deer season The opening weekend of the split-season last Friday through Sunday lured hunters to the field -under near-perfect conditions an the hunters knew how to take an advantage of the opportunity Every county in this area posted increased kills over last year which until now stood as the best since deer hunting was established in the state 27 years ago MERCER COUNTY had the biggest increase followed by Rock Island and Whiteside counties Mercer hunters felled 305 deer 55 more than last season Rock Island hike was 43 while Whiteside had 37 more than were nailed in the first half of the 1982 season Forrest Loomis who manages the Department of game program from his office in Monmouth said the three-day unofficial total kill of 19500 practically assured a record total for the entire six-day season a year ago was he said with 19500 over the first three days getting awfully Loomis said the pattern across the state showed approximately a 15 percent increase in all areas were higher than that but it was a rare occasion when a harvest fell below 1982 he said CONDITIONS were ideal Bucks were late coming into rut so there wasn't a big kill by bow arrow hunters preceding the first half of the split shotgun season And the weather was The bucks were as big as they were plentiful The biggest buck dropped over the weekend was a 306-pounder felled in Knox County But Rock Island County had its share of big bucks Two that weighed in the vicinity of 275 pounds were taken last week one by a bow arrow hunter (Fred Seynaeve of Milan) and one by Rock Islander Arvid Johnson on the second day of the shotgun season Both went to about 220 pounds field dressed and by the method of determining the live weight after the fact Loomis said they almost certainly weighed 275 pounds PERHAPS THE prize deer dropped last week was the 15-point 195-pounder felled by bow arrow hunter Dave Peterson of Fyre Lake After the 60-day drying out period for the rack Peterson plans to submit it for a possible Boone Crocket award The Illinois City and Andalusia areas appeared to be the hottest spots in Rock Island County with big herds seen by many hunters a rundown on area counties with the 1983 kill figures listed first and those from 1982 following in parenthesis Rock Island 226 (193) Mercer 305 (245) Marycrest moves to 9-0 Smith with 14 and Parnell Robinson with a dozen In action the Francis College at the Marycrest gym last night making it nine straight for the season with an 85-63 romp over the visitors Tony Watkins led a balanced Marycrest attack with 19 points followed by Eiland with 17 Daryl IF LOOKING for the pheasant hotspots in Iowa the state's conservation commission has some advice for you: keep looking a two-fold said Richard Bishop of the upland game management office had an early crop harvest which put the birds in limited cover and made then accessible to the hunter but the successesor failures experienced by the hunters were on almost a fartn-to-farm basis East Central Iowa populations are down In other areas where there was good nesting cover hunters have reported great success IT boils down to is what farm you happen to be hunting on a particular day had teams out across the state through the first couple of weeks of the season and nowhere did we find a consistent thread either of success or failure talk to one party who limited out by 10 am and talk to another a mile away who hunted all day and took home one bird thought we'd have a high harvest the first two weekends but the weather knocked the success rate down some So we expect to see fairly good hunting through BISHOP SAID his advice to hunters is to return to familiar areas farms where experienced successful hunting in the past you just go there and expect to limit out not this he said for areas where there is good cover next to crop fields Hunters vho find those spots are finding birds And if the farmer had good alfalfa last summer or wide waterways with grass for nesting you should have a successful Bees suffer 93-73 defeat Wisconsin-Platteville had too much firepower for St Ambrose last night moving ahead to stay midway through the opening period en route
