieties of potatoes tomatoes peppers arugula cabbage lettuce eggplant sweet potatoes watermelon strawberries herbs carrots beets winter squash leeks and onions are some of the 50 or so See Brunswick Page B4 Former resident has court date in threatening case BY JUDY HARRISON BDN STAFF PORTLAND The woman who caused an 8-hour standoff at her Fayette home in 2005 is scheduled to appear Tuesday in US District Court charged with threatening federal and state employees Charlotte Bea Palm 50 of Cape Coral Fla is charged with interstate threatening communication and obscene or harassing telephone calls in May She was arrested July 22 in Florida according to court documents filed in federal court in Portland Palm has been held without bail since then and was returned to Maine last week by the US Marshal Service Palm's recent arrest is linked to an incident on July 26 2005 when members of the Fayette Fire Department responded to a medical call concerning Palm's mother minor at the University of Maine He started work on the movie eight years ago "I have not come up with a title yet" he said His movie depicts the epic journey of the character "Slim" whom he portrays in the film Road from Hillside Drive Borodko lives on Hillside Drive with his family but was by himself at the time he Was hit by the SUV the deputy said Monday afternoon Sargent said it is not clear why the boy ran out into the roadway Smith was the person who contacted police to report the accident the deputy said He said he does not expect any charges to be filed in the incident Smith was wearing a seat belt when his vehicle hit the boy he said Sargent said he had spoken to the boy's family and that despite the severity of the injuries it seems the boy will survive "It doesn't sound Monday when the 18 extras who gave up several hours of their holiday afternoon to appear in his untitled film had trudged into the trees Arell 21 of Bangor redirected the group to stand atop the rise has been hospitalized with injuries to his head and other parts of his body after being struck by a sport utility vehicle Sunday afternoon on Upper Dedham Road according to police The boy Nicholas Borodko ran out into the road around 4:30 in front of a black 2004 Ford Explorer driven by Frederick Smith 55 of Dedham Hancock County Sheriff's Deputy Chris Sargent indicated in a report on the incident The boy was bit and suffered a large laceration to his head swelling of the brain and lungs a minor fracture of a bone in his back and swelling of his knees and elbows Sargent wrote in the report Borodko was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor A hospital spokesman said Monday that they had no information on the boy According to Sargent the boy ran out into Upper Dedham iV started making movies The Bangor High School graduate is now a University of Maine senior majoring in music education and minoring in film He has been working on this project for nearly eight years mostly during summer vacations The crowd scenes shot Labor Day are about all he needs to complete the picture he said Arell described the untitled film as an "epic road show See Movie Page B4 and musicals but never in a movie" Miriam Rogan said Tony Gallo 40 Mimi Dennis 44 and their 21 monthold daughter Mitzn Gallo all of Bangor also participated in the filming session "We are movie fans" Dennis said "So when we read that someone locally was trying to get something like this going we wanted to show up and support them" Arell was 7 years old when he seconds on-screen but the men women and children who answered a Bangor Daily News calendar listing calling for film extras happily agreed to forgo payment for film credit DeAnne Rogan 52 and her 17-year-old daughter Miriam Rogan both of Houlton had planned to head home Sunday from Bangor but stayed one more day to be extras Neither had performed in a film before "I've been in a lot of plays.
