Statistics The statistics most recently have claimed that the annual CPI rose 147 percent for the year through March1 The food and beverage component was' up 74 percent housing was up 17 percent transportation was up 23 percent apparel and upkeep were up 71 percent medical care rose 112 percent entertainment was up 85 percent and the was up 84 per-cent' Using canceled checks charge and cash receipts and other records determine how much you spent in those 12 months on each of the CPI categories and total those expenditures Merrill Lynch then advises sumers to each category by dividing the total spent in that area by the total expenditure figure For example if you spent $3000 on food and Dow gain is 2-month best Welcome to Brewer The consumer price index referred to as the CPI is a faulty indicator of -overall increases and decreases in the cost of living according to Merrill Lynch Pierce Fedner and Smith Inc The damage done to the pocketbook may be less than one think? especially as the price of food clothing energy and other items climb month after month according to the investment counselors Merrill Lynch said that the CIP is pot determined by what the consumer actually buys The most commonly all-urban CPI only attempts to measure spending patterns of the average urgan consumer and certain assumptions on which it is based are considered out of date Merrill Lynch said the CPI is calculated by comparing prices of alihost 400 goods and services with prices the month before and the year before but the index that consumers purchase the same items each month as they did in the early 1970s before the days of energy shortages and doubledigit inflation The CPI also assumes Merrill Lynch said that consumers spend the same proportion of income on those goods and services as they did in the latter part of the last decade Consumer buying is not static and when the price of beef is high for example Merrill Lynch said consumers witch to chicken or other cheaper protein sources And as energy costs have risen many consumers have switched to more fuel-efficeint cars better weatherized their homes and otherwise become energy-conscious Merrill Lynch said the CPI ignores the fact that consumers adjust spending patterns to cope with economic realities and it therefore can overstate the actual rate of inflation The CPI is an index of consumption and does not count what is spent on income taxes social security taxes ret-prement plans life insurance and savings and these omissions Merrill Lynch said can further distort the general rate of inflation Economists say the CPI assumes that consumers refinance their homes every month when in reality the average home changes hands every seven or eight years and most mortgage payments remain the same over long periods of time so when mortgage rates and housing prices rise as they did in the past year the CPI exag- ferates inflation for most people the lerrill Lynch release said Merrill Lynch said
