UF 6 THE BOSSIER PRFSV TIU KM Gl ID 1ST8 Gov Edwards tries swamp bass fishing that beautiful water where the hot summer sun couldn't touch lit was about 20 degrees cooler there than where we had been fishing' I told the governor that some people actually wanted to cut a lot of these trees to "improve" the fishing and to make open areas for waterskiing racing areas etc About that time a big 3 pound swamp bass clob- bered my old pawpaw as it came down through two big cypress trees almost as if the bass of Saline themselves were trying to show the governor what those trees mean to them All he said was just say this Nate none will be cut for 2 more years at for this and future generations In a little over two hours we had 24 bass in our two boxes despite bright sunshine in the hottest part of the day Notwithstanding the obvious reluctance of Carl and Taylor land me too i the governor suggested that I go show him ChiChi dam and some of the problems caused by it My appreciation of his interest made me quickly forget the good fishing enjoyable as it had been So I took him to the dam the big moss beds and the choked up banks caused by the wide spillway and then I took him to the big breaks where I insisted that we fish for a few minutes so that he could the soul of Saline As we eased through them about our three good bass in the box when with a gnn even bigger than the had been Carl pulled out one by one six good bass from their box! Fishing on down through ChiChi Bay arm of Saline parallel to Carl and Taylor proved to be good sport as all four of us enjoyed some fine action One time as I took a solid 2-pounder from my ancient hooks Gov Edwards caught one and Taylor outwrestled and landed a solid 34-pounder in their boat Did you ever try to make pictures in two different directions at once with a 2-pound bass in one hand? Yes good action to show the governor why our swamp lakes should be preserved no Wham the bass literally exploded onto it and right then and there in that hole our governor began his education as to why swamp bass fishing is different! He finally landed the Impounder and on his very next castfin the same hole caught another slightly smaller With a big gnn he said "Now let's go over and show Bacon and Stewart that we too can catch em and then go on and find Taylor and Carl Though 1 hated to leave an area that was producing like that one 3 good bass in the box in 13 minutes (I had caught one on a spinner) I too was worried that Carl and Taylor would be waiting for us to arrive according to our original plan Sure enough as we rounded Oak Point there they were fishing along in the holes in the thick moss there We were really enjoying telling check on the fishing so 1 turned off to chat with them They had caught three good bass in the last 10 minutes they said and when Dave pulled out a flouncing 3-pound bass nght in front of us my plan was revised then and there Over about 100 yards past Dave and Ben is a break of big cypress trees which I knew contained some pretty holes in the moss so 1 headed that way On the way I handed the governor one of my Sabra outfits with a perch colored tormag on it so that he could get adjusted to it while I paddled over In four casts he had it down solid even fishing lefthanded as I suggested By the time he had made his eighth cast 1 had worked the boat to within 20 yards of the prettiest hole around that break and his cast into it was perfect One small jerk nothing Another jerk nothing Still another jerk Shake hands with Gov taw in Edwards Pad he has cared enough to come up to see for himself what concerns us sportsmen around here so much "You're sure welcome tv re Governor" Dad said and I hope you can better understand our problems here on Saline and can help us And that you can enjoy some of our good fishing too What time shall I tell mother to put the biscuits in the I need to be back in Baton Rouge by 10 or 10:30 so we had better be in by 8 and be gone by 9 Mr Durham I like to eat and run but we have to this he answered Since it was almost 3:30 already and we were still at our landing I felt almost shocked by the realization that we would have to quit fishing by 7:30 at least njgjt about the time the bass go on their usual late evening binge Talk about messing game plan The one thirst which I depended on most was suddenly at the last minute taken away inwocably Most of you knoyv what I mean I might frustrate or even irritate Edwin Edwards Louisiana's No 1 sportsman I FILM OILSSi-OUT!
